Hi, my bird currently has an upper respiratory infection and they did prescribe medication but said a flush might be needed. They said they should sedate the bird during the flush, but apparently it’s very dangerous for small birds to be sedated. What now? :(

The sinus flush procedure in birds is easy and not traumatic when done by a bird Vet - the worst affected birds have their sinus flushed every 2 weeks at bird vet Melbourne. A cockatiel sinus flush should be done as often as needed - or when the bird's nostril becomes blocked or partly blocked.

Is seems similar to the one I used to medicate my cockatiel. In my country it was sold as a diabetes syringe, but you would ask to have the version without the needle.

Hi The vets at the Melbourne Bird Vet used a 3 ml syringe and a 25 gauge needle - with the needle tip removed or broken off - and the end smoothed. The parrot veterinarian used warm sterile saline to flush the birds sinuses - sinus flush.
