This is my favorite bonsai tree - I'm going to a nursery this weekend to find a Coast or Dawn Redwood. Love your channel - you should put some info about yourself in the About section!
@lakeelsinorebonsai12033 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Johnny! The coast redwoods are really an easy tree to care, just chop it off and leave some nice branches and it will develop nicely through the years. I actually have mine for a few years. With the Dawn, I never have a good luck with it. I already killed 3 of them. Maybe the hot weather in summer here in my area. Wait a minute, are you the actor guy? “Jackass the movies”? I really like them, I think it’s really funny.

I have it for almost 4 years, got it from Lowe’s Garden nursery as garden tree maybe 10 years or more., chopped it off down to 12-13 inches with some small little branches and grow them all. The trunk hasn’t change size. So my advice if you will pick up this kind of tree, you might as well get a larger one already, so you just gonna grow branches.

Beautiful tree sir! One question, how much of the root ball do you usually trim off and how often? Planning on creating my own Bonsai of this type.
@lakeelsinorebonsai12033 жыл бұрын
Hello, when you start a redwood to make a bonsai, you can trim the roots just about the pot you will goin to put it in. Just leave an inch around it from the pot for the new soil. I am always on the safe side. Some like to bare root. I don’t usually do that. Only sometimes. After 2-3 years, and the tree is established, then you can root prune and bare root to have a nice root ramification.

Subscribed to your channel. I have a very large giant sequoia I started about 11-12 years ago from sapling I purchased in Leggett CA at the drive thru tree. I have many questions about topping it and giving a false top using the top branches to disguise the hard cut. I’m wondering if you have a website or email you wouldn’t mind discussing through? The tree is about 9 feet tall and is in a whiskey barrel currently. Wish I could share a photo.
@lakeelsinorebonsai12032 жыл бұрын
Hello. Thanks for subscribing! I haven’t made a video in a while especially updating this tree. It’s been doing good and developing well and I’m very happy. I’m sorry, I’m not a social media guy, just have this KZbin, and only for my trees. If you are happy with the trunk of your tree, you can cut it up to 12 inches or a bit more. And wait for the growth. And you can build a top from there. Or it’s either the cut in the top you’ll curve it to be like the tree broke from the top and the new branches you’ll wire them going downwards. So it will look like a very old tree. My tree was about 8-9 feet as well when I found it. If you like to discuss further more, try my email at melllave92532@gmail.com and I’ll try to help you whenever I’m free. Regards Mel

Why do you need to prune it? I like it better with many branches.
@lakeelsinorebonsai12033 жыл бұрын
Hello Sylvia, you have to prune it to grow more branches and to shape it to a nicer ramification. If you don’t prune, some branches will grow so bigger than the other with out proportions

Great video. I just picked up some nice costal redwoods about the size of the trees in the video and am super excited. Do you happen to know how often the tree's need to be watered? I have my tree outside on my patio getting sun from afternoon to sunset. Watering every other day but started getting brown tips on the leaf's but also lots of bud's sprouting from the trunk.

How do you decide what shape or what to trim?
@lakeelsinorebonsai12033 жыл бұрын
Hello Martin, when the tree is ready to shape, I just look at the branches that are not appropriate. The lower branches should be larger than the upper branches. It should have lower branch, and upper branches and the Apex (crown) and then develop ramifications on those branches. I just hope that all of the trees have perfect structures but the reality is especially nursery stock trees like my trees have most of the time have the wrong growth. So I just try and eyeball it and cut some branches that are growing in the wrong places. The new long shoots that are lanky, you can cut It anytime. There are a lot of videos by the pros teaching how to detail pruning to shape bonsai trees. I got most of the techniques from them and try to do the best I can with my trees. Any more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me. I’m happy to help. Stay safe!

Hi Rick, I got the tree almost 3 years ago from Lowe’s and cut the trunk in the parking lot that day. Left some small branches on top wired it and made it the new apex.
