The CoCoSDC is a floppy disk controller board that emulates the original floppy controller, but lets you load images from an SD card, which mean an entire library of thousands of floppy disks can all squeeze on a little chip! The disk images are mounted as virtual floppy disks, and can then be used just like real disks containing data and programs. Wicked cool stuff!

thanks, this is a really old one, there are newer ones to show how to set up the SDC explorer, and upgrade the firmware and DOS versions, etc.

If you did not do it yet, you should upgrade the video to CocoVGA and get perfectly sharp RGB image.

Dallas Quest would stay in the game while hitting reset. It had a special reset screen where it would show 2 color boxes and you were to keep hitting reset until they were the correct colors.

Yea i remember a lot of games that would capture the reset button and not exit back to BASIC even if it was loaded from disk or tape, that was a neat feature, the ability to reset the colors. When I first made this video, I knew next to nothing about the SCC, I've learned quite a bit in the year or so since then, there is an updated version that shows how to update the firmware and add the SDC Explorer program which is a menu based loader.

Props due also to Darren Atkinson, the designer of the CoCo SDC. Somehow I have ended up with three of those nifty devices, for convenience mostly - one for use on a CoCo 1 or 2, one for the CoCo 3 and yet another for my Dragon :-)

+quinton quill I started with cassette tapes, had to deal with those for a while, which took FOREVER to load up anything, I had to save for a while before I could purchase my first floppy drive, and when it did, it was like high speed heaven compared to those tapes :) As irony would have it, since the CoCo had Microsoft Basic, it's DOS command were also derived from MS-DOS, so when I graduated to the PC, I had a short learning curve in both the DOS commands as well as the BASIC language.

hello can some1 tell me how to extract a bin file from vdk to cas image? is there a program to do this? thanks.
@Ogsteviestrow
@Ogsteviestrow 3 жыл бұрын
you would probably have to have the various items connected to an emulator then transfer them across the various virtual medias, there are programs that can do this on modern computers look for "Tool Shed" it's a command driven set of utilities.

responding to your questions late and out of order, but, I've answered this question the SDC is a real hardware device for real computers to allow them to load disk images, it's not emulated because emulators can already load disk images, but without the fancy menu loader.

Can cartridge ROMs be added as well, or just disk image files?
@Ogsteviestrow
@Ogsteviestrow 4 жыл бұрын
All of the cartridge ROMS have been converted to disk images and are available on the Color Computer Archive, so that's the route most people take. The CoCoSDC has a few extra "banks" that could be flashed, and, if one chose, they could burn a cartridge ROM image to one of those banks and boot to that, which would be great for testing of something you wanted to end up on a physical ROM, but, if you just want access to the original cartridge based software, they've been ported to disk.

@@Ogsteviestrow Gotcha! I didn't know if converting the ROMs to a disk image was a thing. I've got all of them, waiting for my CoCo to arrive next week.

Normally you get .BIN files not .BAS files. So for .BIN files you do... * DIR- * DRIVE 0,"FILE.DSK" * DIR * LOADM "FILE.BIN" * EXEC

This video was made when I first got the CoCoSDC and wasn't aware of the many "images" of disks available, or even the CoCoSDC Explorer which is a menu driven loader/launcher, and is usually what I use now. I'm pretty familiar with most of the functionality of the device at this point, appreciate your feedback.
