If you remember Saw 3's flashback to Amanda and John setting up the bathroom trap from Saw 1. She had that type of haircut in that scene. So they had to maintain continuity if this picks up right after Saw 1.

Saw the film yesterday. This film definitely the most character driven movie in the franchise. Imagine Saw 1, but a 180 switch of character focus from the people in the game to the people creating the game, thus Saw X. It’s less about the game and more about John. This film compared to the rest definitely the most well acted in the franchise.

I definitely think it's the best, with the other films it could be argued how some of the people in the traps didn't deserve what they got but in this new one everyone that were in the traps deserved it

@@adamgreensides948idk i liked it and thought it was entertaining, however there was no big “twist” considering the fact john still had cancer and was sick in saw 2, u could already tell that something wasnt gonna go right with his surgery, and the twist where the guy grabs the gun at the end. U knew amanda and john had to survive so. I wish it would have followed dr gordon’s story instead right after saw 2, or at least cut between john and dr gordons paths. It just didnt feel like a saw movie to me, but thats okay, it wasnt terrible or anything just so much more they couldve done w it. No suspense, kind of predictable, but oh well. It was still enjoyable nonetheless.

That's why I love this movie. It gives you an inside into John's psyche and mindset. In this story, at least for me I was totally on John's side because this wasn't the first time they scammed someone in profiting from their false hope. I wanted it all of them to die especially the main doctor

It wasn’t that great. The reason why he did what he did was already covered in previous saw movies. I didn’t need more explanation. The traps was variations of what was done before. The twist had been done in 2 other saw movies. It’s very average. Everything about this film was know accept the storyline of him going to find a cure.

10 movies in and to have it be this solid is a incredible feat on its own. This one pairs with the first 3 extremely well. It could have came off as forced and corny but it doesn’t and gives a great broadening of Jon Kramers backstory. Good for Saw. Horror is so back baby!

I’ve just seen it, I walked in with low expectations, almost didn’t even go and can safely say after viewing it they’ve gotten the formula down in this one, it featured a lot more story this time and the final act was very good! I just watched the movie tonight, as an AVID Saw fan, I was weirdly conflicted? I think it's been so long since we've had a Saw film with the original film's formula, that it felt a tad odd to sit through, like a nostalgia trip I wasn't expecting to have. However, I was still greatly entertained, and I'd say it too is one of my favs of the franchise, easy Top 3 for me. One thing though, and I'm surprised no one else is talking about this; Without going into spoilers, the dialogue the writers made for the British characters in the third act of the film is so... cheesy... and also weirdly meta? That really took me out of the film, which is why I think the ending is probably this movie's low point.

Just walked out of the theatre having watched it! I personally love the Saw movies for the super convoluted plot elements and the traps, it’s like this twisted soap opera. I honestly walked into this movie with expectations for more of that, I wasn’t expecting to have a movie with some good writing, and good acting. Very surprised in the best way! You’re review summed it up very well.

Actually this movie was supposed to come after Jigsaw because the writers talk about working on a "jigsaw 2" before Chris Rock came in and said I wanna do one . But we got Spiral and fans mainly hated it. Movie goers didn't watch it. And critically it was another saw movie. So this got fast tracked and as someone who is kind of a fan of this series. I loved this movie. Saw it twice in cinemas. It is definitely up there with the early Saw films.

@thebest12700 I'm honestly okay with the title as it solidifies that Saw is back. And Chris Rock is a name. He ain't a big name but he is a name. And a lot of comedians were moving into horror. However while other comedians like Danny McBride had a respect for the source material (halloween) Chris Rock wanted to change it and make it funny. I did not laugh once during Spiral. But I laughed during Saw X due to its dark humour.

Just in time for my lunch break!! I’m definitely hitting up the theater tomorrow night. I’m just glad we’re past the torture porn era and horror fans expect more out of the genre (for the most part) nowadays. Edit; watched it last night and this may very well be my fav horror of the year. I was wholly convinced Talk To Me would claim that spot no problem. I’m a fan of the Saw series, and even I was shocked by how good this joint was. That blood-boarding scene was as emotionally impactful as it was disgusting. Not an easy thing to achieve by any means.

Sorry that the only thing I can think to comment on is Amanda's hair, but her hair was short in the scene where Kramer appeared to be recruiting her, so she had cut it already by the time she was working with him. Although it still didn't look the same in this movie... I don't have a point. I'm drunk posting. Forgive me.

Loved how this film was more centered on Jigsaw, the fact you sympathize with him, and how because of the main doctor being straight up cruel, he’s basically the hero of this movie. But the one thing I didn’t agree with in this film is that throughout the series, John never wanted the games to be personal, so he usually kidnapped people who had little to no connection to him, but needed his “help”. Even when he did take people who wronged him, those games happened after his death, which in his own logic, weren’t personal to the apprentices. As great as the film was, the premise kinda contradicts an integral part to Jigsaw as a character.
@Senate300
@Senate300 Жыл бұрын
My only gripe with Saw X was that it had to rely squarely on going back to the past since in the present theres no one left of any charisma or starpower to carry the Jigsaw legacy. In alot of ways, Saw X hit differently due to how it pits Jigsaw against an opponent who's shamelessly greedy and unapologetically evil(which was refreshing since the sympathetic villain schtick has been done to death). A direct challenge to his whole philosophy and the M.O. to how operates in his kills while maintaining his moral superiority. This film was a cat and mouse masterclass. A torture porn chess match.
@Pantheragem
@Pantheragem Жыл бұрын
It's definitely the best "movie" out of the bunch. A lot going on with this one. It was actually a drama, with "Saw" elements? I don't know, but i was surprised. Spoilers, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one to find the conversation that John and Amanda had to have, moving and poignant. "Amanda, I am dying". That whole scene kind of broke me, because you know it's a conversation so many people have had to have when the last hope is gone. It also made you feel a rage against the people who killed that hope out of greed. You really couldn't feel bad for these "victims". Lowest of the low.

I cannot lie, I was a little apprehensive for your review, knowing how you haven't been much of a fan of the previous films in this franchise. So glad you liked this one! Saw for me is what Childs Play and Nightmare on Elm Street are to you, so it's a franchise I feel very invested in. I loved this film, and thought it was the best since Saw 3. Fantastic acting, story driven, and some great gore. I even got a bit tearful when John told Amanda she had to accept that he was going to die.

Great review and I agree entirely with it. Like you, I have mixed feelings about the series and walked out of Saw X genuinely surprised by the quality of it. One of my main complaints in the previous films is that it didn't explain why those particular victims were chosen. Yeah, we have a connecting thread most of the time but it's never made clear why Jigsaw himself selected them. For example, why was he interested in the cop in Saw IV? What compelled him to choose that cop as opposed to another? With this one though, it's VERY clear why he chose these particular people. For the first time, since the original Saw, the victims have a personal relationship to him and, even more so than the original, you can completely understand why he went to the trouble of designing those traps for them. In addition, I like the fact that, unlike some of the ones that Hoffman and Amanda designed, these traps were all technically survivable. That's why Kramer never thought of himself as a "murderer" because people COULD survive them (Amanda did in the first movie). It wasn't pretty or easy but it WAS survivable. And, for those who beat the trap, he played by the rules and allowed them their freedom if they wished and was sympathetic towards them. That's what make him far more complex and interesting than most mad slashers and this movie leans into that. But, in general, as you pointed out, this is the first movie where you sympathize with Kramer and, in a twisted way, rooting for him. While we might enjoy other slasher like Freddie Krueger or Michael Myers, we don't ever truly root for them. Here, we do and that's a fun twist. Tobin Bell is 82 so it's hard to say how many more Saw films he has left in him but, based on this, I wouldn't object to another coming out next year if they can think through the story the way this one did.
@themorrigan7702
@themorrigan7702 Жыл бұрын
Its not really the first time Jigsaw's victims were personal. Saw VI did that with John being turned down for coverage for a cancer treatment. I think Saw X is still more personal than VI though because John handled the games himself.

Love the review honestly. The only thing I’ll point out though lol is that when you said “Why didn’t they just go with Amanda’s long hair from the first one?” While yes she had long hair in her interview at the police station, another later movie shows in a flashback her helping set up the OG bathroom trap and she had the short hair. So they would had to keep it short. Otherwise completely agree with everything you had to say. Can’t wait for more Saw Content!

This became my second favourite saw movie (after the 1st one). I would add to the issues only for part of Jigsaw's plan with when Cecilia and his guy take the bag of money, that felt kinda convenient for the plot. And if Cecilia surviving means we see her in next movie then that's fine, but if not I'm thinking her dying alongside her guy would be maybe better not to leave any questions about her, like if the guy stabbed her at the last moment so that she won't live too just after she takes a glance at Kramer, Amanda and the boy leaving the place. It also would be symbolic that this couple who convinced everyone they won't backstab each other would kill one in attempt to survive in that trap

I have to say as a pretty big Saw fan, I really liked it, I'm pretty happy about the lack of de aging on Amanda, it's like a soft filter, but props to Shawnee Smith, I ve liked her since Harry Crumb and the 94 Stand. I have to say though the Saw movies, I felt, and what I enjoyed changed it up between 1 and 6, maybe not as much through Hoffman Trilogy, but the first three were very different, and this definitely had that, there's things that happen in this that I didn't ever think about, the other thing I liked was adding an element of tension, they did that in a clever way. This is definitely in the top 5 of the franchise.

I saw this today and really enjoyed the story, and I did generally like the film more than the last... 4-5 films? The issues I had were 1) the main characters John and Amanda look SO much older than they're meant to be. It just didn't work for me. 2) it was another anti-hero type film where they have to make the new bad guys SO bad to overtake the level of bad the original bad guys are to make them acceptable as good characters (the same thing happened with Don't Breathe 2) Also, and this is just personal to me - but I found the trap scenes harder to watch that usual, especially the first one. I used to watch the Saw films to fall asleep and they didn't phase me, but now even the older films just don't sit the same with me watching people be forced to hurt themselves. But, overall I did like this one and the pacing was good, for one of the longer films it definitely didn't feel like 2h

Well this is really good news after some real stinkers in this series. I’m with you, man, after Saw III things really went downhill. However I actually responded well to Jigsaw and was entertained by Spiral, so it’s fantastic that the series is continuing to return to form. Have you seen Jigsaw more than once? You might give that one another shot while you’re riding the Saw high

Thats great to hear. And quite surprising. Not huge into the franchise either but looking forward to it especially considering it focuses on Kramer and having unlikeable people in the traps

The first thing I did when I came out of the theater was come to KZbin and see if you had reviewed it. I liked the first one it was kind of innovative. The second one was a good follow-up started to be a little twisty. Everything after that was just a blood-soaked blur and I didn't like any of it. Spiral was alright some of the humour was just forced. But this was freaking amazing. This was actually a story that you could follow, that you were interested in and that you liked the villain / protagonist and had great kills. Money well spent

I’d like to point out something about the wig. Back in Saw 3 there was a flashback with Amanda helping set up the bathroom trap from saw 1, and her hair was already short at that point. Seeing as how this movie takes place after Saw 1, which also means after the bathroom trap, it would break continuity if her hair was long.

I saw a post a while back saying that this movie and the paw patrol movie would be the next “barbenheimer” i really wish “saw patrol” would be a thing bc this movie deserves it, it’s the franchise putting its best foot forward to make an amazing movie

I don't think we could've fully enjoyed this movie, had we not seen the other movies, and known exactly who John Kramer is. Knowing they picked the wrong person to scam, had us all rooting for John and Amanda to show them who they really messed with! Loved this movie!

I share your value on story over everything else this franchise is known for, though even this had some minor flaws. I agree with all your points pretty much but these are my negatives/mixed. 1. I disagree to an extent that Tobin Bell is excused from ageing logic as he has a completely different hairline and style here compared to Saw 2, however he is in his 80s so it may have been unavoidable. 2. I found it unbelievable how the villain knew that John is the Jigsaw killer, considering there was only 1 film prior to this and she spends her time fleeing from warehouse to warehouse. 3. I felt the placing of the title 'Saw X' on the screen at the start and end was not stylistically done well as it seemed poorly edited, especially the end as it left me thinking.... "oh was that it??". It felt like there needed to be 1 more scene before the film ended. 4. The villain was a bit too 'pantomime' by the end.

I watched it yesterday and loved it. My only small gripe was the main villain the blonde doctor should’ve had the most grisly, most nastiest death. I know that she was left in that room to rot. But I felt two of the other characters had brutal deaths that she deserved more. I also like the fact that some people survived the traps. The one with the pipe bombs felt so raw and primal. The marketing of this film was great. I loved how they subverted expectations with the trap shown on the poster.

I saw this last night and i had a great time, there was a few funny moments and i enjoyed the final twists and all that, and i loved all subtle references to the rest of the franchise, shawnee and tobin were great in this movie and i felt myself actually caring for them at the end of the movie surprisingly, the traps were pretty cool too and i loved this new version of the Hello Zepp score

So basically a Saw film where the negatives are just nitpicks, stuff that might feel like a deja vu or some wonky 20-years-later-gotta-make-them-younger issue! That's a freaking masterclass for franchises that go wrong after like 3-4 MAX installments, especially nowadays since most were either the most middle of the franchise, either 2nd or 3rd worst ones yet etc. and now this is a surprise!

Yeah, I’ve been a Saw fan since the beginning when I was a kid, but I recognize the series for what it is; the first 3 are an awesome little trilogy and everything after was just the gory horror movie of the year. Now we’re in an era where “elevated horror” has taken the place that torture porn had in the aughts. Us horror fans expect more from the genre at this point, and the horrors with a strong story are usually the ones thriving the most now. Clearly the production team behind this entry made note of that. I’d say it’s a perfect combination of that old school Saw violence with the present day storytelling we’ve come to expect since movies like It Follows or Get Out.

Great review. I myself only liked Saw 1, 2 & 3. All the films after that I thought were pure crap so I kept the film mentally as just a trilogy. So it's good to hear this one is possibly good and going back to it's roots while also delivered in a smart well written way.
