What a wonderful way to close a week with a glass of cocktail in hand and listening to Xavier talking about a painting and the history behind it...

These videos are wonderful. I think that so few people have liked the videos is that they don't want to login to their account. It took me some time to find my login information, but I wanted to compliment you on the quality and content. As a university professor, I recognize the effort that you put into the videos to make them feel as we truly are having a conversation over cocktails. My friend told me about the series and for her, it is the only break that she has all week. Please keep up the videos. There are so many more people who look forward to them even if they don't like them.

I came across this talk today - 2 years later- after seeing the Dieppe picture at the National Gallery in London, where it is now on loan along with the Harbour at Cologne. They are a stunning pair and your presentation really added to my enjoyment. Thank you.

i've loved every one of these videos! it's wonderful to just look at one painting and hear about its history, the history of the artist and the world at the time of the painting's creation. i enjoy museums very much but get distracted with so many things to see. i hope the world opens back up soon! but i also hope that this series will continue, particularly as i live in a small town and only get to visit a museum when we travel once or twice a year. thank you curators, you're very much appreciated!

This is a stunning series and I recommend it for all. Some reservations on History out of context but not many considering the age in which we are living.

Greetings from Scotland and many congratulations on Cocktails with a Curator. I came on Westminster Abbey serendipitously and loved it so much that I watched three in a row. You have the rare gift of being a great communicator while wearing your learning lightly. It is so rewarding to be “ made” to look at a painting for a quarter of an hour. I loved the cocktails and glimpses of your beautiful home too!

Absolutely lovely video. It's worth reflecting, too, on the fact that after 1815 British artists positively flooded into France - Prout, Turner etc. came as if a kind of lockdown had been lifted but (and this is the difference to our own times) without a clear memory of the coast of France to revive. Turner was 18 when the war began, for instance, so this isn't a painting reframing or recalling Dieppe so much as a capturing it for the first time. What British artists revelled in when they visited France was the juxtaposition of the familiar and the different - and this painting has lots of both.

I think it's actually easy to under-appreciate the Frick's two great Turners. They don't have the drama of some popular Turners, and I'm not sure that their placement in the middle of those long walls does them any favors. So it's wonderful to be encouraged to look closely at them. I don't have any Calvados handy but a Widow's Kiss is in my future. Here's to the Frick!

Thank you once again for your well informed presentation of Turner's 'Harbor of Dieppe,' the addition of your personal experiences of travel to Dieppe' helped me better appreciate the work. I must confess I have not been, until now an admirer of Turner's work, having preferred Constable's landscapes, however, I am now reconsidering and look to better acquaint myself with his work.

Although I've seen these so many times at the Frick, & so many of Turner's other works elsewhere, I was always so overtaken by his use of light that I never observed all of the wonderful details. And I just watched the video associated with the 2017 Turner exhibition. Thank you again, for such insight into a favorite landscape artist.

Beautiful journey through a painting. I am struck by the use of the brown dutchlike underpainting, and the proportion of ships, sea, and city to sky. It seems later the sky and atmosphere take over. Thank you for your personal viewpoint and connection. Interesting to sea the transformation of it today.

Years ago, when I was too young to appreciate what I was seeing, I was fortunate enough to attend an exhibition at The Clark Museum of Turner Seascapes. I wish Mr. Xavier had been our guide, as I know I would have understood what an exceptional opportunity it was to see so many of Mr. Turner's paintings, in one little jewel box of a museum, at one time. Thank you, Mr. Xavier for making history and education so delightful. It is so nice to have these presentations to look forward to each week.

"The sun is god." Quite an interesting way to end the program. It seems Turner recognized that our ancient ancestors had a valid point when they chose a god that actually regulated their lives, and who visited them every day. So much more sensible than the silly myths that we invented later on.

I remembet a train stopping in Cale and arriving with a boat in Dover first 18years to England and travelling further to Sally Wels to study and work.Turnerc painting I saw since that in exhibition in Europe. For mee sonset is beautiful but not God.Jezus is mine god.

Constable was more concerned with having RA after his name and having a career...Turner was more interested in putting paint on canvas.
