So I did this the other day when going through the process for volunteer fire. I am/was deathly afraid of heights. So I’m just going to give my opinion and maybe it will happen to you. I just stared at this pole we have running down the middle of the ladder and climbed. Don’t think just climb I promise you. I was so focused on climbing I didn’t know how far I was until I was almost at the top. For us all you had to do was slap the top rung then descend. Mind over matter shit sounds stupid but it works. Remember at the end of the day if something were to happen not only are you secured by the lines connected to your belt but the firefighters there will help you and believe me they do understand what it’s like to be scared of heights and hell most of them still are a bit anxious of climbing the ladder even as an old vet. Good luck!

Gottdam right, kid. 30 yr retired and I had to do this. No height issues but there ain't nothin natural about it. I focused on the water pipe too. Scared shitless but I made it. All these years still proud of that. You be too. It sucked.

I’m in the academy right now and I’ve been dreading climbing the ladder. My instructor told me there would be no harness, no safety. So I’ve been watching videos on it. Every video I’ve seen the firefighters had a harness on lol, hoping he’s just messing with me 😂.

I don't like heights at all. Not a fan. But if you're reading this, know that I did this today and it's not bad at all. The ladder didn't bounce even a little bit. I read all kinds of stuff to expect, but I just went straight up, looked around, and came back down. Wasn't bad. I was more focused on getting the task done than being scared of it.

Its really one of those things that I feel you just have to overcome and trust your equipment. I was once very afraid of heights but I didn't wanted that to stop me from becoming a Firefighter because its part of the job. During my Fire Academy we were slowly introduced to higher heights as the Academy progressed starting from ladder to rappelling etc. Wish you the best and goodluck!

How do I prepare myself for this in my academy. Super scared of heights
@CodyVella3 жыл бұрын
Hello Warren, your academy may be run differently than mine was years ago. I was also afraid of heights to some extent before my academy started. I was slowly introduced to higher ladder heights and different ladders as the academy progressed. Because my academy was one year long three days per week I was introduced to these heights more slowly than a shorter full-time academy. We climbed this aerial ladder about 3-4 weeks prior to our graduation and I had many motivating factors that helped me climb the ladder. The fact that at some point I would have to climb the ladder on a fire and its part of the job of a Firefighter was a big one. The biggest motivating factor for me was the fact that I had just put in close to a year of hard training and sacrifice and would not be able to graduate if I did not climb the ladder. By the time I climbed the ladder I was no longer afraid of heights due to the constant exposure of heights between rappelling, ladders, etc. I will say that if you are eventually unable to overcome your fear of heights, you should reconsider a career in the fire service. This is because there are many instances you will need to perform rescues and tasks that will require you to be high off of the ground, though this does depend on your city and its structure heights. At some point, your life and/or someone else's could very well depend on you being able to perform your job no matter the height. Best of luck to you.
@WarrengSJ3 жыл бұрын
@@CodyVella thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of this. I feel like I’d be comfortable with other heights , but just for some reason this aerial ladder gets too me and I haven’t even tried it. I feel like if they explained it how you did it , but attempting it multiple times before graduation day, it would help. In addition, going through all the long days and short nights of stress, it would force you to not let this one thing get in the way of your career! Big facts! Thanks again 🙌🏽

@@WarrengSJ You got it, man! Keep in mind also that many times you are on a safety line just as I was. It wasn't all that bad, looking back It was actually a big highlight for me, glad I worked up the courage to do it. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you might have down the road!
