One thing I love about the Efteling is that many attractions are inspired by Dutch history, culture and mythology. Some parts of the park give you the feeling that you travelled back in time to a world filled with mysteries. Furthermore Efteling definitely has the best music of any themepark in the world. It is so iconic that probably like 95% of people in the Netherlands will recognize the music from the big attractions like Vliegende Hollander and Joris en de draak. I am not even joking, it is that iconic.

what's so bizar about Phantasialand is the fact that even though it's so small in size it still has so much rides. and those rides all have amazing quality. And this park is in my opinion way cheaper then any park that comes even close to the experience you get at Phantasia. me and my friends could not afford to stay at europa park, disneyland or even Efteling. but somehow Phantasialand was way cheaper for such an experience! highly recommend it to anyone going near Bruhl, Germany!

Efteling, The Netherlands, began in 1952 (celebrating 70 years this year) and as you said, started with the fairytale forest. The Indian Waterlilies (as shown in your video) was invented by Queen Fabiola of Belgium. In 1982 the Python was opened and other coasters and darkrides were opened as well. The Gondoletta's sailing in the park was the original track to Fatamorgana, and was meant to be a test track, but then they decided to keep it as it was, so families could take a pause, enjoy the park while eating what they had brought along. So The track in Fatamorgana is a smaller copy of it! Efteling has received numerous prices incluiding the Best Amusement Park in Europe. Most theming was done by Anton Pieck untill the eighties, but the park still designs in his footpath! You'll notice that Pieck was hooked on the stories and theming of The Grimm Brothers. You probably missed the showground like in Phatasialand. Besides all this it Vogelrock is an indoor rollercoaster you didn't mention. I myself would place Efteling on nr. 2, but I grew up only 20km from there, so I am a bit biased, still happy it made your top 3 though. I would have rated Bakken Higher as well, as it is free entrance, pay per ride only. It has kept it's charm throughout the last few decades, and has a section of buildings with scenes from the Matador series, depicting Danish society during Worldwar 2 (1939-1946) But you're not really the target group. Thanks for your overview. Nice to see an American perspective.
@jarmoliebrand20052 жыл бұрын
I’m really biased as well as I too grew up with this park. But it truly is a different world while you’re there. I used to love them keeping older rides, which they still generally do, but I’m sad that Spookslot is now gone. Danse Macabre can become absolutely amazing, but Spookslot was the first big attraction and has a good, but hidden storyline, many Easter eggs and creative technology for the time. I don’t think any ride in the world will ever top Vliegende Hollander for me, though. It’s my first coaster ever and it is probably the most complete ride on earth. It does a little bit of absolutely everything. Also recently got braver and braver and rode Baron 1898 for the first time. Absolutely amazing experience. There is consolation for those unwilling to ride it, as the ride, offride looks so cinematic. Vogelrok is underrated. Music and effects make the coaster feel really fast. Dark rides are just class. Fata Morgana is really dark at times (Efteling is willing to go quite dark with some attractions, which I like) and I love Arabian atmospheres in general. Dreamflight is so sweet and creative. The ‘coaster’ part is really fun. Symbolica is amazing and uses trackless system well. Due to nostalgia, I do prefer Fata Morgana and Dreamflight, though. Villa Volta has been one of my favourite rides there for a long time. I can quote both preshows (the story is really good). The music is… something else. It’s actually made me cry at times. Imo there isn’t any theme park music that surpasses this. It feels tragic, mysterious, ominous and in the end… really epic. I love that the mansion itself doesn’t look all that creepy, except for the woman waving her arms. It’s a creepy and unsettling theme, but it’s not dark. Your surroundings don’t need to be pitch black in order for them to be scary (although Vliegende Hollander does benefit from that, the dark ride section really, really scared me as a kid). The fairy tale forest is iconic and it’s the park’s soul. My favourite fairy tale is definitely the Indian Waterlilies. It’s so charming and the music from Afrikaan Beat is just… you can’t stay still. This place is forever in my heart. In my first lucid dream (a dream in which you’re aware that you’re dreaming), I stood next to Baron 1898 (because it’s so gorgeous). I also want to write fantasy and sci-fi stories and I’ve drawn inspiration from Efteling’s storytelling.

I know this park since the mid 80's and they perfected their way over the years because they could not get more land to get bigger. They just built a African village to connect that area with the Berlin part with so many great details just to get quicker to another area. Hope they can get more useable space in 2025 and make the park even better.

Fun facts: "Plopsaland De Panne" was originally Meli Park, a park about bees, because it was build by the factory that made honey. Walibi 'Hollland' started as 'De Flevohof' or in English: "The Flevohof", whist Walibi Belgium was originally... Walibi. Expedition Zork in Toverland was before the retheming Backstroke. phantasialand has just one single problem and that is space. they are trying to buy land for years, but its hard as its either people living there (also the reason they dont build that high) or its "reserved nature". so if they want to build more big attractions they have to stack or wreck something else for it.

A little side note regarding the name “Hals über Kopf”: It is basically the exact translation of „head over heels“ and is definitely also used in love songs - one of which can be exactly translated to „head over heels in love“ - or when talking about falling in love with someone. In context to the roller coaster, it is basically a word play that then relates to the inversions. (I‘m German by the way haha) - Great Video! 😊

I was pretty sure you'd rank Phantasialand 1st and Energylandia 2nd because you're focused on thrill coasters. One thing Phantasialand doesn't do right however (yes, they do have their flaws) is one you wouldn't notice: They absolutely p--- off a lot of fans and frequent visitors with policies and pricing (they even decided they don't do annual passes any more) and the maintenance of their lower-key rides leaves a lot to be desired. It could be my number one park as well - if management were at the same level as the ride lineup and quality of their high profile attractions. For spending many days, I personally find that Europa Park and Efteling just offer more repeatability. On quiet days, you can get so many rides at Europa you won't miss those last 0.5g of force - in fact, when you can spend an entire hour on a major coaster without getting off, it's probably better that way. Efteling just enchants with their detail level, the amount of nature and their dark rides. As you said - they are very close together. And by the way, I don't think visiting the Disney Paris parks would have changed your top 5 at all :)

Ahhh Europa Park... My opinion here might be nostalgia driven but for me it just has so much value... I remember the first time going there. Everything felt so big and well thought through... the theming is it's biggest strength, no doubt about it. In that time Silver Star was brand new and I remember standing on the parking lot and looking at this beast. When I was standing in line, the epic soundtrack hyped me up even more. When I took place in the seats... Ohhhh boyyyy I was nervous. The lifthill felt like an eternity and I remember almost shitting my pants but the first drop is something I'll never forget and have again. Theming wise, my number 1 roller coaster in EP has to be Euro Mir. Badass soundtrack, awesome Spiral lifthill and intsense drops and helixes. Even if a ride on it can feel a bit clunky. But the rest is also great. Poseidon, Blue Fire, Wodan, Eurosat... They might not be the most intense, that's for sure but altough they are "family coasters", I think their theming makes up for it. A day in EP will always bring a smile on your face. I've been to a lot of theme parks now and altough they were all great, EP will always be my number 1. Great video! 👍🏻

I just see it as a family business being held back from expansion for 30 years now, which is a struggle. Add to that the pandemic (i.e. massive reduction of income and later a lack of employees) and I can understand such decisions. That‘s why I decided that now is the time to simply support my favorite park and just be happy that it still exists. 🙂

About the new upcoming coaster in Europa Park (Voltron) It’s a newer version of Big Dipper. It’s gonna have a vertical launch, a triple launch with a spike and several inversions with even one or two dark ride section. So I do think that this right gonna put the park for many ppl even higher then. I do know it’s also gonna have almost the same length of Silver Star (1600m) So im really hyped for this right. Europa Park is my overall favorite park. The theming alone is stunning and the amount of attractions is so huge. The shows are superior, the attractions are all family friendly (mostly) but I do like it. And yeah, ofc it could have 1-2 more thrilling coasters like phantasialand has, but I have hopes that it’s gonna get added in the future. Europa Park has the money, the space and sources to add all those thrill rides. I’m just sad that the park owner doesn’t want to have such thrill rides like other parks have. But since it’s a family company (Mack) and Roland Mack sons are gonna take over the park in the future, I’m sure that they will add more thrilling rides in the future. They were involved in most of the attractions that wouldn’t happen without them, like Wodan (the woody) and blue fire the launch coaster. So I have hopes for this park. The only thing I enjoy in phantasialand are the 5 coasters, the log flume and the river rapids. But beside that it doesn’t have much attractions that I ride. Therefore it’s quite small and tight and they also can’t expand and have to remove older attractions for new once. But the theming is really stunning, it just don’t bring the feeling like europa park to me. Europa Park just has this special and magic feeling and so much more to experience than just coasters. So I always put this park over everything else

Was pretty surprised (in a good way) to see Walibi Belgium above Walibi Holland. Happy to see it reach number 8 on your list. Kondaa and Psyké Underground are my personal favorites, with Tiki waka, Calamity Mine and Cobra being really good as well. As you said, Loup Garou (which just means Werewolf in french) is quite rough, but nowhere near as rough as Vampire (Vekoma SLC). Been on it twice and never again. Another ride I enjoy, while not a thrill ride, is the Challenge of Tutankhamon, one of those interactive darkrides you mentioned that's themed around Ancient Egypt. Good theming, with the queue also having some animatronics to get you hyped. It even includes a secret route if your cart earns enough points. I do hope to visit more parks in the future, as the only park I visited outside of Belgium was Disneyland Paris. Sadly this was before I really got into thrill rides, so I never rode any of the good rides. Really hoping to visit some of the Dutch or German parks in the future (especially Phantasialand)

Can’t like this video enough! I’ve been waiting for one just like it, a guide to Europe! And by someone like yourself that is from the States and has ridden as much as you have. Not sure if you’re interested or have the time, as this does cover quite a bit of ground and really has enough to offer anyway, but I would love to see lengthier videos for each of these parks! Maybe group together a few of the smaller ones but basically a guide to each park, with more tips. Where the best food is, which rides had ops issues if any, best time of year to go, etc. just a thought! Great work here and am super jealous! 7 weeks doing this would indeed be a trip of a lifetime.

@j-cat53152 жыл бұрын
Very happy to see the top 2, as I've just been to Energylandia and I'm hoping to go to Phantasialand next. I have some tips for Energylandia: 1) You can get a two day ticket for 319pln (just under 60 pound with access to the water park also included). You'll need the 2 day ticket to experience everything I'd say for certain. Even if it's quiet and the water park is closed it's just too much rollercoaster for one day I think. 2) I went in the absolute height of summer (August) and never queued longer than 30-40 minutes even for the biggest rides 3) When people talk about queue lines, don't get this confused with 'queues'. The queue lines are randomly enormous (see my channel for a full walk of the ridiculous Zadra queue line) but are never full to capacity. If they were you'd be there for about a week!!! 4) Try to ride Hyperion in the back row, middle seats for the best experience. I enjoyed this specific seat so much I think I even preferred it to Zadra, and I LOVED zadra. But this specific ride I had was one of my favourites of all time. I have heard people say to try to avoid the outer seats as they are a little rough but I can't comment. I was somehow lucky enough to get a middle seat every time despite being a single rider. The person next to me on an outer seat loved the back row ride also though. 5) On Zadra and Hyperion, of the 4 queue lines the one on the far right moves a lot quicker than the other 3 for some reason. This does mean you won't get a front row seat though (it's okay back is better anyway :) ) 6) If you're coming from Krakow, get the train to Zator at 8:18 (platform 1 or 2). When you get to Zator there's a choo-choo train which takes you from Zator station direct to the front gate in time for the opening ceremony :) There's only two trains there in the morning though (I think the other one is around 9:30?) so if you're thinking of coming just for the afternoon as far as I can see it's not an option by train. The same choo-choo train will also take you back to Zator station for at the end of the day to return for the only return train to Krakow around 8.20... 7) This probably won't apply now, but don't start with Hyperion if it's busy. It's right at the entrance to the park and opens earlier than anything else so everyone heads there. Instead head over to the other side, get yourself on Mayan Coaster and Formula which will have no queue, then head on over to Abyssus so you're finally warmed up nicely for the brilliant Zadra nearby :). This part of the park will be much quieter in the morning. I'd say it didn't get busy til 12ish-and that was in the height of summer :). Then head back to the beginning to do Hyperion which will now have quietened down. 8) The park was open later than stated online both days I was there (online said 8 but it was open until 9). Happy days (except for the fact the train to Krakow was 8.20. Oh well L). 9) There's also an Energylandia bus which you can get from the bus station (which is in the train station) in Krakow *most of these tips are for the summer so worth investigating e.g timings/buses trains and water park hours. But oh well, it's written now. Have fun!! I can't wait for Phantasialand next :)

Bakken, in Denmark, is as far as I know the oldest amusement park! As life in Copenhagen was rough, and people often got sick, they often took a trip to Bakken for the fresh water well, said to be healing. Well drinking clear water instead of the horible water in the town, will certainly help. But it became soon a place for leisure. Thus Bakken was born! They started with music, clowns, place to picknick, horse riding, and well, all you have now. It's one of my favourite places.

Meh, I've just spent 4 days at PortAventura and wasn't all that impressed. The theming is pretty solid and they have some excellent shows and good food, but the rides were lacking. Shambhala is excellent and easily the best thing they have there. Dragon Khan had a neat layout, but it was REALLY rough. It'll be better if they'd upgrade to those vest restraints. Furius Baco was a goddamn torture machine. A launch coaster like that should be buttery smooth, which it most definitely was not. The wooden coaster Stampida was also ROUGH, and not in a good way. The water rides weren't bad, and I was pleasantly surprised by the El Diablo mine train. And Ferrari Land was honestly such a scam. They charge extra for it and the only thing there is to do there is Red Force, which was a one-and-done for me since the wait time is nuts for a 10-second ride, and it wasn't even as smooth as I expected. Major disappointment.

Don’t think it’s that surprising Efteling is so high up, speaking from a long time visitor. It was Europe’s most visited park in 2022, even surpassing Europa park and Disneyland Paris. The park doesn’t need elite coaster to be great. On the contrary, I think it’s better if they’ll never build a huge thrill coaster (but they can build something more thrilling than Joris and the Draak for sure). Elite dark rides are criminally underrated. Storytelling, atmosphere and music is top notch. All the buildings are built with real materials, which is always a plus.

I love how all Americans that talk about the Efteling call it the Dutch Disneyland. While it’s actually the other way around! Walt Disney visited the Efteling and actually got a lot of ideas from it for Disneyland! Also I read that a few people that worked on Symbolica got hired at Disneyland to design rides for them! As a Dutch person I have always loved the Efteling a lot. The theming, the food, the atmosphere and all the rides.

Unfortunately it’s a fairytale. Walter (Elias) Disney never visited the Efteling. He has heard about it, but he never got any ideas from it. He actually got ideas from a other theme park called ‘Griffith Park’ in Los Angeles. There are a few other parks that inspired Walter to build things for Disneyland, but unfortunately Efteling is not on that list.
