I lived in FL from ages 6-30, I feel like I had reverse seasonal depression. I HATED going outside in the heat, it made me miserable. I would be so unhappy during the year but when we got the occasional winter weather I would be ecstatic. We just moved to WA in September & I’ve never been happier, I love the weather here! I’m sure I’ll get tired of it sometimes but I’ll take it over the FL heat/humidity any day. Different preferences I guess! ☺️

Completely agree! I've lived in Florida my whole life and South Florida for most of it. I loathe summer here. It's 9-10 months out of the year. The sun is so bright, oh the headaches! I have come to absolutely love cloudy days. We are season-deprived here and it's the same for too much time. Winter is a nice break from some of the heat but it's very hit or miss. It's hard to regulate the cold when it drops quickly and leaves the next day. We are moving to North Carolina in a few months and I can't wait to have seasons!

Same here! I'm from Sydney, Australia and despite living here my entire life, I can never get used to the heat. It makes me lethargic, grouchy, and just makes me stay inside. We've had more gentle summers these past 2 -3 years so it's been such a blessing!

I will second the Happy Light - per my psychiatrist, I start in October and do it pretty much every morning through spring. This is obviously for diagnosed depression but I’m sure it could help anyone with winter blues. They say it’s important to do it consistently and to start earlier in the Fall before the sun has been gone for too long.

Hey! I have a June baby too and we kept her back a year. So this year is her second time in Kindergarten (first year in public school, last year was a private church program) and we are SO glad we did! She is now so much more confident and has taken on a leadership role for her class. I read someone say they held their kid back and it helped them so much as teenagers. Their kid was more emotionally mature and became the friend that everyone went to for guidance and it also helped bypass a lot of peer pressure issues. That sold me! Hardest and best parenting decision we’ve made so far! ❤

Mom guilt is so real! I always say babies are born with a side order of guilt that no one ordered but you can't send back! And no matter what you do...working mom or stay at home mom, it's there. I was a full time stay at home mom, and my guilt was so wrapped up in not helping financially...maybe we could do more trips to Disneyland, bigger birthday celebrations, more fun classes for them. I agonized at times that I was denying them some of these things, while my working mom friends cried when they missed first steps and couldn't go to class parties or snuggle them at all hours of the day. So, ALL moms deal with it. I like to think it means we love our kids enough to want it all for them :-)

Same. I was from central California with brutal summers that seemed to last forever. For the last year my husband and I are traveling looking for less extreme heat. One thing I have figured out is if the weather keeps me from getting outside that sends me into the blues. These last two months I’ve been in the mountains in the snow in Colorado and I hated it. So far at the top of my list I’d Washington/Oregon. The rain didn’t bother me surprisingly.

@sheenamyers6045
@sheenamyers6045 Жыл бұрын
@@kristioster8403 I taught Pre-k for 11 years before having my boys so I was just able to go through a mental check list of things he’d need to know. My first could have skipped KDG but my second was so different. Where my fist picked up school related things effortlessly he’s not much into gross motor activities but my second is SO interested in gross motor activities that he gets frustrated when I try to work with him on ABC 123 activities. But if it’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that they are ALL so different and it’s finding a way to teach them through what they are interested in. My second child just wasn’t picking up the alphabet very well, wasn’t understanding rhyming, patterning and a few others that I knew from my son previously being in kindergarten (and helping out in his class) that he’d absolutely need to know. So I made the decision to give him another year in Pre-k. It’s a decision I will never ever regret. I have said in many many many parent teacher conferences that it’s better for them to be over ready then not comprehending it at all. To be honest last year I said to my husband that I honestly feel if we send him to kindergarten now it’s like putting him in the middle of the ocean without a life vest. And I would say if any parent has that feeling then don’t send them. There is no shame in keeping them back a year. In the end it greatly helps them improve and starts them off with confidence vs feeling overwhelmed. Like I said, with my first there was no question he was ready…he was already spelling, reading and doing simple math. My second completely different and that’s ok. We finally figured out what worked and he’s thriving now. I found some fun locks on lakeshore’s website where the upper case letter was on the lock and the lower case letter was on the key and the locks actually work!! He was thrilled and didn’t even realize we were working on the alphabet….MOM WIN 🥇 I apologize for this being so long. I hope it helps. And if I didn’t explain something very well or you have more questions PLEASE reach out!! I’ll do my best to help out 🙂

What I learned from my 3 kids is that kids are all different and what works for one may not work for the others. Even though I am a total planner and love a schedule I spend most of my life winging it. 😂 We learn as we go. My 14 year old son and I just had a conversation that he will make mistakes as a new teenager and I will make mistakes as a “new” mom to a teenage boy. We have to give each other grace, communicate, forgive and learn from and with each other. ❤

For me I got the opposite, when it was just brutal sun day in day out, oppressive heat that made even grocery shopping absolutely abysmal, I got depressed😣. I would get excited for cloudy cooler days. Being a native Floridian, that’s recently relocated to South Dakota, living through my first Winter. My answer to your Winter blues question is, “no, I did not feel that while living in Florida. I will say, I sometimes felt a bit fatigue from living in what felt like a one-note type of climate, but it’s not the same as this unexplained sadness or grim out of nowhere that I’ve felt off and on this Winter in South Dakota.

I agree. I’m a new mom and struggled with the schedules and feeding etc. The over complication of raising kids comes from being constantly inundated with contradictory information and judgement from social media, friends, other moms etc. And like you said every baby is different so advice from others can only go so far. I’ve only started to become more confident once I just paused, watched and learned what my baby wanted and how they thrived so sometimes you just have to observe and follow their lead! ❤

I actually remember going to my first day of kindergarten many moons ago and I remember my daughters first day of kindergarten, they're 16 months apart so they got to go to all schools together. I can see it like it was yesterday, my goodness lol! Jessica, dress in the clothes you love, there's nothing shallow about that at all. In fact someone told me every item in your closet should be a "wow" piece for you because you deserve that. I've been through the guilty feeling way too much and honestly I still get the guilt feeling because old habits are hard to break but you are worth it, everyone is. I'm sending lots of hugs and positive energy, prayers and love your way, you are the best Jessica, these chats are helping so many of us. I don't get a lot of winter blues, but when I do, pops of bright color seem to help me a lot! Yellow flowers, hot pink lipstick, bright blue clothes (my fav) all help! Also (oddly) citrus fruit in any form. Lemon bars for the win!

I currently live in the PNW and we moved from Florida….I’m very fair, so the constant sunshine made me so sad because I couldn’t go outside much. Literally went to the beach and ended up with 2nd degree burns in less than 3 hours. I love the grey of the PNW, it also really makes you appreciate the sun. I feel like I live in perma-fall and it’s so good for my soul.

Always love hearing from you. So interesting to hear about your parenting style. Oddly enough I don't tend to be super schedule oriented but I thrived on that with my son and used babywise. It helped me a ton dealing with my post partum depression and anxiety but now I do struggle as he is getting older with being flexible. Just like kids every parent is different! Thanks for sharing your experience! You are a Rockstar mama!

Love the video! Just wanted to say I never thought I was the kind of person who needed a schedule but when I had a baby turns out I do and thrived once I got her sleep trained and on a nap schedule. Who knew! We learn so much about ourselves when we become parents. ❤

I also live in Florida,and am originally from New York and while in New York I never had the “winter blues” or Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD. I loved the snow and whenever it snowed I would be outside playing in it with one of my dogs. Or shoveling. I also used to going skiing a lot upstate with my husband and enjoyed that as well. I do prefer the sunnier and warm days of winter here, now that I’m older, but never had any issues with New York’s cold winters.

Bright Light Therapy, BLT or full spectrum light during the winter or fall months was proven to increase the body’s reuptake of seratonin which improved the depression or seasonal affective disorder, SAD, people dealt with during these seasons. So is not a psychological response but a physiological one to the lack of sunlight. Maybe you should try your full spectrum light to see if it helps. I know in later years while living in New York, I used to use a full spectrum light to try and reduce my chronic pain because it was known to help that as well.

Here in Florida! I don't get winter blues for prolonged periods, but we do often have say, a week or so that is gloomy, rainy and/or cold. And that does get to me. But then it'll be bright and sunny the next week! So thankfully it doesn't last long. The upside to living in paradise is that you don't have that, but you also barely get seasons. I'm in central Florida so we actually do get short freezes in the winter and that's way more season than my family in Tampa get lol. Miami gets almost no changes, just slightly cooler weather than the scorching summer.

Hey Jessica, I live in Florida and I do feel the winter blues. Obviously for me is not about the cold or cloudy days, it’s about getting dark early. I don’t do well when I leave work and the sun is going down. I get tired and sleepy and don’t even want to cook or eat. I just want to go to sleep. I love when I get home and I still have a couple of hours of daylight. It gives me the energy to do more.

I live in south Florida and during winter is when i feel my happiest. You’re not sweating on the walk from the front door to your car lol If it’s a really rainy hurricane season I’ll weave in and out of a little bit of depression. So although it doesn’t get cold, there are definitely stretches of time where the weather affects my mood.

We would drive to Texas to visit relatives when I was young. Drove from Iowa. There were a couple places we would always stop: The Big Well in Kansas and Running Indian in New Mexico. I always looked forward to it. We always got to pick something out to take home.

I live in the tropics, where we only have 2 seasons: rainy and dry. Generally and from an early age and because of the frequency of rains during the rainy season, we've learned to literally dance in and enjoy the rain. So long as the rains come and don't cause floods or drown out crops, we generally have a positive attitude towards overcast, gray, and rainy skies. We've always associated gray rainy skies with time to self-reflect, to listen to our favorite songs, to slow down, to cook up heart warming meals, or to prepare traditional hot chocolate that is shared by the family indoors with warm conversations. But we can do all of these and enjoy the rains because we are certain that the sun always come out. And the best thing had always been because after the strong heavy rains, the air is always crisper and fresher and the sun so much warmer and welcoming.

Born and raised here in FL, our weather has been so messed up for so long now that we don't have a real winter season, it's just all over the place. We do get the blues with so many people moving here and the snowbirds lol. That's what gets us. When we have weeks of rain in the summer that is tough too.

My daughter “skipped” 2nd grade then in middle school I decided to keep her with her age group, “holding her back”. Sometimes kids need more time. Not going to high school a year early has given her the time she needed. You do what’s right as a parent for your individual child, that is always the best choice. There is no race to the finish line of education but it can absolutely feel that way.
