'Cock up or conspiracy?' | What's going on with that Kate Middleton photo?

Amid speculation that a picture of Kate Middleton and her children has been 'manipulated', Tom Swarbrick speaks to a royal correspondent, a technology expert and a PR advisor, to get their thoughts.
The photo, posted on Mother's Day, was the first of the Princess of Wales to be released since her surgery in January.
However, Getty Images, Reuters and Associated Press are among those to have pulled the photo, citing an 'inconsistency' with the alignment of Princess Charlotte's left hand.
So far, Kensington Palace are yet to comment.

Well, I'd have posted it. I'm an editor, off at the weekend - if I'd seen that sent in, filling one small part of the screen window, downloaded from PA or whoever, I wouldn't have seen the hand error, at a few pixels high on my screen. In a shocking twist, you don't pore over every single image you're sent, when you've a hundred things to get through. Most newsrooms would have seen the pic, and 5 seconds or less later, would have been clicking away from it for the embedded file caption and copyright credit - not zoomed in at 1:1 per-pixel scale, where you'd probably at that stage have seen the error. Hardly a mystery, or a conspiracy.

I hate to have to chip in because I usually try to keep my exposure to the 'royal' family and conspiracy theories to a minimum but I am a photographer, so might have something to contribute - This type of ghosting artifact might have happened as a result of automatic compositing done by the device used to take the shot (movement between the shots can cause this). More likely though is that someone was just trying to get a shot with everyone looking in the right direction with normal lookings poses (hands & feet looking weird can often throw a photo off) and just did a bit of a rush job. This kind of touching up happens all the time, especially with portraits, wedding shots and the like. They very likely did it as a matter of course without thinking twice and have managed to create a news story out of it.

Judging by artifical green of the grass in the foreground and the frosty grass in the background, not to mention the browning deciduous plant on the wall, this photo is months old. And that's the least disturbing thing about it. Who even goes around with their ring and middle fingers crossed? It's awkward, painful and uncomfortable and unlikely three kids would achieve such a pose while laughing in a relaxed manner.

I have a great deal of experience with generating AI images and I know what to look out for to determine if an image is a true photo or one generated by AI. There are several details in that "photo" which reveal that it is entirely an AI-generated image. The major and most frequent flaw of AI-generated images of people is in hands and especially fingers. Note that in that "photo" of Kate and her children, prince Louis' right hand fingers are quite distorted and unnatural. Also, how many people do you know whose little fingers dare longer than their index fingers? In that "photo", Kate's left hand shows a slightly longer little finger than her index finger. There are other details but I won't go into them, the ones I have outlined above are amply sufficient to demonstrate that this "photo" is an AI-generated picture.

Catherine is an amateur photographer. She has admitted to editing the photo, which is normal for most of us amateur photographers. No it is not going to overshadow anything. I can’t wear my rings now because I have lost weight and they fall off and I have not had re-sized! Geez!!!
