Who has not seen it before? - a diver pulls a spool ot of the pocket and it falls creating a mess of line.

Hi Achim, I feed the line through a hole and wrap it around the doubleender even with dry gloves. The trick is to have a small alpine butterfly loop just behind the knot for creating the lead loop. To pull the line out through the hole with dry gloves, you simply pull on the butterfly loop. It works in the same way your small loop in the front of the leader works with dry gloves.

Another great video from Achim, not showing the only way to do it, but his preferred way, and another way that works just as well.

I like the thin walled SS spools with a large center hole... but the thin wall let's the bolt snap get unhooked. So I normally pass the line though the hole, double wrap the loop through the open double ender and just reclip through an other hole... that way if it comes undone there is a second way that it can't unspool.

Hi Achim - another helpful video.... I do not have pockets meaning I have to attache the SMB to a D-Ring on my BCD. I watched your video from 2017 and that is exactly how I set up the SMB for my Girlfriend since she won't need to detach the reel form the SMB. But I wonder about using the method you describe here when attaching to a D-Ring and not using pockets. Many thanks, Larry

The second method, you don't like, allows you to keep spool not only in packet but also you can clip it to any D-ring on your harness. Conclusion: This is the right way.

It also leaves the other end available to clip off in a pocket which the clip, wrap and clip doesn't allow. Some people put a third loop in the bottom of the large loop to allow pulling the end back through for use with gloves. I do that now. I used to use method 1 of just clip through a hole but when I didn't have pockets (like tropical) and clipped off, often to the butt D it easily unclipped and left me watching the spool unravel to depth. I was shocked how easy that happens.

Will ISE make those white spools again? I like this style with the dimple sides and no through hole as it can hold more line on a compact overall size

How you secure your spool would depend on the type used. Apeks for example will fall off utilizing the first method.

If you keep it in your pocket, you really only need to keep the line from unspooling. If you keep it clipped off to a D-ring, then definitely use the second method. I keep my Apeks spools in a pocket, and use the second method. That way I can take one out, and clip it off to a D-ring if I want to. I also have an odd way of clipping it off to the tie-on points in the pocket. I feed the bolt snap through the tie-on point, and then clip it off by feeding both threads through the gate. That way, if one should come out, it's still clipped of to the other. Apeks spools are expensive. I'd rather not lose one.

You didn’t demonstrate GUE preferences for dressing the tag end loop…
