At what point would you classify a cough from “dust cough,” to the heaves? The independence might have had something to do with the paint horse letting the roan know he was in his space when he was being ponied, but then he realized he wasn’t attached anymore and the light came on?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Жыл бұрын
It was getting cold at night and hot during the day and hadn't rained in months feeding dry year old hay. All the colts were doing that, non of them got sick
@charliewhon6548 Жыл бұрын
That’s good to hear. I had a pony as a kid that had heaves when I got it, and now I watch like a hawk now every time I hear a horse cough when It’s being warmed up and always wondered when that line is crossed between just a cough and something more permanent.

Hi Brett, Agree this colt is pretty sticky but he almost looks lifeless like when they have a fever. He is too quiet if there is such a thing. I did have a Smokey Duster II colt once that acted like an old man even when he was a weanling. Curious how roany turned out.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Жыл бұрын
I quit that outfit shortly after this video was made so I dont know how he turned out. Good I hope. Ill admit he wasn't feeling good at the time, we had a bit of influenza floating around. Good eye, he probably did have a little fever.

Nice work guys. If that were a real bronc would you have snubbed him shorter?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt2 жыл бұрын
oh yeah. on most colts those longer snubs work well so they feel like they can move but on a bronk we go short

When you took him solo and asked him to stop were you putting pressure on his neck with your right and pulling straight back as you said whoa?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt2 жыл бұрын
yes. Very little pressure with my right hand, just enough for him to push into a little so he would lift his head and neck a little and get some weight off his front feet so he could back up. With the left hand im trying to just bump rather that give a strait pull.

I lost internet when the storm came through! But I bet you still answer a couple questions. :) Why don't you care to snub a horse like that? Just before you stepped on, of all the maneuvers you could do, why do you choose running the rope on the off side and disengaging his hind?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt2 жыл бұрын
I just don't like being snubbed because Im not in control and I have to trust someone else. IF you have good help it awesome but if you don't its scary. Cody is really good help but I still feel icky not being the one in control. I pull those colts around so they see me out of both eyes.

Not trying to be critical, just trying to understand. It doesn’t look like the paint horse is working well off of a signal or off legs or a neck rein. I realize that this is a tight, fast, real-world scenario, and the horse is a bit aggressive toward the other horse, but it looks like more hand movement and pressure (I.e. horse doesn’t respond when the slack comes out of the rein chains) than you’d expect from a horse in the bridle. So, I’m curious, what is your take, and why is he in the bridle here vs. hackamore or snaffle?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Жыл бұрын
Good eye. That paint horse is a reformed barrel horse and at that point I had only been riding him for a few months. He had never ponied a colt for one. Second he had been ruined in every kind of bit except a bridle and was way to strong for a hackamore. When I got this horse he would buck if he was in an arena(I think this was the first time he had been ridden inside since I got him) and would buck and run off if he thought you were trying to train on him. You literally could do nothing to help this horse or he would get mad and buck. I would have liked to have rode him in a two rein but he had had a tie down on enough that he instantly got mad when the bosolita was put on. It was really sad, he is such a kind and gentle horse but had been through a lot of trauma. Long story short I simply used him on the ranch and because a spade bit (the only thing he had never been ruined in) made him happy I rode him in that even though he was not anywhere near broke enough for it. We did a lot of running off and other stupid stuff for several weeks but I never picked my hand up and steered him with my seat, legs, hope, prayer, cussing, my hat at times. When this video was made I had just started picking up my hand and steering him with the reins and signaling him with the bit. While that is not the textbook method for putting one in the bridle it has been done to a lot of horses by a lot of good hands over the years. To this day I would not call Paint a "bridle horse" but a horse I ride in the bridle because everything else makes him mad. Shortly after this video was made I managed to get him to let me ride him in a two rein and I still do. He will probably never be what people think of when they think bridle horse but he is a happy and useful horse. Thank you for pointing that out. There is another video Of Cody riding him that pretty well explains all this.

You should get a bigger bit for the brown horse, you aren’t hurting his mouth enough.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Жыл бұрын
There is not a brown horse in this video. I don't know what you are talking about. Obviously you dont know anything about bits though because the size of a bit has nothing to do with how it works in the mouth. Furthermore sarcasm never really works to change peoples minds or even advance there thinking. I can back up what I now about bits and horse mouths with facts, you can't so you use sarcasm.
