I made my own replacement spring with some spring wire I bought at the hardware store. My velocities initially went from the factory lower-200s, up to 400 FPS. It took maybe a month of shooting and my velocities lowered back down to about a steady 380 FPS. I guess my DIY replacement main spring had settled in or something like that. Unfortunately, I also had to fabricate a new cocking lever out of stronger metal cause the factory cocking handle was wearing out at the tip where it engaged the spring holder's cocking flat.

Thank you for this video. I purchased and installed the new spring and air tube. Enjoyed the extra power but was very upset with accuracy. Watched a video about the "artillery hold" for spring powered air guns and my accuracy now is great. These spring guns have a lot of kick and if you don't hold your spring powered air rifle correctly your shots will be all over the target.

Great video Blue Hill. I did the same swap on my No.111 Model 40 using the Cobalt327 spring & tube and got near the same results. A great improvement. Except.... doing a one handed spring change is a little out of my league. Ha Ha.... :-)

Nice work! Congrats on getting your PPS (Personal Porch Shooter) Model 1938 Red Ryder into Super Thumperland! I can only speak for myself but I love that industrial North Eastern Accent. Pure USA! I also admit that I've never shot a full adult beverage can before and winced when I saw it. Just a great video, if there's anything I can help with just let me know.

Thanks for the compliment on your latest vid, I must say I will be rigging a caulking gun and fender washer for spring compressing. Cobalt sent me a nice comment too. Gonna tackle an old number 50 golden eagle at some point she's in bad shape but I'm gonna try to at least make it look good.

This is the setup Daisy should have used from the factory. This is roughly a 30 percent increase in velocity.

Best not to dry fire BB guns. The air building up behind the BB cushions the impact on the seals and mechanical parts.

BOOYAH! Now if someone would build a hot one from the ground up.

I just did both of these mods and it's way more powerful but accurate at all. I was thinking of removing just the stiffer spring or the air tube. Has anyone tried just doing one of these.

How is the accuracy within 15 yards? I mostly shoot in the 10-15 yard range in my backyard.
@trevorjameson3213 Жыл бұрын
I don't know about him, but I installed the same mods in my Red Ryder and it shoots great at 15 yards. Accuracy remains about the same as stock, which is still good because I can hit a 2" steel fence post at 15 yards almost every time with it. Makes a nice "ping" noise! But yes at 15 yards it's perfectly accurate for shooting cans or bottles. At ten yards on paper targets you should able to get about a 1-1/2 to 2" grouping. Not bad for a BB gun, but it's well known the Red Ryder has good accuracy for what it is.

Look on eBay for user ‘Cobalt 327’ - he also has several KZbin videos. If you’re upgrading a used Ryder I recommend getting the upgraded fiber optic sight and a new lever (yours is probably worn). If you’re away from home and don’t have a workshop, buy 1/8” rod and file some divots to push the spring back. Space 3/8” apart and secure them in a block of wood or your original Daisy wooden sleeve (can clean that up later).

Your best bet is to just get a Daisy 880 if you want to be able to punch through both sides of a steel soup can. Either that or a Crosman 760 or Crosman 2100. All of those have plenty of power for just about anything you want to shoot at.

Daisy parts and Daisy BB guns other than the Red Ryder and Model 25 seem to be difficult to get hold of in the UK, it's a bit annoying. I'd like to be able to get the 499 target version and order parts for the Ryder like a large loop lever etc
