Coffee Roasting - Behmor 1600 Plus

Just a quick video of my roasting process for naturally processed Ethiopian Sidamo Ardi coffee beans. After cupping this and trying it out on my V60 I think it turned out really well. Very sweet coffee, fruity aromas, definitely hints of blueberries and chocolate. I absolutely loved it and will be roasting more of it.

I roast outside on my deck so it’s really hard to see the digital timer. A beep would be wonderful!

Great video. Curious why you would metal pans which retain heat and will prolong the cooling time?

Why do you put the manual timer on the roaster?

It looks like you got the beans wet first, did I see that right? If so, why? I roast indoors with my Behmor under a vent hood that exhausts outdoors. No problem with smoke unless I go too far into second crack, and/or use the Behmore’s cooling cycle. In Minnesota winter a step outside and shake it in the drum. Great for cooling, and the chaff blows away in the wind.

Great video...would be cool to see your roast afterward though. ;) How you finding roasting indoors? Thats not your garage is it? I like how you sort through your beans before roasting, no point putting yucky ones in the mix. And i also found a stone (and a stick too) in one of mine once. Bit of a grinder wrecker. Worth doing. Before i made my cooling sieve i tried a few methods to cool, one that worked the best was laying out on a tray like you do, but instead of transferring (which got tiresome quickly) i had my fan as a desk fan and blew air on it, its pretty easy to control how quickly to cool the beans with stiring and distance of the fan. Downside is you blow a bit of chaff around the place, up side is if you have the setup, you can have the tray resting on the open door and youre blowing cool air into the roaster. (turn roaster 90 degrees on the bench even) A good trick when removing the drum is to wait till the catch is in the position that makes it quickest to open...for me anyhow its when the catch is facing uppermost. And you have to be wary of 2 things when stopping the cool early 1 is the light- any bumps when its hot and you can blow the bulb. You can get any standard oven bulb, ive got one thats a little slimmer at the thread than the original and it fits/works fine. (bit of a show stopper without light imo) The other is the afterburner. It turns on when the cool cycle is on so suddenly turning that off might be detrimental to it...but meh, i do it and its fine so far. But something to be aware of. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Hey Chu, thanks for your feedback appreciate it. I do roast indoors in my kitchen. The roaster has two big windows directly behind it so most of the smoke goes out the window. I mostly roast for filter and I find that Behmor doesn't produce much smoke unless you're doing a darker roast. Im not much of a coffee drinker but how does my local barista make the patterns on top? When i make coffee for my mum i buy them in little sachets with milk, sugar and coffee powder combined and i always thought the designs you get on the top of the coffee was with frothed milk but when i pour my frothed milk into the coffee, it just sinks and it just messes up, are you only a coffee roaster or can you also help me with this dilemma?
