The great thing about the new cobra single length and pro sets is you can mix them if you don't want your short irons longer or your long irons shorter.They can easily be mixed to your preference. I ordered the 4,5 and 6 in the one length version and the 7 through PW in the variable length (pro) version. This can also be done with the cast versions.

Nice review overall, Rick, but like with all of your one-length videos, your analysis doesn't align with your data. Your principal concern here is that the one-length 5-iron's trajectory was intolerably low, yet the data show it was just two yards lower with two yards more rollout. That seems a small price to pay for greater consistency. This might present a more significant problem when you get to the 4-iron, but most people would just move to hybrids or fairways at that point. Same at the lower end. If the GW gets too high and spinny, just stop with PW and use your normal higher-lofted wedges.The one-length concept does not have to be all or nothing in order to be a valid and useful step forward.

Rick, I would like to see a comparison between the two sets of clubs comparing distance from centerline. The reason to use single length clubs is to score better and the only thing that really matters is how close the ball ends up to the target. So maybe some random clubs to random targets using the single length clubs.

I know I want to get a set of these for the reason of simplifying my golf swing with a 4,5,6 iron. Because I'm a mid handicap I struggle mostly with my longer irons in being consistent with my direction of target, because I push so much when the club gets longer. Giving up distance of a few yards is better than being off target 20 yards is my thoughts on it.

I own a set of Sterling Irons by Tom Wishon. These clubs completely accomplish the reason I bought them for! That is they give a great amount of confidence no matter what iron I pull from my bag. The ball is in the same address positon, the stance is the same, the swing plane is the same, and I know I'm making the same swing with my 5 iron as I am with my wedge! I'm not a good enough golfer to worry about whether my 5 iron is holding the green, but CONFIDENCE is what these irons are about! I would also like to see you do a video with the Sterling Irons. I assume the Cobra one length irons were fitted to your swing, i.e. shaft flex, lie angle, etc.?

Great video Rick! Just wondering what is the impact of shorter length in 3,4,5 and 6 irons of one length design on shaping the shoots. Do you experience any difficulty say making fade/draw with the lower number irons?

One thing you never seem to mention is the dynamic loft; I believe that is causing the largest differences!! Also the swing weight of the two 7 irons are different D2.5 1L vs D3 SL

How do you think the gap wedge and pitching wedge of the single length set would feel for chip shots and short pitches? Or do you think you would not use them for that at all and just use specialty wedges for those?
@snivideo8 жыл бұрын
Love the video sir. The point about the longer irons producing lower trajectory thereby not being able to attack the green with them is probably psychological than practical because your results showed that the single-length 5 iron's total yardage was 2 yards shorter than the standard 5 iron. Therefore, I would say one can attack the green and not think about the trajectory as much. Do you agree?
@paulg70025 жыл бұрын
Nice review and explanation. It makes me think that the only model that works in one length is the F Max One Length because the shafts are lighter to increase clubhead speed in a 5 iron and the lofts are not so strong, so the amount of loss in height is reduced. Does this make sense? Currently I have standard length irons with 72 gram shafts and I am thinking about the F. Max One length with the 60 gram shafts because I don't naturally draw the ball.

The numbers are very interesting. The one bit of information that I would have like to have seen an accuracy test. Exactly how tight did each shot end up as it relates to the target. To me speed, distance, ball speed, club speed... is all secondary. The weekend golfer will be looking at this technology to help him with consistency.

I play SL irons, and the low ball-flight of the 5 or 6 iron is my one complaint (accuracy, however, is outstanding). You've nailed the reason: the "5" iron really is, basically, a gripped down, delofted 7 iron. Well said.

Great stuff, Rick! I am still very interested in the single length irons, but am now wondering if the regular F7 (non-forged version) might be a better way to go. I am a low handicap, 4 here in the U.S., but, based on your test, I am worried about my ability to launch long irons in the forged set so they stop on the green. Maybe the more "Game improvement" set will address the issue or can be used as a combo set with the forged irons. The concept still makes sense, but I think there are more variables to consider than it initially seemed.

Just got my one length set over the weekend and I will never go back to a standard set ever again. This is all personal, but for me having the simplicity of being able to have one setup and one swing makes golf so much easier and consistent. Golf for me is already hard enough and having a one length set just take some of those variables away. I will sacrifice three yards for consistency any day. Again this works for me. But I would encourage anyone to give it a try. It is weird at first but after a little while you will use to it.

I would be curious to see the data with different flexes and shaft bend points across the set. For example: Senior flex low bend point in the 4-5-6. Regular flex mid bend point in the 6-7-8. Stiff high bend point in the 9-PW-GW

@qc16517 жыл бұрын
As a armature player who only gets out once a month or so I like the idea of only have to master one swing and still get a good round of golf in. To many times I am trying to change the swing because the clubs are long, 4-5 iron, and the PW and SW are super short. My preferred club is the 6 and 8 iron. I feel the most comfortable. So to get my swing no matter the club to be that of my best irons sounds like a good thing to me.

Hi, I think it is just intuition, but I feel that the consistency numbers are better with the one length, aren't they ? Also, I guess that one length clubs provides a better distance contrôle with higher number clubs (previously known as shorter clubs), so, with more spin and more consistency, we should have a great recipe for scoring, shouldn't we ? It would be very interesting to get the trackman combine comparison between these 2 sets of clubs. Could you make a video of it ? I'm sure the result would be in favor of one length set. However, you pointed out a very interesting fact : low flight with longer clubs which can be a problem for the pros, but not for amateurs... best regards Greg

To be fair you should compare 1irongolf single length irons and the Wishon Irons. This is only one set and they goofed on the specs just like the Tommy Armour E.Q.L. Your results are not typical. The cut off point for most players is the 5 iron , so I can see that may be an issue at least with Cobras. Safe trip and great play in the Turkish Open.
@rayjd16508 жыл бұрын
I feel like a combo set would be interesting. I wonder if something like 7-PW one length and the longer irons being standard increments would work. That way you get the distance and launch that a standard long iron would give you instead of what you see with the one length 5 iron testing, but you get the extra high launch of the shorter irons to really hold greens.

Hope you read this Rick, but during this vid you stated the one length 5 iron was much lower than a standard club. However on the graph you showed they looked fairly close to being the same height. What was the actual height for the one length and standard. Thanks, very interesting review eh!

I really enjoy Rick's reviews, but I have to point out his bias on this. He's skeptical of one length, which is okay, but he tries to manipulate results to prove his preconceptions. For example, did anyone notice that he didn't actually talk about the peak height differences for the 5 iron? All he said was that the single length 5 iron was much lower. However, if you stop the video at 11:52, you can see that they were only 2 yards apart - 31 and 29.

- I've had 6 months or so with SLI. They are a cheaper (Pinhawk - Nordica Golf£350) cast club as an experiment so do have a different feel than the forged clubs i've used for 15 years or more. Thought hey feel slightly different the distances are pretty much the same. I think they work OK - will they take over the world - i'm not sure. I do think the 5 and 6 iron are easier to use than standard clubs because they are shorter with heavier head. However, i have found the longer pitching wedge more difficult than expected particularly oon half and 3/4 manufactured shots. Would i pay £650 for a new set of forged irons - probably not - but that is as much for the fact i only play once a week now. If i was starting out again would i - probably yes - i think they would be easier for new starters
@jasonwarlond67438 жыл бұрын
Numbers show surprisingly similar distances across the clubs which means job well done to Cobra, albeit with different trajectories. The question then is do they provide more consistency of strike? It would be interesting to see a similar test with different handicap levels where irons are selected at random to see if different handicap levels get more consistency out of the single lengths .... and consistency might even vary from club to club (ie. above the 7 iron or below).

Rick, after watching you test clubs for the last 3 years I feel you consistently hit from the inside with a slightly closed face. Your misses are to the left more often than not. The longer the club the more the dispersion. I would have to think that these same length clubs of 7 iron length would improve your dispersion, allow you to hit the sweet spot more often, and be more consistent. Just a thought, but I am sold on this concept.

Excellent stuff, but isn't the main aim for single length clubs to minimise variation in strike, the holy grail for any golfer? One length, one plane, one delivery. Not so important for single handicappers and better but for hackers (I include myself) and newbies it simplifies the idea of the swing.
