*Addendum:* It usually comes out a bit more foamy than in this video. My steam wand placement was not great, as I was recording and keeping track of cameras.

I have been on a very low carb keto diet for 6,5 years now. (0 Grams of carbs a day as of today). And yes, I have been very sceptical of the bullet proof coffee. Now I am going to try this recipe. But I first need a steam wand. All I have for espresso is the Flair 58+ which does not steam very well lol!

This is a great idea, will definitely try it! We've been making "bulletproof" coffee for years using an Aeropress and a stick blender, and recently changed from brewed coffee to espresso cut with a little water which is faster and tastes better, so this is a very clever and logical evolution. This would save the step of melting the butter in the microwave first, and using a stick blender in a small mug with hot liquid is not really the best thing to have to do first thing in the morning. 😀

I don’t have an espresso machine yet, but this looks awesome. I’ve been on keto for just about a year, and it revolutionized my health. I lost 40lbs, and now that I’m at my target weight, I drink bulletproof coffee every day, and I can also last till 3pm or so before having a meal. I just make my bulletproof coffee the quick and dirty way, just throw a thick slice of butter into my mug 😆

I appreciate that you shared your stuff with the disclaimers, like, it's not medical, it's not really weight loss, it's just a drink you like and that helped you - but each person will be different, and you can just drink it because you like it. I will try it out!

I am on the Keto diet, lost 1/3 of my weight, it's been a major change in my life. I came up with my own bulletproof coffee recipe, using an Aeropress! 1. Start with 18 g of medium coarse ground coffee (usually an inexpensive medium roast Columbian is fine for this purpose) 2. Boil water to 87 degrees Celsius, pre-wet paper filter in aeropress cap so that it sticks to the cap. 3. In a tall coffee mug, measure 16 grams of grass fed butter, 16 grams of MCT oil, 16-20 grams heavy whip cream (adjust to taste) 4. Brew aeropress with the inverted method (plunger on the bottom), add coffee grounds, add 50 grams of 87 degree water, wait 30 seconds for grounds to get saturate, then add 150 grams of 87 degree water, stir for 5 seconds, then place cap with filter on top, finger tight, plunge out the air that's trapped below the filter, then flip the aeropress onto your coffee mug. 5. After a total of 2 minutes of coffee brewing (including the 30 seconds saturation), plunge out the coffee from the aeropress on top of the butter, MCT oil, and cream that is in your mug. The butter will be partially melted. 6. Get a handheld battery powered mini milk frother/whisk (or the subminimal one) and blend the coffee/butter/MCT/cream into a well blended liquid froth, making sure all the butter is melted. 7. Add an additional 60-70 grams of 87 degree water while continuing to blend. 8. Enjoy a very nice, creamy bulletproof coffee! 9. The only cleanup I have is to put the whisk into the dishwasher, and of course the coffee mug when I'm done! Here's to good health and happiness! Link for the frother I use: www.amazon.ca/Zulay-FrothMate-Powerful-Milk-Frother/dp/B0BZQKN5XJ/ref=sr_1_18?crid=1DQWQH8WSWU2I&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.ClZdvN8ir6T1P3qTmZJECCNYq25OSN75qbvlWyW8HKqvBR0QKAZQVybkR0oohbUGzRaM3yZX3LkK9HmkKft5pJwQZGRiJBfWTILe5Yi55wyssPvuWIdxOTmP9O9tmiWXYvquHBees-BM4KECOLfIvhxhUufawj5ao5WAL7uEAqMYufgod0BixoEm-yuwtwCs.4zr1koR1fGpU4TEKT9UEa2FAwo0_coeaXH7POZIyE_g&dib_tag=se&keywords=blender%2Bwand&qid=1723499010&s=kitchen&sprefix=blender%2Bwand%2Ckitchen%2C112&sr=1-18&th=1

Damn, I don't have an espresso machine. I guess I should have known, since you had an espresso machine next to you the whole time. Wondering how you'd make butter coffee without an espresso machine. Do you need a blender? [Edit: I just tried it with softened butter and a "Blender Bottle" (that you shake with a metal wire ball) and it worked pretty well, but I can't say it didn't make a greasy mess.]

Adding butter or coconut oil to your coffee will elevate your serum LDL-C / ApoB. This is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (heart disease). Not only that, a recent Lancet paper points to elevated LDL-C as an alzheimers risk factor. Additionally, fasting has shown no improvements at weight loss when controlling for calories. Though, if it enables behavioural changes to lose weight, then it’s still valid! Olive oil is a much healthier form of fat (lower saturated) vs butter or coconut oil - have you tried that with the coffee for taste? Also, Dave Asprey, the founder of Bullet Proof Coffee, is A-grade pseudoscience grifter

Like many other foods, it seems like there is a lot of debate around this with some people pro and against saturated fats and also debate around how to interpret cholesterol. I don't feel qualified to say who's right and wrong here. But I do notice that the food pyramid I grew up with has been altered quite a bit over the last years. My position is that if this drink can help people achieve a normal weight there's probably more benefits than harm overall. Olive oil with coffee tastes a bit odd to me, but of course there are many different types, so maybe I just need to find a better brand. And please, no ad hominem attacks here in the comment section, even regarding public figures. It's much more interesting to focus on the substance.
@Trenckyherbs4 ай бұрын
@@coffeechronicler Apologies for my harsh tone. I love your coffee education/videos. I wouldn't have commented in such a way on your video if it didn't also allude to health. The literature is well-established on heart disease risks. Excessive saturated fat will raise serum cholesterol. It is causal and in fact necessary for the development of CVD. High LDL while being ‘metabolically healthy’, is still a risk. All major gov/health guidelines exist because they are backed by evidence. It's important to note who it is that is pro and against, and what the totality of the evidence suggests. A public figure or health influencer does not carry the same weight as the whole body of scientific literature, gov health guidelines and cardiologists/lipidologists, who specialise in the field. CVD takes decades to develop in many cases and is largely symptomless, hence ‘silent killer’.

@@TrenckyherbsGood on you for apologising for the very enthusiastic comments / harsh tone. I’m the same but from the opposite point of view; I have been 12 months very low carb, no added sugar and healthy fat especially clarified butter / ghee, mostly meat and almost no veg but fruit. I have altered my blood numbers that alarmed my GP and lost quite a lot of weight. And I feel wonderful; with minimal inflammation of joints, heaps of energy and no meds whatsoever. Also like you, I search out experts rather than influencers. And like you, depend on science to illuminate my opinions. BUT we are opposite in our conclusions. I don’t trust some experts because of the way the research they rely on is funded. In fact - well fact as I understand it - some respected universities are very well funded by companies that benefit from the findings of that same research. So we weight up the research we find and make a judgment. And we try some of the findings on ourselves to see what exactly does happen. And so far I’m very happy with the results. My wife on the other hand, being a highly trained and qualified nurse of 40 years is slightly horrified - if that is possible - because what I do is the opposite of what she was taught - and is the same as what you are saying. Who knows. All I can say is how I feel and how I understand what my practice is doing for my health. If you want to understand where I am coming from, check out Dr Paul Mason who is Australian, and part of Low Carb Down Under. And I’d like to understand where you are coming from - please share your most significant piece of research or researcher so we can compare notes. With science, you are correct until the next piece of the mystery is revealed. Then you are either more correct or completely wrong until you change and become correct again.
@Trenckyherbs4 ай бұрын
@@SimonBrowneNZ Good on you for feeling better and getting your biomarkers improved. Did your LDL-C go down? My main criticism of the low-carb proponents is their LDL denialism and often ignoring the importance of fibre (eg. colorectal cancer protection, microbiome). Additionally, it's problematic to have an identity/brand built around being low-carb, especially when science questions it. Though, some low-carb folk I believe do it right: by keeping ApoB down using healthy fats. My understanding on the topic is that keto should only be used in place of a balanced diet if you’re in a niche predicament, like certain forms of epilepsy. Even then it seems to be used short-term. I’m aware of Paul Mason - a friend of mine saw him as a patient for back pain. My response to that would be the likes of Dr Thomas Dayspring (lipidologist). He does a great 3 part series which covers everything. He’s also active on Twitter/X. Even if you are happy with your current diet, you’ll surely gain some knowledge (and hopefully reduce your ApoB along the way). Note, I’m not plant-based. I’m mindful of LDL because of family history. Modifying my risk accordingly.
