Great info! I’m researching and learning a lot about Coccidia. I rescued a kitten from my yard and he has it. It’s so stressful. He’s the sweetest, snuggliest baby but he’s not eating or drinking enough. 48 hours of Vomit, Diarrhea and no food or water....I took him to the vet and he had 2 Coccidia and a roundworm. This is going to be another long 10 days of quarantine from my house cat. I bit off more than I can chew. I have an adopter, but I’m sure she wants a healthy kitten that won’t infect her cat. Ugh

Melanie Hale he did great! By day 4-5 he got his energy back and eating/drinking/playing normally again. On day 10 he finished his medication and had another fecal. It was all clear, he was free from quarantine and went onto his next adventure in his forever home. He’s a good boy, his only weakness is houseplants lol. It all worked out for this lucky boy, although I saw first hand how dangerous Coccidia can be without treatment. I’m glad I acted fast and rushed him to the vet when I did. It saved his life.

Melanie Hale painful!? Oh no! I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with metrodiazonale. Have you discussed other treatment options with your vet? It shouldn’t be painful! I once had a dog with scratched cornea and I was given an ointment for her eye. It really was painful for some reason...after a few days, I asked the vet if it’s supposed to sting like it was? He said NO and he immediately prescribed something else that helped heal her eye.

@@kathrynhuckelby6796 Paracur (Fenbenizole) works on Coccidia. Requires more than 3 days though. I use 7-10 days. I measure the powder precisely with a scale for very small amounts based on the cats weight. It works well. It is sold for dogs in packets but my vet has given it off label to cats. I measure it more precisely than the vet does. Don't like to use too much.

Thank you for watching the video. Coccidia is very contagious. It is always best to keep the home environment clean and sanitize your hands and any soil in your yard if your dog shows signs coccidia. Always best to check with your own veterinarian. Here is more information about coccidia in pets from www.petcoach.co/article/coccidia-coccidiosis-a-cause-of-diarrhea/ As a puppy ages, he tends to develop a natural immunity to the effects of coccidia. As an adult, he may carry coccidia in his intestines, and shed the cyst in the feces, but experience no ill effects.Any infected puppy or kitten is contagious to other puppies or kittens. It is wise to isolate those infected from those that are not. Because coccidia is spread by the feces of carrier animals, it is very important to practice strict sanitation. All fecal material should be removed. Housing needs to be such that food and water cannot become contaminated with feces. Clean water should be provided at all times. Most disinfectants do not work well against coccidia; incineration of the feces, and steam cleaning, immersion in boiling water, or a 10% ammonia solution are the best methods to kill coccidia. Coccidia can withstand freezing. The incubation period is about 18 days. The coccidia species of dogs and cats do not usually infect humans, although less common forms of the parasite can potentially infect humans.

Does ammonia based cleaners help kill coccidia in the environment?
@MaddiesFundEducation3 жыл бұрын
Here is what we found on a google search: The most important part of the cleaning process is the use of sufficient water to wash away most of the oocysts. Common disinfectants have little or no effect on oocysts. Ammonium Hydroxide has been reported as a highly effective disinfectant against oocysts.

Will scrubbing cages with bleach help?
@MaddiesFundEducation8 жыл бұрын
As Dr. Boes suggests, coccidia is best killed by high temperature steam heat - i.e in a commercial dishwasher. Others have recommended first degreasing by scrubbing with with Dawn dishwashing liquid, let it sit for a few minutes, and then using a product called Virkon and let that sit for 10 minutes and then rinse well. Here is an article that you can check out with good information about shelter cleaning that makes reference to coccidia: members.petfinder.com/~MA199/resourcePages/volunteers/shelterCleaning.pdf
