I mean I've personally been getting more offers than ever... The issue is simple, people aren't very "good" at coding. They learn quickly through resources online, but they don't learn well and they lack ANY real-world experience. Why hire someone who's going to cost you money and be a pain to work with, when AI and a couple of the right team members make life a breeze?

Nah bro the pandemic is when there were a lot of offers, I still get offers but the jobs are not remote. I think the problem is that most people are now picky, and the IT Industry reached it's buble, kinda like crypto it was all time high back in 2020s to 2023, now it is on it's all time low.

With all the developers that can't find work that energy still has to go somewhere. So what I think will happen is that more diverse applications will start to show soon as people work on what they want to work on and what directly benefits themselves as opposed to working on what benefits a company. The beginning of this video made me laugh. He says he started studying computer science in 2015. Don't know his specific path, but if I assume he got a four year degree he was in college between 2015 to 2019. During that time, I specifically remember how much people were complaining about how difficult it was to get their foot in the door. He says it seemed easy. Maybe for him, sure. Between 2012 to 2016, web dev was super popular (from what I remember) with entry level positions getting flooded with resumes. Truth is, things have always been difficult and they seem to be getting more difficult. A really good point he makes is just finding a specific niche to get good at. Web dev has always been super popular and gets flooded with low quality candidates since it's easy to get started. I've personally focused on finding the jobs people don't seem interested in or are somewhat esoteric. So far, that strategy has worked pretty good.

I guess the problem is not about new languages, but the problem is the ability of humans to compete against AI to build better software in existing as well as new programming languages. Using AI, we can write entire code for a Website in a matter of hours to few days. AI just learns, optimizes and always matches the best programmer in industry. So, to compete against AI, one has to be as extra-ordinary as the best programmer in the industry. No human can match an AI when it comes to Data Structures and Algorithms as AI can play that chess way better than humans. Besides, one can imagine the fate of software job seekers when Quantum computing combines with AI...

Thank you for this post. I earned my A.A.S., with certifications last May in Web and Mobile Development (yes a CoVid Layoff victim). OMG, the market today is at flood stage. As a novice, I am finding opportunities that require experience are a requirement, and I still question my skills. I even worked for 1.5 years as an intern. I decided to study more code as in extensive JavaScript. It is going well, but wondering where to go from here. I have no problem taking an entry-level job. I'm not looking to become wealthy overnight. Kinda scary.

My biggest regret, I found a job, but my salary is lower than cashier and I don't have any option to change the job at the moment. Not to mention that my expectation in this field were that I will work with more educated people than the ones that I was working for 10 years in Logistics. Well, that isn't true at all at least in my current job! Not to mention my social anxiety is all time high because this job has such a big learning curve and no one is giving me feedback if I am improving or not, so I don't have a clue If currently I am selling myself for less than I deserve... And last, but not least they require you to know 20 different technologies just for a junior job and as I mention the salary is shit! If you're not insanely big nerd without any desire to have social life you might have a chance in this industry, but imo the days where you could work this and earn your salary without being overly stressed are close to end... For now I am only ruining my health and I am wondering why?!

Cuz even if you were both (full stack dev) then clearly you are in the start of your carrer you obviously have to show your company in 1 year the progress that you have made and you should absolutely, fix your state of mind as you feel pitty for yourself, you hate your job and yourself. Be happy that you got the chance to work. I am currently in similiar situation as a devops specialist everyday is a new thing that I have to learn and give a solution to different clients. I get that "cashier salary" now, but at the end of my test period (6 months, I am on the 4th now) I will ask for full time work + about 30% raise as I have gone immensely better and more optimal at doing my work there! Your time is such better spent learning to become an electrician or something. You look worn down. Are you getting enough sleep? As for the topic at hand, there is very little innovation anymore. Just about any idea one can think of has already been implemented. The same situation is happening in the vocal and visual arts. There's really nothing that can be sung about now that hasn't already been sung before. Movie ideas have run around. It's now formulaic movie making. Years ago (try 1998-2003) I bounced between two schools (community college and university) taking programming courses. Visual Basic and C++ were all the rage, with Java coming on strong. What stopped me from doing anything with programming is that I'm a very practical person, and there just wasn't anything that I could think of that (a) wasn't already downloadable somewhere or (b) was worth my time writing.

I feel like there’s so much shit talked on the university approach and that’s understandable but read this to know how the uni approach can work. I understand I’m privileged no need to let me know: went to CC for a while and got As since I was able to dedicate myself to school and a weekend job. Got into every UC for CS and/or math with As, CS tutoring exp, and 5 and a half years working a high stress/crisis oriented job, and as much effort as possible put into my personal essays. Went one of the more rigorous UCs. Poured my life and soul into it and applied to more internships than I can count. Each junior year got 1 FANG internship accept and did not get return offer at end. Senior year got 1 offer from good company not FANG but still very good. Got return offer for that. Came into job after grad with no practical skills. Worked my ass off to get them on the job. Worked overtime and created a support system using soft skills to help me survive. Finally a strong contributor to important applications about 1 year into the job. Currently flourishing in job.

Yeah f this. I'm out. Its liberating to say it. Studied for a solid year+, got several interviews in the last half of 2022, some for multiple rounds, and was improving with each one. That world is gone. With early 2023 getting an interview became a monumental task. The game has changed and its not one Im willing to play. One less competitor for you hopeful types, good luck! Coding will continue to change and get easier. The good news is it will become more and more available for anyone to create things more easily, although there will be less entry to high paying jobs doing it.

Hi Nick, i agree with a bunch of what you've said but I just want to say that it's a little misleading (just in my opinion) to say that if you aren't keeping up with no-code tech you may get left behind. That is just not true imo. You can pick up no-code tooling, on the job, like overnight. It's simple asf. Employers want to see your programming skills, not your no-code skills. I've never seen a job listing specify no-code experience as a req. If you are going to apply to a role where you will be writing code day to day, they do not care at all about no-code experience up front. You also don't necessarily need to excel at leetcode-esque DSA as a brand new junior. I know its fashionable to tell newbies otherwise. But if you aren't applying for FAANG or big tech roles then you are not very likely to be asked to reverse a linked list, write merge sort from scratch, refactor some quadratic nested loop to in-place O(n), etc. In 2020 when I was first hired, my interviews were asking practical questions like 'how can you handle this incredibly large csv with streams in javascript without libraries', or 'demonstrate you know what inheritance is' or 'when is it appropriate to use x pattern over y pattern' and so on. I don't believe that has changed. Companies care about the skills that generate revenue and the demonstration - as a junior - that you have the potential to learn and grow. No doubt that in the years since then, learning time and space efficient algos and whatnot has been powerful for my work as a backend developer. But it was in no way related to me getting hired as a junior, which is who you're targeting in this video right? For context I am an engineer at a Cloud PACS company (medical imaging platform, to paraphrase greatly). We are an SME. We are not big tech but we ingest and disseminate tens of millions of medical images and reports, and this demands precision, innovation, adherence to security best practices, and compute efficiency. Why the fk would you regulate the job market... Just because someone studied for 3-4 years versus someone who took an online course, doesn't mean they are better. Academic knowledge vs practical knowledge. In the past it was academia vs trade schools. One gets you vast knowledge, the other gets you a job. Experience usually matters more. Unless you apply to companies that require this intimate knowledge and break new ground, why would you take someone from academia rather than someone with experience? People should choose a path wisely. If one never cared for the knowledge of academia, then going there was a waste. I learned the skills I need for my job and almost nothing more so I spent only a few months and barely any money and now I work as a programmer. I was a little lucky but also smart in how I approached it. At the end of the day you need a job to be done. You don't care who does it. And people with lesser education (such as myself) are cheaper but bring great value and if they do a good job, here comes an easy promotion. You are not owed a job because you went to get a degree. You are not owed anything. Go make some projects so you also have experience. Go make connections so it's easier to get hired when there are openings. Or go learn a different trade if you don't want to bother. Regulations are the worst thing that can happen to a market. The more you push it, the worse it will get. That being said, good luck hunting!

I got 8 years of iOS dev experience - I’m eating potatoes and learning AI stuff for like a year now… I can’t compete with generated CWs and wannabes that memorise all the answers from frequently asked questions, that interviewers got their list from. I’ve lost numerous positions to some fake mofos that couldn’t handle the job and seen that position open in 1-2 months. Sadly, I’m too entitled now to try competing with “zoom actors”. Better work on automating these parasites out of their jobs huehuehue😅

Lots of bad advice in this video lol. Getting a degree is by far the easiest way to get a job, especially if you can land a internship. Nobody gives a shit about your portfolio or personal projects, and chasing trends is often a waste of time. The most important thing is your experience and the companies you've worked for. Thanks for confirming this by mentioning chatgpt. Easy to tell the charletans from the people who actually understand what they're doing.
