Coconut Island protrudes from the Pacific Ocean as the peak of a lone volcano, far off the Costa Rican coast. At the end of the 18th century, the English author Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have received the inspiration for his novel „Treasure Island“ here.
The tiny island comprises just 25 sqm² and is covered by an impenetrable jungle. Numerous streams, waterfalls and gorges epitomise the world‘s largest uninhabited rain forest island. Due to its isolation, unique flora and fauna have developed here. Today, as a national park and world natural heritage, the island is closely supervised by park rangers.
The outstanding underwater world surrounding the island abounds with marine fauna of every description. Hardly any other destination is as well-known for its countless large fish varieties, especially hammerhead, reef and offshore sharks. The film‘s author submerged to depths up to 400 meters on board the „Deep Sea“, a modern research submarine. During the dive, he ucceeded in shooting material of rare deep sea fish and shark species, which have never before been sighted near Coconut Island.

Last time I dove Cocos they weren’t doing night dives, too bad cause there was always a lot of White Tip action. A woman died in a tiger shark attack a couple of seasons earlier and night dives were considered too dangerous. We saw Tigers a number of times on day dives though they stood off quite a distance. Beautiful creatures. I disagree with the narrator’s calling the Hammerhead’s head “grotesque”, I think this adaptation is fascinating.

What an amazing job/career/home for the park rangers‼️ I commend them for leaving this island virtually untouched by civilization. With pristine places like this disappearing everyday, it's a comfort to know that there are still people who revere its magnificence and don't want to see it spoiled by hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, bars and hordes of vacationers and profit seekers. It would be wonderful to see this island every five years, just to see how nature transforms its landscape . Thank you for sharing this documentary. It's a beautiful place.

The waterfalls, the trees, the sea, the school of different kinds of fishes, the sharks of all kinds, the passing through of a Whale Shark and the Manta rays. All of this was Incredibly Stunning. Wow!! I just hope that Pirates will not visit the Island. For the watchers, please keep safe the Island from the Abusers💕💛 Especially the creatures under the sea.❣🧡🥰

Yes, it’s “Cocos” Island. I was there back in 1985 as a volunteer with Earth Watch, supporting Dr. Tracy Warner who was doing field research on the Cocos Island Finch, for her PHD. There were 7 of us Americans and 3 Costa Rican National Guardsmen. (Costa Rico had to keep a presence on the island.) We landed in the ocean surf, slept in tents, and bathed in a stream that had been damned up to make a pool. A most magical time!
