Note: the last reference gives a different account of Juan’s wartime adventures as compared to the others. I have stuck to the version form the Spanish newspaper and the MI5 website. From this last reference I got the details that he was a signal corps officer and a chicken farmer.

Great video! I missed a small detail about Garbo and Op. Overlord: Garbo used the slowness of transporting a mechanized armada, the distance between Normandy and Calais, and the time that would have to be invested in deploying a contingency plan by the Germans for his own benefit. The night before Garbo tried to communicate with the Germans to confirm that the main invasion was going to be through Normandy, knowing pretty well that it'd be moot as they would be asleep and, even if that had not been the case, they would not have had time to turn around in time for the invasion. When he managed to get in touch with them the next day HE RIPPED THEM A NEW ONE, claiming that he "will not stand for such incompetence". Sass level: 100.

@@historiculgeomocule5569 No, the point of fiction is to induce the willing suspension of disbelief. The masters of fiction manage to tell outlandish stories and still produce the willingness to accept those stories as, at some level, plausible. I probably stated it in too strong terms. I didn't mean that this story would absolutely fail as a work of fiction. I was trying to say something like, "You can't make this stuff up." Or, as tome57a put it, "... truth is stranger than fiction."

Just for the record I met him in Caracas in 1979 and he was a delightful raconteur and polyglot. The local Venezuelan press were all over him after he visited Buckingham Palace to receive his award. His secret as a pathological liar was his charisma and his stating that anyone is almost invariably convinced by a situation that is just too good to be true. I wonder why Canaris never fact checked his early military involvement with the Spanish Republic.HIs entirely “notional” , his own word in English, network of phony informants included over 400 hundred contacts all with great detailed verisimilitudes to explain why they were pro axis ! A triumph of the imagination worthy of a major novelist .... In person he was so insignificant and yet .... many lives were saved by him RIP

To properly do Chesty Puller (I had the pleasure to hear him speak at The US Memorial in San Francisco on The Marine Corps Birthday in the 1960s) properly would take more then the time allowed in Simon's videos I love this saying of his "New Corps,Old Corps,Its still the same Corps".( I think this was said for the defense by Puller. at the trial of S/Sgt McKeon 1956..TRIVIA : In the US Navy the rankings of personnel go by the dates of the promotion. Therefore since General Puller was called in to active service in 1959 for the trial of S/Sgt M.McKeon, Would not he at the time become the only US Marine to outrank The Commandant Of The US Marine Corps as The Commandant at that time was also a Lt.General .?

Simon, kudos to you and your whole team. IMHO, many of your videos on your various channels are as good or better than anything produced by the networks. As a fellow history and technology geek, I really appreciate your topics, research and presentation and editing. I will continue watching, often to the detriment of my "to do" list, and hope that we'll cross paths one day. As a fellow content producer/vlogger, I am inspired.

My wife and I quite enjoyed this. I've read several books on Pujol, and consider him histories greatest BS artist. Two things I would have added? All the money being sent to pay Garbo's fictional spy network was actually being used to fund the British counter-espionage effort. And at the end of his service to the war effort, the British gave him half the money collected to start a new life in Venezuela. Another thing is that because the messages being sent from England to Spain would be decrypted in Spain and then reencrypted with an Enigma machine to be transmitted to Berlin. This provided the plaintext which would be used to crack that day's code. If you knew exactly what was going to be coming through 2 hours after it was transmitted from London...

This was a much different episode, as it felt like I was watching a spy thriller. Great job! Speaking of spies, maybe you could do Oleg Pinkovsky, the GRU agent who tipped Khrushchev's hand to Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. For the opposite side of the Iron Curtain, I'd recommend Johnny Walker, a US Navy chief petty officer whose spy network spanned decades of work for the USSR.

I have the book on Agent Garbo. Definitely one of the more amazing stories of WW2. Without spoiling anything: this is the sort of story which if you wrote it as fiction would at best be compared to Indiana Jones material... but more likely to cheap potboiler novels. Enjoy the video!
