As a child in the early 1960s I lived close by when it was RAF Turnhouse, spent many a day at the airport asking pilots to look in the cockpit. Always worked with RAF crews, and sometime with civilian aircraft . The Vanguard, Viscounts and other piston engine aircraft used to fly low over my bedroom making the whole house shake

I lived at Ratho Station opposite. Used to go down to Newbridge Primary and walk to the end of the runway, it was only a couple strands of wire fence - no safety protocols or terrorist issues in the 70s- and watch the comet’s and Trident’s come in and get the jet wash over our heads! All our windows began cracking in Ratho. Putty etc. Remember they bought out the cottages next to the Newbridge primary road, because they were directly over the flight path and all their windows got broken. At 1:11 is where I currently live. Granton Harbour. Cracking shot

Looks like the strip could use some abrasion to get rid of the rubber deposit. US Company, ‘Skidabrader’ are permanently employed on surfaces from civilian and military airfields, to motorway intersections. On airfields they are given a 24 hour shut-down window. Takes a lot of advance planning.

Que pista tan corta!!! Que pasa si de pronto tiene que aterrizar de emergencia un Boeing 777? Los britanicos son tan previsores...que raro...
@lyokoBSTN9 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure a Boeing 777 would land just fine in an emergency on this runway. It can handle a 777 it has proven already. Also evidence to support this is plenty. EDI's main runway 06/24 has a length of 8386ft Now, we look down south. Cardiff airport in Wales has a single runway, and is a length of 7848ft (So shorter than EDI) And yet, Cardiff is where British Airways regularly do their servicing of their aircraft (Including the Boeing 747) If that's not enough on that, you can again go south more to Exeter airport. Exeter has a runway length of 6811ft (Significantly shorter that Edinburgh and Cardiff) and yet still is capable of handling a 747 landing and taking off from it. Also, you must remember that the UK is rather small in comparison to alot of places. If an aircraft gets into trouble it has plenty of options of runway. Unless the situation requires the flight down as soon as possible. I'm sure they can divert and choose a more optimal runway for their aircraft.
@SuperAlaska20119 жыл бұрын
lyokoBSTN De que estas hablando? Si el avion casi llego al final de la pista!! Y cuales serian las pistas opcionales fuera de Londres? Cuantos pies tiene la pista de Heathrow?
@lyokoBSTN9 жыл бұрын
SuperAlaska2011 LHR 09L/24R is 12802ft, while 09R/24L is 12008ft in length. But we're talking an airport that handles a much larger volume of traffic. Now, other airfields with runways above 10000ft include London Gatwick (10879ft) Manchester (10000ft and 10007ft) Birmingham (10013ft) If we were to alter the table though, and say what airfields have runways more than 2000m (6561ft) then we suddenly have alot more fields open for possibilities. Also, to address the whole "Almost reached the end of the runway" thing. The aircraft was ready and able to come to a complete stop halfway down the runway, they carried a little extra speed to get them to the exit taxiway. The camera they are using to record seems to force perspective quite drastically here. they exited off about 3/4 of the way down the runway. But you have a fair chunk of extra distance down past the runway threshold before reaching the next taxiway.
@SuperAlaska20119 жыл бұрын
lyokoBSTN I understand...Wow! you have a lot of information! Where did you take from all these figures? Actually, I didn't like the way they filmed it. May be it's true, I feel a great distortion in the perspective, makes me dizzy. Well...by the way, which is the lenght of the runway in Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv?
@lyokoBSTN9 жыл бұрын
SuperAlaska2011 The video almost looks as if it's on a permanent zoom or somehing like it. As for where I get my information, I just do a little internet digging honestly. Most information you could want on an airfield you can find somewhere. Helps if you wanna go flying. As for your request there. TLV has 3 runways of different lengths 03/21 is shortest at 9094ft 08/26 is the longest at 13327ft but is called the quiet runway. It's primarily used for takeoffs mostly, and the aircraft reduce noise pollution for surrounding residents. 12/30 is the Main runway, and is 10210ft in length. Having recently been closed from 2011 to 2014 to allow for 03/21 to be lengthened from 5840ft to it's current length. This means TLV has 3 runways fully capable of handling most air traffic now.

For those who have never been to Edinburgh, the airport is a considerable distance from the city - about a 30-45 minute ride. I was lucky enough to have friends in Falkirk who put me up for the evening before catching the train into Waverly Station the next morning. After 3 days in the city = Inverness. ScotRail was marvelous. I had an 8-day anytime on/off pass (excepting Peak commuter hours) and loved every moment. Then, a three day car excursion from my friends from Inverness southward back to Falkirk. The two days in Stornoway and the wonderful time in Skye was one of my most favorite times.

+resculptit You haven't travelled much if you think a 30 minute bus ride is "a considerable distance" to a city centre from an airport! (and the bus to Waverley Bridge takes 30 minutes, not 45 minutes.) For most of Europe that would be around the average. And how is travelling to Falkirk (minimum 30-40 minutes by car WEST of Edinburgh Airport) and then travelling by train to Edinburgh the next day (30 minutes minimum) better than simply getting the bus to Edinburgh from the airport??? What a complicated life you lead!!!
