Man im so glad Buster is getting this recognition. Hes easily on the top of my list of people id love to meet. HLB is a great band and Vildhjarta is my favorite metal band. I had the reaction Buster did when i first heard them. It was like someone answered a question i never had an answer to.

Ola is so on the nail with Buster being the modern guitarist/producer. He's so ahead of the pack right now and you can clearly hear his influence on the metal scene. Everyone is going for the heavy and massive low end that he managed to tame and everyone's chasing that sound in some shape or form. It's a shame HLB and Vildhjarta are still relatively niche but on the other hand Thrown being so massive is testament to the sound people want.

I'll admit, I was one of those people saying the self-titled album was the best HLB album for a long time, until the day "Ashen" was released. I'm not joking, I've listened to that album every single day, usually in it's entirety, since the day it was released. That album has changed my life, and because of it, my ears have somehow matured and I completely love the other 3 albums now more then I ever have. I still love the self-titled though. I just love this band, period.

Great interview. Buster's thoughts on trying to make a metal kit sound as massive as EDM drums and such, it's really inspiring. Metal needs more producers that are trying to push the envelope on production techniques.
@f6773911 ай бұрын
so everything can get joey sturgis-ified again? i'd argue for a return to more raw, stripped back production, and experimenting/innovating on getting cool sounds and tracks before it even gets printed into the DAW and every bit of life mangled out of it
@RocketToSleep11 ай бұрын
@@f67739 I'm not really into Joey Sturgis. Buster is speaking from a sound design mindset vs whatever it is that Joey is trying to do. Also, depending on the music, it should be approached in different ways. Should HLB be produced like a 1-take studio session or an 8-track Tascam black metal mix? No. It's a much more grandiose idea, and Buster even speaks on that during the interview. There is a point at 1:13 in Blood Spilled on the new HLB album, when I first heard it, reminds me of the production techniques used in some NIN songs, where everything achieves this gritty, distorted texture. It's a soundscape that creates an energy within the track. It's this type of thinking that I appreciate and am really speaking on, just as Buster speaks of. Think of some great albums over time, not just metal, look at the mix engineers and producers and how they created bigger sounds or effected things to become more atmospheric. There's nothing wrong with producing an amazing, raw song/album. It's necessary for so many things. But, there's also lots to be explored and I can appreciate that there are people like Buster, willing to try taking things to a new level. Cheers!
@dilbophagginz10 ай бұрын
@@f67739 It depends on the band/project, you can hear massive difference in how Vildjharta and HLB songs are produced. And going for a massive, larger-than-life sound just works for what HLB is going for.

Never heard of this dude or those bands before. Good interview, but there was one question i wanted answered that didn’t get asked: “how does a Swede get the name ‘Buster’???” I mean, thats a pretty ‘Murican name, how the heck did he get that name? Are his folks big buster Keaton fans or something? Anyway, after checking out Thrown, i can see why it gets so many clicks. Pretty easy to digest. HLB is super modern, lots going on there…just wish there was dynamics “compositionally speaking”. It’s pretty much one long drone…after 20min of that I’m pretty much drifting, even if what’s going on is intricate. Vild ain’t my personal cup o tea, but its done well. Anyways, good interview, cool dude, i like that he’s an “out of the box” producer.

Been following Buster since like 2017 because his work on Currents, Shadow Of Intent or Born Of Osiris really blew my mind. I saw him as the successor of Joey Sturgis who was the king from 2010 to 2014 and I felt that he kept the same vibe of low tuned snare, HARD hitting drums and "over"produced sound that I love so much. So happy to see him gain so much populariry this year, he deserves every shed of attention he is given, hard working dude

I would love to see what Buster could do if he was given stevic's Shuriken from Line 6. Love/hate Line 6. Used an m13 well into 2022 Cause it just fucking worked lol. But they also made a lot of shotty shit just to clamp on a "beginner" market to sell low quality amps at a huuuge mark up. So I'm not about holding any brand loyalty When it comes to being "physically limited" only because you are not utilizing tools. Ola and his company make wonderful guitars, i have 2 and adore them. Hapas look absolutely in the same boat as any other" boutique" brands that are better almost exactly because they are small and can care more about their work. I'm not trying to make it seem like i'm endorsing another line 6 product to just fanboy, If anyone would think that way. Im just thinking that if buster is running into problems like that, There happens to be a super dope tool thats been designed by another super comiited guy who is doing crazy cool guitar shit that built a wicked guitar to do exactly the type of things buster may be wanting to do live. Think of the massive rifage we all could be missing out on if he's holding back music only because he can't play finda way to it live possibly!! Maybe line 6 can throw him a bone, And do some wicked PR with a free guitar. Just a thought! Loved the interview and love his vibe.

I'm left handed but I play a standard right hand guitar. It was more of a challenge in the beginning to learn to pick but it's definitely possible. I could see how if you started upside down at a certain point you wouldn't be able to switch. I knew a couple people who played that way too and wanted to switch but couldn't.
