Coding On A Chromebook

As the fastest growing desktop operating system (OS), Chrome OS has started to mature and become an OS that is extremely versatile. What started as the Chrome Browser only device has morphed into an operating system that has Linux, Android and Progressive Web Application (PWA) baked in. This has made Chrome OS one of the most enjoyable to use OSs while giving power users the ability to create things.
In this video you will learn how you can use your Chromebook for coding and creating things like websites, mobile apps and much more. If you look at my previous article about coding on Android you can actually use all of those tools too when developing on your Chromebook.
This video will be split into three sections. Android, Linux and PWA. We will look at all there sides of Chrome OS and how they can be used for development.

Thanks for the video. I have other laptops but I ordered my ASUS Chromebook for when I need to travel and code. I would like to learn how to use Android Studio for Android Development and I will download vs-code for programming with Django. Question? What does the Chrome os use in terms of a Terminal or PowerShell? Does it have a built in Terminal or do you have to download something like vs-code and use the terminal from this editor?

Depends what type of coding you want to do. It would be fine for things like Visual Studio Code and anything from the app store. Running Android Studio will probably work however might be slow. Hope this helps!

I am picking up a Chromebook today with the idea to have a mobile android development device. I am going with the HP Chromebook x360. Not the latest one which actually has a NVME SSD, but the one before that which sadly still uses eMMC. But it's currently discounted $200 off and I have a $100 gift card to effectively save me $300. But this one has the i3-10110U and 8gb RAM. I was stuck between just buying a 14' Ryzen 3 PC and using Linux. But I miss the simplicity of a chromebook and the insane battery life they offer. I had the $169 Lenovo Chromebook 3 and I loved that thing. Albeit aside from the lack luster 1366x768 TN screen and no backlit keyboard. Other than that I would buy one of those again because of how cheap they are. But I wanted something with at least 8gb of RAM and at least 4 threads. Sadly the i3 in the HP is not 4c-4t. But it should be decent enough for learning and writing a few basic apps. Plus if I need the extra power I have a full desktop workstation I use for my full time job as a 3d Artist.

Hey! The CPU is probably good enough for most things. The ram is perfect you don't really need more than that on Chrome OS as it is very efficient. Hope this helps.

Absolutely. In fact my first Chromebook had 4gb ram and it was fine for coding. Mobile app development might be a bit more slow, however should still work !

Hi, with a dual core chromebook you should be able to run Visual Studio Code with no problems. Any other compatible IDEs will also run smoothly.

Yes! It all depends on how powerful your Chromebook is however I have a video where I go through the installation process. It is easy and runs very smoothly.

So I can run Intellij, Android Studio, VS code etc softwares in chromebook. But usually chromebooks have very less storage and very low processor. So how is the performance?

Hi, yeah you can run them all. As for performance it really depends on what Chromebook you have. I have an Asus Intel i5, 8gb ram and 125 GB of SSD. Performance on my machine is really good.

The Chromebook website will hopefully help you decide better than me. Try this link and it will hopefully redirect you to the India version. www.google.com/intl/en_uk/chromebook/ here you can filter by performance and so on. The Acer spin Chromebook and Asus C 2in1s have i7 models
