I don't see how Boras overplayed his hand or how MLB made a mistake. Reports from earlier in the offssason were that the Cubs offered $25M/ year. Now he gets $30M/ year for 2 and can opt out. His worse case scenario is $26.66M AAV if he is playing poorly enough to accept $20M for a third year. And MLB didn't make a mistake by having guys still be free agents. Why is the player signing a contract sooner any better for the player or baseball? It just gives sports media something to talk about. That's not either of their concerns. In 1966 Koufax and Driesdale didn't show up until opening day trying to force bigger contracts- they were fine and the league was fine. No reason to change the rules now.

@@Thatdud007 Probably not the same stuff you might be? Bellinger produced a 327 xwOBA which was 43 points below his actual .370 wOBA for the year. His .357 xwOBACON last year was below the league average of .369. His Hard Hit rate of 31.4%, his barrel rate of 6.1%, and his exit velocity of 87.9 mph all all career lows and are all below the major league average as well. There's just so many things that scream he was mostly lucky, and projection schemes have him at best no better than a 2.8 WAR player, so at a AAV of $26.6mil there's a good chance he never covers his worth performance wise.

Guys I’m a Mets fan. With them clearly stating no big FA this year as we don’t want to pay whatever the % was that they have to pay as a penalty. Why would they not have looked at Bellinger at all. I know next year resets for the. With all that dead money coming off the books. However, if the player is a fit for a need what’s one year early to a master plan, for say 1 or two players. Bellinger and Snell would have been my two.

Imanaga is likely a 3-4 at best. Pitchers that move from Japan to MLB always have a big increase in home runs. He had nearly 20 in Japan. That translates to 40-50 in the MLB. It’s had to be more than a 3-4 starter when giving up so many home runs. Maybe he could be taught something to decrease his home run rate, if that happens you have an ace. But until he proves he can do that he is just a 3-4 at best
@chadjustice8560

I should think that second year is almost a certainty. If he has a bad year, he won't opt out, if he has a good year, somebody will have to offer an increase on an already generous 30 million - that seems unlikely especially considering the competition for big contracts and many owners being less inclined to risk another Rendon-style contract.

@@Astonyshing He'd have to opt in to the last 2 years. Which is just $25 mil/year. He'll definitely opt out if he has a similar season to the one he just had.

@Astonyshing 7 ай бұрын
@@brandondillman5841 From what I read today, the second year is also 30 million, the third year is 20 million (see both MLB Trade Rumors and ESPN for Jeff Passan's report). Opting out after the second year seems likely (unless he has a below-par year), but after the first year he would have to hope for more than 30. No guarantees it would be forthcoming.
