Visiting a new clamming beach for the first time can be difficult. However, if you pay attention to the disturbances in the sand, you can easily identify where cockle are located. They are super easy to find and dig, no special tools necessary. All you really need is a keen eye and practice, go out there good luck!

Cockles are epic Dungeness crab bait. I used them for the first time in 2010 on the opener and none of the competing pots near mine did well. Let it soak all day while the neighbor checked a pot about 30 feet from mine every hour or so. Watched him through binoculars and he didn't get a single one, so I warned my son to not expect much. Wrong. Our pot and the one I dropped nearby were literally packed, like no more would fit. 50 or so with some 8-inchers.

I've been on a clamming binge. You got some nice clams up there! Much different than the SF bay area. Would love to find some littlenecks some day as well. Subbed!

Really cool watching you. I grew up in California. Unfortunately after two tours in Vietnam I and my wife never returned to live. We would however visit family. Anyway how do you prepare those. I LOVE clams so is the flavor similar? AWESOME show, thank you very much.

Fresh cockle clams have a sweet flavor to them if prepared right and is one of my favorites to eat! I like to throw them on the grill or add them in a clam chowder.

What kind of beaches will give you a tell that they have cockles?
@fishingwithyeng5886
@fishingwithyeng5886 3 жыл бұрын
Search for protected beaches with medium to little slope. A soft beach is ideal, but not always an indicator. A better indicator to go by is shell combing. If you find cockle shells, chances are, there's a good clam bed somewhere near by. I recommend walking bare foot for your first time, most often times they are in so shallow you can feel them when you step on one. Other than that I recommend watch out for the siphon and the mounts they make whenever it's low tide

Loved the video. I'm trying to identify some cockle spots down here in Sonoma county. Weird question, but where did you get those hip boots? I hate waders and have a hard time finding any that fit. Those boots look perfect for kneeling on sand and mud flats!

Thank you! And I got those hip waders from sportsman's warehouse for $80. They are pretty nifty, pretty light so they beat carrying around full-sized waders but still protect your knees from getting muddy.

When is harvesting season for both
@fishingwithyeng5886
@fishingwithyeng5886 3 жыл бұрын
For most of California there is no season for cockle clams or gapers. Although you should always call the biotoxin hotline to make sure that the clams are safe to harvest. Visit the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website to read up on the regulations for your area before you head out. Good luck out there!
