Shawn said himself they had open shots and wouldn’t take it. They both were ranked Top 4, doing better than even Eli did in the tag game. Johnny and Daniel both put Sam in their top 4, Johnny who specifically only ranks fighters based on fighting ability which included Kenny. Even Shawn said he had scrap. But it wasn’t enough to get past them. Silver and Kim also said Tory was their best student in Season 5. Including Kenny.

You can tell that they’ve raised the stakes and had a darker tone. I personally think it’s good but because we’re so used to it all being about external threats, we aren’t used to our characters fighting from within. The fault is in the Sekkai Taikai, after Silver got arrested it was no more about beating the evil, it became for personal benefits of winning it. To say the least there’s a Miyagi seems to not like tournaments.
