"Cockpit Country Is Our Home"
A 28 minute educational video about the biota of Cockpit Country, the interior western region of Jamaica. Through breathtaking, intimate footage you get to experience Cockpit Country's environment and the animals found there. The video explains the interconnected ecology of Cockpit Country, the role of trees and plants such as Bromeliads, and features Jamaican bats; the Jamaican Slider Turtle; the Jamaican Laughing Frog; the Jamaican Yellow Boa; a variety of birds including Doves, Pigeons, Yellow and Black-billed Parrots, Olive-throated Parakeets, Hummingbirds, the Jamaican Tody, and the Jamaican Woodpecker; Snails; and Anancy, the Golden Spider.
Made especially for a Jamaican audience, it is narrated by residents of Cockpit Country who represent a cross-section of ages, and features the on camera talent of Lorna Williams Christie, Susan Koenig, and Wayne Francis.
Funded through a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Produced by Esther Figueroa, Vagabond Video, for Windsor Research Centre. I agree .. we should protect and preserve the cockpit country even if we have to use our bodies as a group of protesters and stop them... I think the artists and organizers in Jamaica should perform a free concert to get more attention on this situation and to get the word out for a peaceful protest or several protests until they listen to us and stop the foolery.

Forests are threatened all over the world - In Canada they want to cut them down to build houses and in other places they want to cut timber or mine them. The only way to protect rain forests is to make them profitable - people see them as waste lands that can be developed so the threat will always be there. We can make them profitable by making them tourist friendly - Lots of tourist all over the world are interested in forests because they were born in concrete jungles. For is like heaven to them so they will pay big bucks to tour them. While coming from Jamaica in November I happened to sit by a gentleman who told me that he paid US$200 for he and his wife to go on a bird watching tour. Many people don't know that people are willing to pay that kind of money that's why they see the forests as bush. It begins with education and videos like this is a great start

An emphatic NO to bauxite minings. It would be a disaster for the area to end up like my home village in St Ann. It is a barren wasteland. Polluted and toxic. The workers are exploited. When they want on strike for better pay and conditions and government and the mining companies broke the strike by bringing in workers. The strikers were sacked. From then on permanent employment stopped. To keep workers in slave conditions and drive down wages even further workers are rotated every 2 days if you complain you simply do not get hired, I think that extractive industries are unconscionable and racist. Their nefarious actions affect all communities in the same way. In the village where I was born in Jamaica, the government and mining company talked villagers into selling their land and homes. They were given promises of a new village elsewhere with improved facilities, better houses than the ones they had before and good land so they could continue farming. The villagers sold and nothing happened for more than a decade. By the time the mining companies showed up, the money villages got for their property was long gone. Those who refused to sell; their land and property were compulsorily purchased. The new house and land turned out to be less than promised. The land was poor and stony so nothing could grow there. To survive, the farmers were forced to work in England and the USA. The villagers were simple farmers, they did know what mining meant. They did not know that they had signed away their future and the future of the land and all its inhabitants. All extractive industries behave in the same way. They exploit local workers. They abuse local communities and they abuse, rape and poison the environment. They don't care about the effect their activities have on local communities. Their responsibilities begin and end with the bottom line - shareholders. They don't have to live with the consequences of deforestation, loss of biodiversity, the poisoning of land, water and air.

Eat the snakes. All of them. That's what they're there for. They taste just like chicken. Put some jerk rub on them. Yum. 👮
