Definitely! I was astonished by his acting in Kobra Kai. He IS the show IMO. Not to take away from anyone else but Johnny is who I care about the most in the show. Johnny deserves an incredible ending, (to the show) so that we the viewers can have a sense of "knowing" that he'll be successful after the final credits roll.

I happened to meet him when I worked the door at a comedy club in LA in the early 2000s and I can tell you that he's SUPER cool and down-to-earth in real life. Everyone was excited that he came to the show, and he stopped and talked to every single comic and audience member who approached him. As an OG Karate Kid fan who saw the original in the theater as a kid, I couldn't be happier that the show is a hit and that his performance is getting him the recognition he deserves.

When the first Karate Kid came out, everyone knew Pat Morita as "Al" from the "Happy Days" series. The fact that his performance as Mr. Miyagi made everyone "forget" is a testimony to his skill as an actor.

I was a kid and could pick out the fonzz from a lineup, and probably could sing most of the show's theme song, but I didn't recognize pat/mr miyagi from anything prior to the first karate kid film. But you're correct about the phenomenal performance. When I was an older teen/early 20s and saw interviews, it was shocking.

@@bantheshift Yes, it may seem that way since actors tend to like playing diverse characters and be in new projects. And there could be other reasons like being too old to have fight scenes, especially for Ralph who is not into martial arts unlike William. And that is why Harrison Ford never liked playing Han Solo (but not Indy) because he was so over his character and wanted out. I think if the producers want to continue with the series and some of the original actors want out, they need to start making a script for it so that those actors can exit gracefully and their characters may even die or paralyzed so that they can't teach martial arts anymore.

Cobra Kai is the most brilliant and well done show on Netflix. My favorite thing is that when my children were younger, I showed them some of my favorite 80s flicks, the Karate Kid series being one of them. And now I sit on the couch with my 24 year old daughter, who is as excited to watch the next episode as I am, and completely understands all the old references.

Sometimes I imagine Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith being in cobra kai but I don't see a valid reason for them being in the show but Hilary Swank would be an exception because her character knew Mr. Miyagi because she was trained by him. So it would make sense for her to make an appearance. At this point, with Terry Silver being in the show I'm half expecting Mike Barnes to be in it as well.

The show just keeps going from strength to strength, bringing back so many great characters, expanding on their past and why they did what they did gives a much deeper and thorough understanding of their motives. I'm really enjoying how they've gradually turned the show into a full ensemble cast too, focusing on Daniel and Johnny was a great way to start, but continuously building on the roles of the younger characters, like Hawk/Eli, was a great move and really helps drive the show forward. I can't wait to see where they take the show next.

Cobra Kai is a perfect homage to Karate Kid. It has the right balance of humour and 80’s references. The fact that it no longer just revolves around Daniel, is a superb touch, because Johnny being stuck in the past, makes it incredibly funny. As someone who was born in 1980, I really appreciate the references to the original. I can’t wait to see more of season 4, which I’ve just started. I’m also really trying not to binge this new season too, which isn’t easy. As a side note, I do really miss Pat Morita. It’s not quite the same without him.

The writers of this show are absolutely amazing and gifted with the amount of detail of keeping the show new but inputting pieces from the original movies. This buy far is the only series I look forward to binge watching everytime. I wish the seasons had more episodes and can’t wait for another season. I am waiting for Hilary to join the team. This is one of the few shows that feels very consistent. Not once have I ever felt I was watching a completely different show whether it be tone inconsistence, character motivation exc. It always remains focused and the writing is just so well done. Easily one of the best shows to stream rn and has quickly become one of my favorite shows I have ever seen. Especially in this latest season where they both hang out and sort of try to teach the other their philosophy lol. It's really the anchor for the show and it's working brilliantly.

One way to include Hillary Swank is possibly having her be a positive role model/Mentor for Tory, who deals with breaktaking anger issues similar to hers when she was younger. It could possibly be Tory's chance at redemption, and possible defection from cobra kai, since she's not a completely bad person, but really just needs the right kind of guidance from a person who's had similar struggles but had someone like Mr. Miyagi to guide them.

Jackie Chan also has great comedic timing, from the different fight scenes he's done in the past including Cannonball Run and the Rush Hour series he's definitely someone who could advise with that aspect even if he's not on screen.

I think that one way it could be done would be for Jackie to show a fight choreography of his making to the Karate experts advising or the movie in the Kung Fu style, and they could translate the moves in the Karate equivalents of the Kung Fu moves teaching the result to the series cast. People who do dance do something similar, for example, there are adaptations of Salsa Rueda for Lindy Hop or West Coast Swing Dancers. The result would be something of a Karate fight that would be an homage to Mr Han who was the remake's Mr Myagi without having him on screen in the series since he's from outside the Myagiverse.

They could be easily integrated without having to have met Mr. Miyagi though. Remember that Miyagi-do was founded in China first. Jackie and Jaden's characters could wind up watching the tournament or help Danny and Johnny in a fight, leading to Daniel learning more about the origins of Miyagi-do.

To be fair that’s how people will always feel by default when it comes to originals and remakes. While I prefer the original myself, I would t go as far as to say that it is so much better than the more modern one. We already saw an enemy team up (daniel-johnny), we already saw the weak pathetic kid joining karate and becoming a badass, we already saw the bullied kid becoming a morally corrupt. I don't know what else they could do unless they really jump the shark and start doing international stuff. Same happened with the movies, they became more and more outlandish as they went on. I really liked Cobra Kai, is a nostalgia trip, but the nostalgia well has dried up already and it shows in a lot of plot points in season 4.

I love how softly Ralph confirmed that Mr. Miyagi is basically the God(or God-like) figure of this franchise through the canonical structuring. They way He's written into it makes Him feel so omnipresent, that it's hard to find any other way to describe Him. That just adds such a tender layer of magic to the whole thing!

Karate Kid ("original") and now Cobra Kai inspire - they come from a unique time and place and are in an entirely different emotional universe from the remake with Smith and Chan (a different vision unique in their own right). To add these characters to this series would be like playing the wrong note in a harmonic triad chord...it would not work.

I truly cannot express how wonderfully well William Zabka and Ralph Macchio perform in this series. It's so well written, and the acting is just superb. Even the younger cast is fabulous. Binged watched season 4 last night and already can't wait for season 5. Keep it going! Would love to see Hilary Swank reprise her role and Mike Barnes return as well.

This is a geniously written continuation. Although I think it only works because the cast is the same. Anyway, I hope they keep the seasons coming. The actors are such an integral part. At one point Johnny is asked for old photos of his and he brings out some polaroid photos - they weren't photoshoped, you can actually see "Zabka" written on one of the them.

I feel like bringing in jaden or jackie (or both) would be a big hit. Yes that movie wasnt at all about karate (it was about kung fu) but I dont think the show can survive with just the constant miyagi-do vs cobra kai angle for another season or two. Dont get me wrong, I love the show, but like 5 seasons deep and it's still mainly Cobra vs Miyagi do. By bringing in kung fu adds a new dynamic and could be a fight style that Sam or Miguel learn to bring down cobra kai, or a new rival to the fight dynamic could have a kung fu background. Idk i think it'd be a wasted opportunity to not explore that option

Chan would never do a TV show. There's an unwritten rule that movie starts don't do TV because its a step down. That may have changed in the last 5 or 6 years in Hollywood, but Chan isn't in Hollywood...he's primarily Asiawood (yes, made up that term because each Asian country has a name for their film industry to name) star. That's where his main fan base is located at and they are more fickle and slower to change.

Perhaps, for now, Mr.Han is a character from another universe. But may be later, when they will run out of ideas, they would probably try to invite Jacki Chan. The main problem, I guess, is that he is VERY busy person, and even if he liked the idea to take part in this series, he may not had time for this.

I know the 4th one didn't do as well as the others, but it would be cool to see Daniel and Hilary's character meet and talk about how Mr. Miyagi affected their lives. Like the scene could be where Hillary walks in looking to buy a vehicle and Daniel has a picture of Mr. Miyagi up and Hillary notices it and starts asking Daniel where is Mr. Miyagi and Daniel to his amaze looks at her. Like you knew him too! And then they swap stories. You know something like that would be a way to squeeze her in.
