@katdavis5308 жыл бұрын
ZenZaBill, i love 50s B-grade sci-fi. I have quite the collection. I enjoy trying to figure out what everyday items have been used in prop design and spotting fishing line. Kind of sad I suppose, but I think it reminds us that sometimes imagination is better than special effects. I think we've lost that these days with big budget films where different worlds are handed to us on a platter. Perhaps that is why I am enjoying shorts.

The more SCI FI shorts I watch. The more I think; ''Why are these not being funded into full length movies!?'' I feel we've been repeatedly let down by Hollywood on the sci fi genre. Yes they may look good but their story lines leave much to be desired (Jupiter ascending springs to mind).

Hollywood doesn't offer what we want. Hollywood only offers blockbuster movies that the masses will mindlessly attend.
@stubhead7 жыл бұрын
"The masses" don't get a whole lot to say in the matter. And the masses are people we need to help us keep our world together. I've been off the TV tit for a decade, and I've even infected several of the ex-masses... Time and again, Hollywood sends out some really expensive, really decaying dogshit horror of a movie. One thing I've NEVER heard: Someone compaining that movies aren't dumb enough yet. Here's your first assignment -: get your shotgun, locate a single glob of the masses,(self-contained within a single bag of skin is one way to tell). And give them a big hug - then blow the focking shit outta their TV and run like hell. Upon sucessful execution,,we'll find some really juicy stuff for you so keep checking back for further orders..

IMO this is the absolute best sci-fi short I've seen--ever. Seems to me everybody's a critic on what really are trivial & insignificant aspects of film making. I don't think Jesse Griffiths had buckets of money or cutting edge technology to draw on. I've watched this dozens of times over the years & have never become bored with it. This is a film you should watch a few times to see things going on in the background you don't see the first or second time. Great work Jesse!

Best units against that kind of aliens - remote drones!
@griffithpictures8 жыл бұрын
Probably... Drones kind of ruin cinema. I think the feature deals with that... they Tarceds can take over our drones and turn them against us. But in reality, a self destruct with a drone is more effective than a pilot ejecting and self destructing. I suppose the Tarceds can take over an unmanned craft quicker than one controlled by a willful human who's willing to eject.

One of the keys of good science fiction is the writing having a good foundation in science. Holding the enemy at bay at the edge of the galaxy seems a bit out of kilter, if you know how large our galaxy really is. At the edge of the Solar system would make sense. But 90 years in the future we go from crawling in 1 star system to thriving in several hundred million? Not likely.
@jeffreyraia58049 жыл бұрын
I agree. Space battles on the "edge of the Galaxy" did take away from the science aspect of the film.
@griffithpictures9 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Raia It was intended to be a colorful way of saying something like "at the ends of the Earth..." but in outer space. Edge of the Solar System didn't sound great... but I'll reconsider that for the feature.

congratulations, Jessie. What you have achieved here on this budget both artistically and especially technically is pretty jaw dropping - every success to you and the team with the project. I would LOVE to hear how much practical set you had in relation to the greenscreen and how the 3d compositing was handled,especially in that very ambitious track around the bridge from monitors to the captain with other activity in the foreground and background as dialogue is delivered. Tasty work!

BRAVO!! BRAVO! 170 dislikes is not an insult. It just proves that no matter what you think of this art in motion -it's WORTH a look. I've watched it 3x in one sitting. With what was available just 5 years ago, making this was no easy feat and I can appreciate and respect the labor involved. In terms of screenplay and editing, this is called a SHORT -but believe me: IT'S ALL THERE. The whole ride. Press play and enjoy, but afterwards: imagine what's coming (my guess) in 2016 from a crew & story that HOLLYWOOD should've greenlit years ago. CHEERS!

LOL... OK, here ya go: The Tarcids are in fact NOT the enemy. They are psychihc or telepathic (which ever term you prefer), but the one we see moving toward the ship at the end of the cip is infact a peace emmisary searching out the captain of this particular ship because of certain genetic traits that he posesses. This emmisary is here to bring the message that the war the humans are fighting is not a war of their own creation, but rather a war started by Tarcid criminals who have escaped the juristictions of thier society. They have already infiltrated Earth and are trying to psychicly manipulate humans into fighting their war for them. The emmissary tells the captain that, as a powerful psychic species, they have no need for war. Why would you need to make war when you can edit your very presence out of the minds of those "lesser" creatures around you? Tarcids can pass completely undeteced so why would they ever need to fight? But as a psychic species they also have laws against manipulating "lesser" species, especially for any kind of profit or personal advancement movite. The criminals, having excaped and made their way to Earth, have already taken over the governments of the world and have used their psychic tallents to convince all humanity that they are in mortal danger from the Tarcids, when in fact the Tarcids are only trying to help save Earth and its people from manipulative Tarcid criminals. The XO is one of those criminals, placed specifically on this ship to prevent emmissaies from countering their psychic manipulations. The captain has latent psychic genes that, when properly stimulated, could give him the ability to "see" past the telepathic lies and perhaps even shield his innermost thought away from Tarcid detection, but the emmissary has to get to him and help him to "see" the truth before its too late. The XO begins hunting the emmissary, but only after the meeting between the captain and the emmissary has begun. Then it becomes a psychic game of hide and seek between the emmissary and the criminals on board. Put that in your peace pipe and puff, puff, pass...

Here's where your story falls apart: If the humans are so easily influenced, that a handful of evil aliens can effectively conquer Earth, then we would be THE ABSOLUTE WORST pawns to use in a war. If billions of humans were completely defenseless against a few evil aliens, how well do you think those evil aliens believe we'd fair against billions of good aliens? That's like one adult beating up a group of toddlers and then expecting those toddlers to go beat up a group of adults. If they're so enlightened that they no longer have need for war then why is there a criminal element? The only reason we humans have cops and militaries is because we have bad guys. If we were enlightened beyond war and crime we wouldn't need cops or militaries, so you're premise is flawed.

The XO does not outrank the Captain. More like the pilot saying, "Golly Captain, your XO gave an order 8 minutes ago so I'm going to just ignore that you were talking with that pilot." This sort of is the debate between Denzel and Hackman in Crimson Tide if you think about it.
@misteryman5268 жыл бұрын
How does talking to the pilot have anything to do with it? The Captain never said "Hold your fire" as far as I remember, so his conversation with the comprimised pilot has no bearing on the order given by the XO

Okay why not use cybernetic forces? If you deal with an enemy that can control your mind, why not just send in cybernetic drones with observational equipment for a pilot to fight from long distance(you would be out psionic range most likely). Or clones designed to die after combat, and their ships come back. Why not genetically engineer soldiers to be able to defend against that kind of mind control. Instead they just send pilots on ahead to fight an enemy like that...
@griffithpictures8 жыл бұрын
A common comment, so I'll address that in the feature. But the short of it is the aliens can hack remote controlled vehicles easier than they can control minds.
@griffithpictures8 жыл бұрын
And that's the main truth of it. But I'll need to answer that question if I'm doing a feature.
@fangadorawolfen61648 жыл бұрын
See, the thing is What about genetic engineering. Creating soldiers who are immune to the effect, or even clones with no intent to survive, after every mission mine wipe, or euthanasia.
@yui9077 жыл бұрын
Fangadora Wolfen This would make for good watching, as the next generation of pilots, hinted at and then taking the stage in the sequel!
@MichaelSephiroth6 жыл бұрын
Well, Im not sure how that would work, if you have a brain you can get brainhacked its like making a PC with an internet connection that cant be hacked lol If its something more limited and simple than a brain to avoid "survival instincts" or even "common sense" n just do the programmed orders, thats just even easier to hack, same as the remote drones. Too bad it looks like not even tinfoil hats work here as its not just any electric wave, more like telepathy n it has no barriers.

Wow that's great to hear! It's been 6 years since this was uploaded. Have you invested in faster lenses since then? You seem to be using a lot of low key lighting to set the mood of the film. Some fast lenses would help preserve some precious detail during tense scenes. :)

Dale Because thanks Dale... I’ve been making the feature out of pocket and ran a successful indiegogo campaign to cover the last four days of filming. Now it’s just me and post production for the next 12 months. But please spread the word about the feature (it’s titled #Demonstar)

One thing sci-fi movie makers get wrong SO OFTEN is that there is no sound in space and wings mean NOTHING to a fighter in space. In fact, a single seat spacecraft is stupid. An aircraft carrier size spacecraft is just as nimble as a 10 ton fighter.
@griffithpictures11 жыл бұрын
... and drones make more sense anyway. (But wings help in the atmosphere that they entered when they hit their targets). Aircraft carriers are problematic because if they are exposed, they cost of "ejecting" is much higher. All good points. I need to open the feature with a montage of these thoughts and either show how the Tarceds exploit these idea (especially the drone one), or I need to fix it.
@redemption012111 жыл бұрын
Toltrin Smith Well to be fair, there are many pointless things that we humans do all of the time. Wings may be aesthetically pleasing in this future and like Griffith mentioned helping with alien atmosphere. Just like name brand clothes, etc doing meaning "nothing", as you put, with the reason of said article of clothing or some pieces of work, etc that people clamor over.
@nerys716 жыл бұрын
Toltrin Smith this is not even remotely true not even close you might not have weight in space but you do have mass and inertia and a fighter will be significantly more Nimble than a carrier

1862 was arguably the first glimpse into television technology with television technology actually taking off in 1928. So 1928 to present (2013) is 85 years, we now have full HD televisions in our pocket from which we can transmit and receive to many other sources. We've just started booking space travel flights to the rich today, so yeah, who knows what we'll find in 90 years? But to be fair, I wrote the script 3 years ago, so it's actually 93 years for the technology jump to occur.
