One thing worth mentioning about DK is that it actually used to run faster, before the 2014 season, the ride would pass through the mcbr with no brakes. During the 2013-14 off season, the ride recieved a software update and began trimming on the mcbr. Prior to the software update, the 2nd loop was easily the most intense part of the ride, to the point that it was essentially an upright helix.

This is true and very unfortunate. I rode it in 2012 and it became my favourite coaster. But then I rode it again in 2014 (and 2017) and it was no longer the same. Everything after the MCBR is weaker now. The loop, turnaround, corkscrews and even the drop out of the midcourse. If you were sitting on the right side of the train, close to the back, you would even get a pop of airtime as the train twisted out of the MCBR. It’s a real shame

You're quite excellent at capturing footage of these rides. For my money this channel has the best combination of informative commentary and original footage compared to all other coaster content. Thank you for pointing out the "threading" the track does during the layout, with the brake run going under the cobra roll and the track going through the loop. Those were nice details.

@FlavioCJM4 жыл бұрын
At 3:20 you point out how the loop shreds through a previous section of track. It's cool and all but legend has it that piece of track actually means a lot more than it appears to. First of all, you may want to take a look at this pre-1995 model of how Dragon Khan was supposed to look: thumbnail.pa-community.com/tr:q-91/9d/29/92f0c4681cf098800cf44a78fbaf/a56623249e62845e662573c05a565cba.JPG Yeah, same color and all but... The layout's completely different. That's because Dragon Khan was initially supposed to be a massive Vekoma multilooper with interlocking loops! But stakeholders (Anheuser Busch at that time, mainly) decided that Dragon Khan HAD to be a B&M Coaster presumably since it was supposed to be the park's icon for many years to come. So they got rid of some things at other parts of the park* and spent that money on a B&M sitdown that (here's the unconfirmed "legendary" part) paid tribute to its Vekoma origins by interlocking a loop with a zero-g-roll. ;) *What was removed in order to keep the same budget was a giant mountain in the middle of the Far West area that covered parts of the log flume and of El Diablo (Mine Train): thumbnail.pa-community.com/tr:q-91/aa/f7/41b50c318ab04e80eeb8e303d91a/76543403d495fb3fe40686ab28c9420a.JPG Additionally, and this is quite funny, they also removed a fragment of El Diablo's layout in this operation so there you have why its second lift hill literally takes you straight to the third lift hill as if something was missing in there. 😂
@themeparkwirral4 жыл бұрын
Wow! That's super interesting to hear, it's weird to think that right where our B&M sitdown is, would have sat a Vekoma multilooper! I bet those interlocking loops would have been breathtaking to look at though

Hey Taylor. I've never ridden Dragon Khan, but I'm an avid Kumba fan, and I think I can shed some light on why Kumba feels like such a special ride, and why Dragon Khan might feel like it's B&M just going through the rounds. First, Kumba was the first.. well, a lot of things. A lot of the elements on Kumba had been done before, but not in this way, and others were world's firsts. The Cobra roll had only appeared on Vekoma Boomerangs. The Dive loop had only appeared on some Togo coasters. This is the first time those elements were designed to be perfectly smooth, forceful, well paced, and placed in the layout in an intelligent way. Of course, the loop around the lift hill was a world's first, as was the interlocking corkscrews. T o me, all of these elements feel like they're shoehorned into B&M layouts because B&M knows they work. But for Kumba, they elements are taken with purpose. These brand new or re-engineered inversions were literally created just to fit into the layout of Kumba. The dive loop is positioned how it is so that the train can go back towards the station and do a zero-g roll over it. The Cobra roll isn't like a ride like Kraken where it turns the train in the other direction, only to go back in the same direction anyways. The Cobra roll is there so that the train can turn around to the rest of the layout. And furthermore, the Cobra Roll literally goes on both sides of the train tracks and wraps around a bridge. The inversion was MADE for Kumba. And yes, though the MCBR hits hard and the rest of the layout is low to the ground, that's why it stays intense. The interlocking corkscrews, set right in between the entrance to the ride and the lift hill/first inversion, were literally designed to be an iconic vista for what would be the signature coaster of a theme park. All of the elements on Kumba were MADE for the coaster. And that's why it does these elements that seem generic now so perfectly. Also, Kumba is older than Dragon Khan, and it's the first sit down looper. That's likely why the pacing is faster and the inversions are snappier and more forceful, and why the second half isn't neutered; B&M was still trying to prove themselves to the industry. And this coaster, in tandem with Batman, did just that. Let's also acknowledge the area the coasters are in. Dragon Khan, while huge, is dwarfed by Shambhala, and the rides don't interact in any meaningful way. If anything, Shambhala diminishes the impact of Dragon Khan. In addtion, Khan is in an area by itself, with no paths in the layout. Kumba, on the other hand, stands on its own, and is extremely loud, so it's by far the most dominant ride in Congo. In addition, Kumba is absolutely a part of this themed area. It flies over the station, wraps around a bridge, dives under the entrance path, goes directly next to the station, and then dives into a tunnel underneath it. It is visible from so many parts of the area, including the train and the rapids. Plus, every part of the ride after the loop is under tree cover. Since Florida is already tropical, the illusion of the Congo jungle is easily created with beds of flowers and canopies that create canopies, plus the mist machines that are always working in the area. Kumba has a tunnel, dives into multiple trenches, and overall interacts with its environment much more than Khan. Finally.. Kumba was literally the first modern mega-looper.. ever. Vortex, Viper, Shockwave, and GASM existed before, but only as coathanger Arrow designs. Kumba took the concept of a huge roller coaster focusing only on inversions to the next level with modern engineering that is built to deliver whip, positive forces, speed, and a smooth tracking ride. Also, Kumba has a final helix and Khan doesn't, and a helix makes any coaster way better. That's the nail in the coffin for Khan.

I remember Dragon Khan to be one of the most intense and disorienting rides I've ridden. On top with Kumba, Hulk and Kraken. Last time was in 2012 so the MCBR might have ruined the second half since then but when I rode it the second part was VERY intense (the first too). Of course it looks a little "crushed" and dwarfed by Shambhala but the view and skyline is breathtaking. I loved that ride! Concerning Furius Baco: sometimes the outer seats vibrate way too much to be enjoyable, sometimes not. If you're easily displeased with vibrations, choose to go for the inner seats.

i’ve only ridden dragon khan once and i personally really liked it. i have to agree, hulk’s theming is incredible and furius baco is more intense, but if anyone is watching this wondering if they should do it or not, maybe you’re a little nervous, it’s way less intense than it looks. the first minute or so is taller and more intense but the second half is not as tall and is just as fun! also i got so lucky, even though i wasn’t allowed pick my seat i was put in the back!! 🤪

Yikes. I must heavily disagree with the assessment of this coaster because I'd easily give it a 9/10 after taking 30+ rides on it in two days. (1 point taken away for the classic B&M raddle in some rows) It's been said for quite a long time that Dragon Khan is the most intense B&M and I must certainly agree. In addition to it's extra inversion, when larger B&Ms usually have 7, they made each one of them with snap on this. That dive loop, the zero-g, cobra roll, and the corkscrews are taken at a speed which I think matches the same pace as Katun at Mirabilandia. As for the Kumba comparison, it's literally the same ride but with an extra inversion and some more g's thrown it. Sure, it's not as drawn out as it's Tampa counterpart, but it makes up for it with a non-stop layout and almost no dead moments (except for the mid-coarse). So, sorry Coaster Studios, but you guys got this one wrong. ;/ P.S: Furius Baco isn't better than this coaster
@truniekk42484 жыл бұрын
you really seem not to understand what an opinion is xD but in my opinion, the ride was really boring. It felt really slow and lacked intensity. Where did you hear that DK is the most intense B&M tho? I think that Katun for example is way more intense, and the pacing is perfect. I mean maybe i don't like DK because i don't really care about inversions at all...

I remember riding it in 1996 right after the park opened and it was pretty impressive back then. I’m pretty sure the first loop was the biggest vertical loop in the world on opening. Also yep the mid course trims didn’t operate so the trains really flew through the drop and inversions afterwards. The corkscrews and turn around were particularly tight at higher speed.

If it helps, the reason Kumba feels better is because it’s pacing is more consistent. The first half of this is similar, if not even faster paced than Kumba, but the mid-course makes the remained of the ride much slower paced for its second half than Kumba.

This coaster actually got to me--it's a great ride, but I think 8 of these 1990s B&M inversions is one or two more than I can easily take in one serving. They're all quite forceful and I came off on the edge of nausea, which almost never happens to me. Compared to Shambhala it's very intense, not messing around.
@William_Does_Coasters2255 Жыл бұрын
I went October 2022 and they wouldn’t let us choose our seats and we were but in the back. It was very fun and intense but I also experienced PAIN because it is fairly rough. I think what would fix this ride is a retrack, some 90s B&Ms like Hulk at Universal IOA and Nemesis at Alton Towers have had or are having them. I think after Uncharted this year, PortAventura needs to retrack Dragon Khan.

Here is my answer to your question of why Kumba is a better and more like Coaster than Dragon Khan (other than the reasons you mentioned) and the answer is Nostalgia - think of the people who went and saw “Star Wars” or “2001: A Space Odyssey” in the Theatre when those movies had the best special effects at the time, this along with the pacing, forcefulness, iconic curved drop, loop around the lift hill, lush setting, and that Kumba doesn’t have a better/updated coaster right next door are the reasons why Kumba beats Dragon Khan👍🏻

However, I haven't ridden Kumba which i imagine is the king of sit down coasters.

I found Dragon Khan incredibly rough when I rode it, due to that it's my least favourite B&M, despite that I'd probably give it another chance, unlike Furius Baco, which I'd only ride again if it received the new Intamin restraints.

Quick tip for both rides: move your head in the direction of the elements, and make sure to avoid the seats on the sides, going for the center seats if possible.

I've ridden Dragon Kahn twice, never Kumba. Watched a video of Kumba : it's all about the interplay between the layout and the landscape. I found Dragon Kahn to be intense but monotonous : once you're past the zero-G roll the ride has pretty much only positive G force without variety, and the landscaping is the same everywhere : some semi-open hills, with scattered trees here and there. And when crushed in your seat by 2~3Gs you can't distinguish the track elements so you have no idea where you are on the Dragon Kahn. But on Kubma, you get close calls with paths, bridges, trees, a tunnel. You have a view on the double-corkscrew during the mid-course break run.

hmm you know looking at Dragon Khun and Kumba I noticed that the number of cars on the trains is different Kumba has 8 cars per train while Dragon Khun only has 7 cars per trains and looking where the transfer track is they couldn't have it separate from the station cause the lift hill and cobra roll supports took up that space.

I will do some reviews of them after the next time I visit again. Its been 3 years since I went, so I feel if I reviewed them now, it wouldn't be as accurate as they could be.

Is this your last favorite B&M sit-down? I have only ridden hulk and i loved it. With my credit count at just 46, Hulk is securely in my top 10.

It's a weak B&M coaster, was very rough in summer 2019, lots of headbanging through the elements. Did not feel very forceful at all, came off with a massive headache. Its an old coaster and probably needs some new trains
