Why are there so many different styles of Amtrak cars- both 1 level and 2 level? I love your shots of SD county- especially in Cardiff I always park by the train tracks to surf!
@CoasterFan21057 жыл бұрын
Thanks Whitney! There are two main reasons. First, some of the cars are older than others. Second is that different trains use different equipment. For instance, due to clearance issues with tunnels back east, most long distance trains on the east coast use single level cars while all west coast long distance trains use bilevel cars. Additionally, trains that are at least partially funded by individual states often have their own special equipment. An example of this is the Talgo trains that run on Amtrak Cascades or the Bilevel "California" style cars used on Amtrak California trains.

I guess that would be the best way of explaining all the rules, do's and don't's etc. Questions like "Don't they fence in railroads in the States like they do in the UK?" and "Why do trains in the US sound their horns all the time, even if they're not at a crossing point?"and "If a truck or car stops on a railroad crossing and causes an accident, who does the law hold responsible?" and "What are the laws governing speed limits for Steam, Diesel and Electric locos both on regular lines and on Heritage lines?" I suppose I'm comparing US laws with those in the UK, which I obviously have a knowledge of. That sort of thing and you can maybe just answer these things right off the cuff and I'm being a bit pedantic about it all! Hope that makes sense to you Mike! Best wishes and thanks for these great videos you upload - I really enjoy finding out more about US Railroads! Ken

Sounds good to me Mike! It's absolutely fascinating and a history lesson of the US. I've become very interested in US history of the railroads and the part they've played in the development of US. I guess you may be able to access it off the Internet on the BBC website. That's really the basis of my request. Hope that's ok Ken

I like how the trains in America have cab cars in each end so that it connects to the locomotive, and the locomotives don't have to move to other and nor switch sides. I wish in all trains in the states have like these even in the sleeper trains. It just acts like a diesel multiple unit.

What about the Bud car (self propelled) would that be considered a cab car? And what happens when a cab car hits a truck; does the engine in the back keep pushing and or how long? Good video Mike. Vic Canada
@CoasterFan21059 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Vic! I think those cars are considered "self propelled", as they have their own means of movement. Although, I have actually seen them used as cab cars on some railroads. I'll have to do a video on those at some point. If a cab car were to hit something, the train would begin to stop as soon as the engineer applied the air brakes on the train. I think the transmission of info is pretty instantaneous so unless something happened to the multiple unit connections, it would respond just like the controls of the locomotive.

Another use of non-powered control units that I remember seeing on the Long Island Railroad was as generator cars, made by conversion of de-motored F or FP units, to enable the use of freight locomotives for traction on commuter trains that needed head end power, without having to try to figure out how to cram a generator into the freight locomotive (although this has also been done, elsewhere). I think Metro North might have done the same thing, but I didn't ride on Metro North trains (then or now), so I'm not sure about that.

Like the comment on the NPCU's and the Metrolink Rotem cars. The one downside that I see to having the Rotems with longer noses is the inability to place them mid train. I know Caltrain runs extra cab cars as bike cars mid train where it functions as a normal coach but the Rotems don't have that flexibility. I see that being a problem for Metrolink which runs varied consists while Amtrak's consists are fairly straight forward on the San Joaquin's and Surfliner which doesn't pose a problem to the usage of NPCU's.

Hello CoasterFan, great content. I'm always learning more from these episodes even through I know a lot about these. What came to my attention is: why do some commuter train services organize their locomotives to face outbound? For example: MBTA always faces their locomotives towards away from the city while the cab is faced towards the terminal, while for NJT its organization is randomized?
