...the kind of performance you want to share with everybody. Hopefully we'll look back on the masks and empty hall as a blip in our lives. Love the photography/production, and the musicianship is a delight. There's a magic to Saint-Saens that's too often overlooked.

Yeah, I couldn't believe his Organ Symphony, when I first heard it at Davies Hall in Frisco, years ago, w/ Juan Pascal Tortelier conducting. Memorized it since then, and I had the second movement adagio played at my mom's graveside service.

It doesn't work for me as a brass player in an orchestral setting. There are gestures you can use too. I don't really like pedals, but I have found a bluetooth clicker as a ring works wonders. That wouldn't work on a piano though.

Fun and skilled performance, but somewhat rushed at times. Particularly the tortoises which I personally like performed painfully slow. Guess there was a copyright cut in the beginning of the Pianists? The additional "wrong notes" in the last scale was pure genius!

Saint Saens refused to allow this piece to be published in his lifetime since he thought it would detract from his reputation as a 'serious' composer. I wonder what Tchaikovsky would have said about that.

As writen in the score by Camille Saint-Saens: "Grande Fantasie Zoologique pour 2 Pianos, 2 Violons, Alto, Violoncelle, Contre-basse, Flute, Clarinette, Harmonica & Xylophone" The "Harmonica" or "Glass armonica" is mostly replaced by a Glockenspiel. My point is that it's a chamber music piece for 11 musician, not for full orchestra. I don't understand why people insist on playing this piece with more musicians than are needed. 🤔

I had always imagined that a musician was made to be listened to and not to be looked at. This is not the case for this person. She plays soullessly like a player piano. I don't know if she understands what she's playing. So she compensates with a physique far superior to her talent.

@@Mona-hoch You need to relax. Someone who puts such a professional emphasis on her appearance is open to comment over it. Those, like me, who are fans couldn't care less given her amazing talents, but critique is certainly appropriate for anyone who craves the attention of the public eye by way of her dress choices as well as her musical abilities. I happen to think both are superlative...

Los Angeles has made Dudamel gradually embrace a glitzy, superficial approach to music, like it has in the past to other conductors. Everything starts to sound "for show" and lacks substance, sincerity. Here we're always reminded we're listing to the performance of something recited a myriad times ; it never sounds like the music is being composed now, as we witness it unravel. Yuja Wang too, has now become wrapped into showomanship-above-all-else, and all her skill goes to this soulless rendition. If you find any charm to this, it is from the residual genius of the score, coming through.
