I like places mostly on the far east and west coasts, have never been out to the midwest. My favorite was Mt Ranier, I hiked it about 15 years ago with my folks, it was when I first got interested in survival; started with just a space blanket, matches, and a whistle from a little outdoors store, and there was no turning back! The Ozarks sound awesome! A place with accessible water is a must for me!

Cool idea, will have to try it. I like the latex tubing because I don't have an allergy, but have used Camelbak tubing and oxygen tubing before. Thanks for the suggestion!

Totally agreed especially about the metal container, after I got done reading that book I had to go back and see if I skipped some pages, he never mentions have a canteen cup or pot any where in the book. The basis of my kit is a canteen, canteen cup with stove, canteen cover and iodine tablets. I couldn't imagine building a kit with out it.

All very good points. In a pinch you could always cut open the bivvy sack as a sun cover, but I would use the reusable space blanket as cover like a tarp. Thanks for the input!

Thank you, that means a lot to me. I have the highest respect for Cody, he truly knows and lives what he teaches. But there are some great new technologies out there that have advanced like bivy bags and LED that are well worth investing in. Thanks for the sub!

Good work on the video. One thing I always tell people when they are prepping a survival kit is "use it". Anything you put in that kit and say "this could be used for this", you need to get outside in the elements and do-it. Surprising the amount of items that people end up learning will not do the things they desire. Like sewing with inner paracord. That's not going to happen unless you get a specific needle with an eye big enough to take it, even when separated it's huge. GJ on your kit!

Thanks for the suggestions, I couldn't agree with you more about the stormproof matches, they are all I carry anymore. I only have small Kleen Kanteens, but agree they are a great container. I always have at least 2 firesteels in my gear, but in a few years of using that particular mag block, haven't had a problem with the built in rod, but I definitely realize the need for a backup. Appreciate the input, take care!

Great advice! Nowadays I always advise filtering and boiling over chemical treatments. Chlorine dioxide is the best of the chemicals but it can be hard to find in tablet form. It seems Katadyn stopped making their MP1 tablets which were great. The drops work well also. For filters I prefer those with carbon elements to remove chemicals, such as those used in agriculture, but the 100,000 gallons is hard to beat. Currently I use a Seychelle advanced filter straw and an MSR Miniworks pump

Awesome! I carry Orion Skyblazers, they are just like the 12ga flare guns, but small self contained units. These days I only go with a 3x5 inch glass signal mirror...you're smart to carry extras!

Great cody type survival kit, I have a very similar kits that I have used for over 20 years now. I carry one in all my vehicles and all my travel packs. I carry 2 watter bottles one is a 32oz nalgene and the other is my old US Army issued OD green 32oz canteen with cook kit with lagolos iodine to disinfect the water. look at Ace hardware and Rural king stores for strike anywhere matches. Your right those Wahoo killers are good knives! Great job on the kit and keep up the good work!

Cody Lundin is a former Mors Kochanski student. A majority of what he teaches can be found in Mors' books. Look up the 2 kilogram survival kit manual. One thing when building your kit, avoid redundancies. Many of the things in this kit are redundancies. We have a saying in the military...ounces lead to pounds, pounds lead to pain. Just a thought.

Since you MUST carry extra water in the desert, as soon as it starts feeling heavy and you start to sweat, drink it. It gets lighter and hydrates you at the same time. I used to freeze mine at around 70% full in 2 gallon milk jugs and drink it as it melted. The key to survival is remembering the basics. Water, Shelter, Fire, and Food. Regulate your body temperature. If you can get food & tinder on the way to your campsite, then the only thing you will need to do is to improvise a shelter. :)

I've seen that wahoo killer knife in bud k. I got quite a chuckle out of a Chinese knock off of an already budget knife. I guess I credit Cody with turning me on to the mora knives. I carried the red handled clippers for a few years and have either clippers or companions in all of my kits. I currently carry a bushcraft triflex as my main camping and hunting knife. I like the doan bars as we'll for an emergency fire starter. What I do is I get a new doan bet with all the paint on the rod intact and put it in a plastic sandwich Baggie. (Fold over type) then I cocoon it to the mora sheath with bright duct tape. I use lighters as my first line fire starter... But I have the doan bar plus duct tape as tinder if need be. If I'm hunting I wrap the bright tape with Mcnett camo wrap. Nice video! How would you say the wahoo killers compare with moras? What do you think they were thinking of when they named it?!
@Pointshooter
@Pointshooter 10 жыл бұрын
Thereal111t hey sorry I missed your comment! I like your use of the doan bar, they are the best. I think they must have named the wahoo killer after the fish, because some people describe it as a fillet knife and it definitely does not flex enough. thanks for watching and your comments! Be safe
@Pointshooter
@Pointshooter 10 жыл бұрын
Thereal111t Also, the Wahoo does not stay as sharp as long as a good Mora does, but overall I actually like the handle more than the smoother Moras like my heavy duty. I also prefer the sheath from the Wahoo over Mora sheaths and carry my HD in the wahoo sheath

My producer told me the same thing...I don't carry this kit anymore, I feel the cutting capacity is far too low, and I don't rely on iodine as primary disinfection anymore. Realistically most situations are over within 3 days, usually due to rescue, or that the person has the gear but not the skills and dies. I teach that you need to think long term, and practice with just your kit. Excellent points, and I thank you for watching!

Nice video . I have settled on the cheap stainless wide mouth bottles you get for a couple dollars over the plastic bottle . You can lay them in a small fire at an angle with the top loose and boil water real fast . Also after boiling can put top on and sleep with it . Will stay warm for hours in winter . I ground off paint and coated mine with stove blacking .

Very good points, I've never snared anything with the wire, so I don't know how it holds up, but carrying prepared snares can be illegal some places I go so I stick with regular wire. I will look at the Conibear, never heard of them. And more is always better, if you can set out 6 or 8 snares you stand a much better chance of success. Thanks for commenting and sharing the info!

Yup I agree totally. I actually have taken Bic flints and put them in my Spark Lite fire starters, they work very well. The adjustable flame of the cheapies is a nice feature, but the Bics are way more durable. Every time I see an abandoned cheapie, the flint striker wheel has broken off, and they usually still have plenty of fuel. Bad indication!

My MTech is the standard drop point bowie style. Tanto points are tougher for piercing armor, but I don't see any reason why a drop point wouldn't pierce armor pretty well, and I don't use my knives for that anyway. :P As far as the Mora usefulness goes, the Scandi grind and the high quality steel they use makes them heavy duty 4" razor blades that hold an edge for a long time. They are really a joy to cut with - I bet a Wahoo Killer wouldn't even dent the Pin Oak I'm carving with my Mora!!!
@Pointshooter
@Pointshooter 12 жыл бұрын
I think the idea behind the knife and fire starter is that with those two tools you can create fire and shelter, I think they used to use flint and steel or fire by friction so having a lighter or other firestarter makes things a lot easier
@Pointshooter
@Pointshooter 12 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point...in all my experience I tell people it's better to stay put and wait for rescue, rather than "blaze a trail" but in any case, it's better to have the materials to mark where you've been if you have to move. Thanks for the comment!

good tip for your fire kit. you can go out and buy a small tin of pomade and just really shove your cotton balls down into it, that way when you open the tin, you pull out a cottonball and the side touching the pomade will already be prepared. does essentially the same thing as vasaline but provides you with a self contained kit, and you have a tin now available to you, and can usually fit a small box of matches, a lighter, or a striker inside the tin as well.
@Pointshooter
@Pointshooter 12 жыл бұрын
The mora knives I've seen are full tang, but it's a stick tang which is a narrow portion inside the handle. I'd much rather have something larger so you can chop, but there are ways to make the small blade do what you need

Thanks! Good idea on the paracord loop, I will try out the jug knot! Shame you can't find the drum liners in your area, I just found the smaller ones down in the basement, but I usually carry a tube tent so I leave the bags at home. Honestly I'd rather carry a second reusable space blanket, like the ones by Grabber, I find they are plenty warm, and already have the grommet holes for shelter building. Thanks for watching and commenting!

It actually depends on the type of pack, if there's a separate compartment then yes, I usually just put it all together in that section of the pack. But if I am taking a smaller pack for a dayhike like a panel-loader, then I use zipper pouches that school kids use to hold pencils. I try to keep like things together, such has having a signal pouch, a shelter pouch, etc. Hope this helps!

Yup, a metal container is a must, even if it's a tin can. It is possible to baton smaller pieces of wood with a Mora knife, but not to chop. Larger wood can be cut with a Mora, but definitely depending on location, a larger heavier knife is a must. I opt for a Kabar style bowie knife, good weight and blade length. Thanks for commenting!
@Pointshooter
@Pointshooter 12 жыл бұрын
You're probably right, I should make a hundred foot hank sometime. I carry shorter lengths because I already have paracord pre-measured out and attached to my poncho and reflective blanket, so they add to the overall length I carry. But a seperate hundred foot hank is a good idea

@Pointshooter

Absolutely, with those three you can do just about everything. Cordage and cover would be the next two in terms of importance, but as long as you have that container, can cut, and make fire, you should be all set. I really was suprised that Cody didnt suggest a metal container in his book, but the Iodine does work really well for water disinfection.

Richard Williams Thanks for the comment. The LED upgrade I have in my Mini Mag seems to run forever. It isn't very bright, but squeezes every amp out of AAs. Like you said, things change and my kit is a thousand times different now. But so are my skills, so that makes a huge improvement. I mostly carry altoids tin type kits these days, but always have one of the space blanket tarps with me. Thanks for watching, you might like my more recent videos where I show the tins I carry. I always carry at least 2 ferro rods, a standard rod and the magnesium block. I got a fire piston for Christmas, but it's a toy compared to the ruggedness and ease of use of a ferro rod. Yea, the fire pistons are going to last a long time, but if you can't make new tinder for them, you're out of luck. Under stress you need a fire quickly and don't have time to mess around with the piston. Thanks for commenting!

That kit is certainly a good start, but a few changes would really increase the function. 1. Instead of the nalgene, use a 40 ounce Kleen Kanteen. They can be used to purify water or cook in, so you have a backup for the canteen cup. 2. Toss an extra firesteel with the magnesium/firesteel combo. The built in ones wear down quickly and are of lower quality. 3. Replace the regular matches with stormproof matches...nothing better exists

Another reason as mentioned in your video, to ditch the Wahoo Killer is that it's mystery stainless... With a carbon steel knife, if you did get into a long-term survival situation and ran out of your other fire-starting methods, you'd be glad you purchased a Carbon steel knife... Starting a fire by hand is doable with practice and dry weather, but you will probably get painful blisters the first few times you try to start a fire with a hand drill, at least I did until I got the hang of it!!!
@StevanOutdoor
@StevanOutdoor 6 жыл бұрын
+Rob Davis. The stainless is probably just 12c27 Sandvik stainless, same as Mora uses. For long term fire making carry a magnifying glass and not a carbon steel knife. If you want to use the flint and steel method don't use your knife but a carbon steel striker that protects your fingers and bring some char cloth or at least a tin to make it in. For this weight and space I can carry a magnifying glass and 3 ferro rods btw.

I have the GSI, never tried titanium tho. I prefer the older USGI cups because of the flat stainless handle. The handle heats up more quickly I think, but I can't stand holding the butterfly handles. All my USGI cups are from the 60's, and I use them all the time. I actually prefer canteens over Nalgene because the spouts are flared at the top, so when you flip them to disinfect the threads with iodine, water leaks out and floods the threads. Appreciate your comments, thanks for watching!

I would agree it makes a good addition to the kit, but there's definitely a need for a good fixed blade for shelter building and firewood prep. With a good Leatherman or Gerber tool and a solid fixed blade, you'd have all the bases covered. Thanks for commenting!

Its no problem, I agree that the video is more stylized in my own way, but I think Cody presents a very complete kit. I combine his kit with the works of Les Stroud, and the SAS survival guide for my own personal kit that I carry. I want them to realize that building a kit is more than just reading a book or watching a video. It takes awareness of your environment and the ability to predict what you might encounter, and carry gear you can adapt to those situations. I appreciate the feedback!

I will have to try a Companion, I was impressed by the usefulness of the Wahoo, so a quality Mora should be a good investment. I like Tanto's for tip strength, but haven't found anyone who uses them for bushcraft

Magnesium is a soft metal that ignites and burns when wet. It takes a hot spark to ignite it, but a normal fire steel will do the trick. The magnesium is used as tinder, because it burns hot, and can ignite other tinder, even when slightly wet. It's sold commercially as a striking block, the best one is made by Doan, or by Coghlans

If you keep it in the dark (i.e. in your survival kit) it will not fade and then when you use it, if the rescuers find a trail of surveyor's tape, they can tell how long it is been there. So if it is faded, it is not you- if it is still brightly colored, it is a fresh trail and will more than likely be the person they are trying to rescue

I got that knife back when I first got into bushcraft before I knew Mora's also came in stainless. I only buy stainless knives, I can't use carbon steel because the summers here have such high humidity that carbon steel rusts constantly. I will eventually buy a Mora Companion or other stainless one, but I really like the Wahoo Killer, and for someone on a budget it is a great knife. I feel well served by it

That marking tape comes in reflective and you can hang behind you which tells you in the dark if your going in a straight line as well as keeping you from walking in circles.

Agreed. I'm a big fan of the Kabar style knives, I've been thrashing a Mtech knockoff for a while now, I really like a handguard for batoning wood, it helps protect the handle from getting beat up, I think. Stay tuned for a new video where I show what I recommend for gear on my survival hikes, its a combo of Cody's kit, Les Stroud, and my own experience!

The water bottles are a great way to carry some extra duct tape, since you probably don't want to lug around an entire roll. You can also roll the duct tape around a tube or body of a pen, its just a personal choice how you want to carry it. Hope this helps!
