Agreed, one of the best bikes (if not the best) I have ever owned. I was looking to buy a 40s or 50s BSA B31, but decided I didn't want all the problems or maintenance that goes with a 70 year old bike. At 66 and retired, I've definitely made the right choice. The smiles per mile make it all worth while. Keep filming Bruce, I love your videos 👍.

Yes - all agreed. We are not too dissimilar in age - I'm 72, and I well remember as a lad buying cheap old thumpers in the 1960s and early 1970s. They went for buttons back then. Once I got a 1939 M20 side valve for £15. It was all there and all working, and still painted in its wartime army khaki with wihte numbers and emblems painted on it. I remember riding a B31, loaned by a pal, and every time i used the decompressor to stop teh engine, he exhaust valve stuck wide open and several times in our jaunt around Northumberland, we had the head off the thing, clonked the exhaust valve with a spanner, and it pinged shut again, enabling a ten minute re-assembly and a continued journey. They were VERY troublesome in my experience. I'm sure that when i get my Classic 350 this week, it won't be like that. I was actually offered a genuine 10000 mile, one owner from new, BSA B40 last week. Some old fellah had bought it new and kept it until he died. I had several good looks at it. It was on offer for £2100, but I walked away and bought the classic. It had all the horrible features of those old bikes: oil leaks, 6volt electrics, and who knows if you can buy the parts?

I really enjoyed that mate. I'm a new rider and have just put the 350th mile on my Classic 350, so it's great for me to see a sensible, honest review of someone who uses theirs every day rain or shine. It's interesting about the rear wheel - I hadn't heard about that before. The hinge is a good idea. You obviously know tons more about riding than me and have tons more experience, but one thing we share is that look back at the bike after we park up - that same need to find a seat in the cafe with a view of the car park so we can look at it. These things have a heart, somehow! I happily subscribed so I see all your videos - keep them coming.

Great review. I'm currently in India riding around on a rented 350 Classic. For the last twenty years all my bikes have been Italian: Ducatis and Mv Agustas, and when I saw what bhp the 350 'boasts' I was rather concerned - It has literally over 7 times less power than my sportsbike, and I thought I'd be really bored, but the opposite has proved to be the case. I'm really enjoying it. It handles well, its very comfortable, the fuel consumption is beyond my wildest dreams, it looks authentically retro, and best of all, its fun! In fact, I'm enjoying it so much I've decided I'm going to buy one when I get home. I can't believe how affordable they are! Well done RE for making motorcycling affordable to the masses. I've been tossing up wherever to get the Chrome classic, the green Signals, or desert Signals. Your vid has made my mind up: I'm going to get a green one! Cheers for that :) How much are the panniers btw, they look really nice?

Great you have decided on an Army theme Classic! You will spend less time cleaning and more riding miles! As they are indeed so cheap to buy and run! I think RE have re wrote the rule book with the J series bikes as so much fun, quality for such a new purchase price and as you say only 20hp! 😁👍👍 Cheers Bruce

This was brilliant. This bike seems to have nailed what I love/d about riding. Owned lots of European and Japanese sport touring stuff since 86. Just want some comfort and fun. Backroads and also very important, easy DIY and reasonable cost. The cost per ride has to make sense, and this one does. And looks gorgeous too. Very well done to RE and to Coastrider.

A great comprehensive review Bruce, brilliant, and you definitely put the miles in proving what a hardy bike the classic is! I've had mine since July and I've just passed 2,500 miles on it and loved every minute of it , as I've said before I have two other bikes but I love riding the classic the most , I've fitted the pannier frames from Hitchcocks and a pair of Lomo bags, and their 60 litre hold all for my tent etc to go in. I've fitted a hand made straight through piece of stainless pipe to replace the catalytic pipe and the Hitchcocks air filter plate with the standard filter and it breathes easier and sounds fantastic. I'm looking forward to putting more miles on through out the winter and doing a couple of bike rallies as well. Cheers again 👍 Mel .

In reference to the performance mods, there's a recent upload by "Tigerness", and he's raving about the difference in performance after fitting the Hitchcock hi-lift cam. It certainly sounds like that's the best of all the things you can do to widen the spread of power on these 350's. Hope that may be of interest to you. Great owners review BTW.

There’s something about a torquey single that connects to your being , loved it at 17 just about 66 now and it’s the same if not better. Winter plan is luggage rack made from a Reynolds 531 ladies bike frame, why? I dunno, the thought of camping gear and fishing rod on an light bike just works. Great video. My new Classic 350 is being delivered this week, so I am keen to get started with it. Just one comment: You say the engine is bound to be good for 30,000 - 40,000 miles..... Surely more than that though? Old Honda commuters like the cg125 and the Cb250 regularly do 75,000 plus if they are owned by sensible riders who change the oil and don't thrash the living daylights out of them. I'd hope that this new J series engine - looked after properly would be the same. Thanks for the videos - always enjoy them.

Totally agree with running on E5. I run my bikes and cars on E5 and I find they run smoother with more power and I do get more miles per gallon. Thanks Bruce, a very comprehensive review and you've certainly put the little bike to the test! It'll be interesting to find out what it's like after 3 years. At the end there you summed up what happened to the British motorcycle industry in the 1970s to a tee. I had a Norton Dominator and a Triumph Bonneville in the early 70s and they were incredible bikes to ride, but when Honda brought out the 750 and 500 Fours that you knew would get you to work and back every day and do long rides for fun at the weekend without leaving you stranded, many bikers including myself and a lot of my mates bought them in the thousands. I traded in the Bonneville for a 500 Four, got £110 for the Bonneville as far as I can remember and paid £620 for the Honda, I've still got the receipt somewhere! Mind you, I sometimes wish I still had that Bonneville😄. Cheers, Mick

Just a pity I got nae confidence to do work on it, as that be part of the enjoyment. My only grip, is I just wish I get more feet on the ground, but that’s not the bike that’s me, short arse, with 27 inch inside leg.😊 Oh I was in Inverbervie (Bervie) yesterday on Rebelene, went down to the shore, large car park. And open shore line. With a pill box visible to your left. (Was in my mind, but was aware you were riding home)
@Tonyv1951 Жыл бұрын
On leg length - yes. I'm 29 inside leg and I was a bit tip toe on it on my test ride. That worries me. I ride rough back roads in Northumberland and at times I pause at the side of a narrow road to allow safe passage to a delivery van and I can't always choose what the ground is like. I dropped my honda cb250 this summer when I put my foot down hill onto gravel as I stopped and my foot just slid away and down we went with me ending up lying on top of the bike with arms and legs spread out like a spider. No damage to speak of, but I would HATE to do that to my pristine new Classic 350 in Halcyon Black. I dread that, and think I will be looking for a low rider seat to get an extra inch of leg length.

@@Tonyv1951 the Classic has a higher seat height than the Meteor, so we’re probably kinda in same boat. I have the low seat fitted, but it’s only 11mm lower, but every little bit helps, I guess. I just bought the touring seat from the Ecosse closure sale. I plan the take to an upholstery shop, and see, if they can take at least 25mm of the padding out, but keeping the structure of the seat, as it looks better, but that’s for the winter. I also purchased a Honda Rebel seat, but want 50mm added to it, for my Rebel. Be a job lot. Lol

I thought the top speed was restricted electronically. ? So you would need to ‘jailbreak’it?
@Coastriderscotland6 ай бұрын
Hi, far as i know the top speed is set wlectronicaly by the thottle body senser and swapping for the Hunter takes the speed up to around 80 mph 😁👍

Quick question...may have missed it in the video, did you keep the fuel x on the bike and do you still feel it needs it with the open air and exhaust?
@Coastriderscotland11 ай бұрын
Yes and yes but I forgot to mention it in my review! 🤣😁 I don’t think it does any harm to leave it on if it keeps the fuel mixture sweet 👍 Cheers Bruce

Just a thought. Like you I love classic bikes but I just could never use them in the same way as my modern Enfield. In the end I came to the conclusion that safety had to be my priority if I realistically wanted to enjoy riding as much as I want to. I wanted a classic 350 but decided on the meteor 350 instead because of my fear of punctures. I fitted the classic 350 seat and a rear rack. I find it more comfortable than the classic and just as good to ride in a spirited style. I was thinking that it would probably be cheaper to source a meteor and just as easy to transform it like your bike. You would compromise on not having the spoked wheels which I prefer myself but you would also have the larger front wheel diameter and alloys. Just a thought. I share your sentiments on these small bikes and I feel that I'm missing nothing by not riding something with 100 bhp. I have taken my bike from central Scotland to the Isle of man and also up north on the North coast 500. Great bikes and a greart channel. Keep up the great work. Cheers

Hi that’s a good idea fitting classic parts on a Meteor and being able to build a similar bike for cheaper purchase costs 👍😁 Thanks cast wheels look ok on the classics looking at the films of Tiger Ness who fitted them, I would set off anywhere tomorrow on my 350 I have that much confidence and happiness and comfort riding it! 😁👍👍👍 Cheers Bruce

Just a quick shout out to owners of higher milage RE 350. Mines done 18000. A few weeks ago she stalled a couple of times. couple of days later she cut out repeatably. if I stopped and waited she’d start again. Then would cut out again. No engine warning light. Used the little diagnostic devise and it said fuel fault. Changed the plug just in case. Nope So I deduced Fuel pump. Changed it; no joy. so then went injector. Nope. So then went throttle body as it appeared it may be the throttle position sensor. Nope. Ok so as a last resort, oxygen sensor new coil and a spark plug. Nope. Gave up and sent it to local dealer. Why didn’t I go there first. Well they wouldn’t honour the warranty because I only had them do the first service. I’d done the rest myself. Well after two hours of them scratching their heads, they recalled that Interceptors have had problems with spark plug caps breaking down. £5.79 later on plus £200 labour it’s all fixed. Carry a spare plug cap guys.
