I was the PXO and commissioned Morro Bay and then served as the XO her first 3 years of service. It is great to see she is still doing what she was designed to do. She was a fantastic unit and we were blessed with a fantastic crew that rose to all situations

Old Timer here...My favorite boat has always been the classic 1960`s Harbor Tug. But after watching videos of these USCG Icebreaker/Tugs, like The Morro Bay, here, I believe a change in the roster is called for...These Icebreaker/Tugs look like the classic Harbor Tug--- but on STEROIDS ! (Please post an ONBOARD TOUR next.) Pinch yourselves, crew, if you are lucky enough to have the privilege of working on one of these AMAZING (and handsome) "aquatic workmules" ! Y`all are living MY dream.

Blusnby2. I was on WTGB-103. And they replaced the Raritan class tug. 3000SHP was what they raited when commissioned. They were a nice platform. The whole point of these breakers were to replace the wind class breaker that was in Milwaukee, IE the Westwind and to assist the Mackinaw while working in tandem. though they were designed to break around 18 inches of ice, it was not uncommon to breakthru 3 ft of blue water ice. It was only those 10-foot windrows that gave us a hard time LOL. C e r i reported, we broke ice from sturgeon Bay to Green Bay and back in 18 hours. The year before it took the Acacia three days to make the same trip with half the thickness of ice. Very capable boat.

I'm watching this in Morro Bay. Amused that a coast guard boat so named is working in the cold and ice.

Back in the day, the call sign of the ship was painted on the flying bridge deck. Guess red paint is hard to come by these days. 🤭

It's ironic that an ice breaker would be named after a place in California
@tc1uscg654 жыл бұрын
It's a "Bay Class" cutter. Just like the old 82 and 95 foot cutters. The 82's were named after POINTS and the 95 after CAPES. 6of the 9 bay class breakers are in the Great Lakes. Neah Bay-Washington, Katmai Bay-Alaska but the boat is in Cleveland OH and Soo Ste Marie MI. The others are Bristol Bay, Biscayne Bay, Mobile Bay and Morro Bay. 3 others are on the east coast and the 10th bay class breaker was cancelled (Curtis Bay) which is named after the where the Coast Guard ship yard is located south of Baltimore MD. Damn, don't ask me what I had for breakfast 3 days ago but I can remember all this crap? WTH But FWIW, this ships were built to replace the Raritan class 110ft tugs which had re-enforced hulls for breaking ice and ended up in the Great Lakes.
