Yes my city is way more then just cheese and stroopwafels :P I am born here, lived here all my life. Proud to be Gouwenaar. Even if I do not like Cheese. Though I love Stroopwafels.

I did see your question about the Turfmarkt quay on Insta. As a born and raised "Goudse Kaaskop" i can tell you why the "Heigt" of de turfmarkt quay is so low. Turfmarkt translated is Peatmarket In the early days all poor inhabitants of gouda used "Turf" aka peat as fuel to heat their houses in stead os coal, becouse the coal was more expensive than peat. The peat was delivered in ships that anchoraged in the turfmarkt, and the Peat was dischargesd with man power and wheelbarrows from the ships. To make it quick and easy they used ships with a low waterline to the boarding to deliver, and the quay was also low so the discharge was easyer. And that is also the reason gouda has Locks in their canals To pervent to overflow the city, as like other old dutch city's with canals. e.g. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dordrercht, Delft and Leiden.

My place of birth ❤ Nearly 50 years later I'm still living in a place right next to it. I don't go to the old part as often as I used to and I'm pretty surprised how many shops changed since I last was there. Edit: OMG, the museum changed so so much! But ok....it's been at least 30 years since I last visited it. Edit 2: You were sooooo robbed at that cheese parlor! €77 per KG is just insane. Tourist trap warning! Edit 3: That narrow street is right next to my old school. The handlebars of my cita hardly fit.

Funny thing is, Gouda never produced any cheese… they had the exclusive rights to sell cheese so all the local farmers were only allowed to sell the cheese via Gouda., hence Gouda cheese.

A loop around town - if you did that on foot then "loop" (pronounced loap) would have been appropriate as it derives from "lopen" (to walk), however the noun is generally used for "running" rather than walking.

If you strawl in quaint little historic towns (many of them)) you can appreciate the fact that visiters of the 16hundreds were in awe when visited Amsterdam. At that time, now still mostly intact, Amsterdam was the biggest city in Europe. The old town still is the biggest 17th century centre in the world.

The age of these towns, and how much remains in good condition is pretty great!

nice that you came to visit Gouda and enjoyed the weather (LOL) It's just a shame that you visited the wrong stroopwafel bakery okay Kamphuisen is tasty but Markus's stroopwafels are 10 times better, maybe come again in the summer and try the real stroopwafel

If you buy Gouda cheese, it should be freshly cut from the big wheel, not pre-packaged in plastic.

Totally understand… didn’t see that while we were there.

8:45 Note that the "narrow house" is in a bend/curve/angle of the street. At one point in time in the NL, property tax related to the length of the facade of you house along the street. You used more shared/public infrastructure with a long facade and hence had to pay more. This got outsmarted in cases like this, I guess, where the house fills a large space in the angle between the sections of the street on either side of the angle pint. Behind the "short" facade. That said, I am aware of a house based on this reasoning in Amsterdam, here it may just be a narrow house. It could have been built by (i.e. for) an English narrow-boat skipper who otherwise would not feel at home.

There are also a lot of houses along that street where Katrina is talking about this, where the doors go to different flats, i.e. one door goes straight into the ground floor premises whereas the door beside it opens to a staircase going to premises on floors above. So the actual residences in the building are at least as wide as both doorways at the front at ground level.

Gouda cheese does not necessarily come from Gouda. It is marketed in Gouda. At least that was the case in historical times.
@Dutchbelg316 күн бұрын
Actually It got its name from the cheese market but the cheese is produced in the area around Gouda - Bodegraven and basically anywhere in the Groene Hart regio. Just so many meadows with so many cows and farms :-)

With your brilliant music choice "under" your videos, talking about "stroopwafels" and how amazing, or not, they are, it's opportune to be aware of these senior bandits: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Stroopwafels Not "our" - yours, mine - first choice, but still. If you frequent the food of "the commons" and occasionally rave about that, it's appropriate. Puns intended.
