Coffee or Die

4 жыл бұрын

In this episode of Coffee or Die, Marty Skovlund, Jr. travels to the Bavaria region of Germany for Operation Saber Junction, one of the largest international training exercises in the world.
The premise of this exercise is a "near peer" (aka Russia) conventional force invading Germany from the east. The US and coalition partners respond by inserting special operations forces, followed by a massive Joint Forceable Entry by the 173rd Airborne Brigade's "Sky Soldiers."
For the US military, Saber Junction is a chance to hone skills that may have deteriorated over the last two decades of counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.
But for some of the coalition partners like Lithuania, the threat of an actual invasion looms. And the Ukrainians participating know the threat all too well: their soldiers are fresh from the Ukrainian front lines in their fight against Russian invasion.

The funny this is that we've been doing this behind close doors for a very long time. We were fighting against the aggressor or opfor groups. Its was crazy and fun as hell. Hooah

Our weapons squad leader in OIF1 told one of the Javelin gunners “Frenchy, the only people who wear mustaches in the Army are tankers and faggots, and we aren’t a bunch of tankers!” Frenchy’s first name was Napoleon, and he always wanted to emulate “the paratroopers of World War II.” We were 1/325 AIR, 2/82nd, and 3rd ID had stopped at a sight we would later occupy for four months in Baghdad and our Plt. Sgt was talking to a couple of their guys. He had just transferred to the 82nd from 3rd ID a couple months before we deployed. Most of their Bradley and tank guys had staches. Squad leader would have had some repercussions if he said that in current times.

What ever do you mean. This is not getting ready for past wars its preparing for the future because fights with China and Iran and maybe Russia are a possibility now like they have not been since about 1991. The problem is that the Terror threat has not gone away just because we are no longer in Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria. These 173rd and 10th Special Forces soldiers for example are co-located with AFRICOM for a reason they are the emergency response force for North Africa and as we know there are ISIS and Al Qaeda problems there as well. We really need troops that can rapidly transition between CT, Counter Insurgency, Conventional Conflicts or a combination of those. This is part of building that force. I was in the OPFOR in Hohenfells and have participated in this exercise in the past. I also served in the 173rd Airborne and Special Forces in Afghanistan.

During that time we were only allowed in the area if there was a real world incident. As soon as I seen the intersection shown as the DZ I knew where they were jumping into. The times I did deploy one was a 1 day check the box of react to X and the other was full training before Iraq.

Anyone know what that armored vehicle with the auto-cannon is at 15:12? That doesn't look like a Bradley. It looks like the old Sheridan light tank chassis but with a new turret and M113 type external fuel tanks on the rear. Or is that a modified M113 with an autocannon turret mounted on top and something mounted on the front hull? I thought I knew my armor, but that one is a new one that I've never seen before. Did our airborne units get a new air-deployable IFV? Or is this some prototype being evaluated?

Respect. ✊ I really hope that you guys have the opportunity to see what you have created on the scale that has grown to be. BRCC is the regular unleaded of Freedom. 🇺🇸 Reporting the “real” situations our troops encounter that all the news outlets will never show. And doing it the badass way with a go pro and boots on the ground. No other company can even come close and I’m not talking about just coffee. BRCC is something bigger than coffee now. And as a paralyzed 82nd Airborne (68W) combat medic I want to thank you for everything you do for veterans as well as our active brothers and sisters. I know if I have a cup of CAF or AK-47, then it’s going to be a good f****** day. Keep up the good work boys! This country needs to see what you are creating. Thank you! You’re welcome in Mats case!😂🍻🇺🇸 AATW

The only problem with the training op, is that the majority of airborne units are or never will use airborne insertion into the battle field, due to the speed of conventional armored forces and the air superiority of american assets in the theater. The fact US military doctrine has faded into armor and calvary units for the tip of the conventional spear, leaves airborne units to secure smaller strategic locations. Now that the majority of conventional airborne units are converting to air assault units, the foot and air bound infantry are becoming dinosaurs. The US will always maintain the 82nd and the 173rd for immediate global quick deployment units, but their air drop days are over.

They showed them drop at as about 10:55. Probably sdon't want you to see the rest. Or since they were filming in the plane.... hard to also be on the ground to film.

I saw them come out of the plane. Before that they showed the units in packaging before they were loaded 1:05 and it looked like they had them packed with crushable materials to take the force of hitting the ground. I was hoping to see how that would work. See how they hit the ground and how they recover them and what the package looks like after it hits the ground. You could be right and there may be something in that sequence of operation that they don't want us to see.

My Question is? Wouldn’t mass air drops be depending on if you had air dominance? And I would imagine that they would also be vulnerable to SHORADS Weapons (such as manpads etc.)

I know it's physics, science and expertise that makes it possible (and generally safe), but seeing a 10k lb Humvee being dropped out the back of a C-130 still gives me the shivers xD

As the New Silk Rd Rail comes in through Russia. You're going to be up against them especially Mongolian Chinese, they don't know about the Geneva convention and their favorite weapon is CQB with Trench Spades. Too old to be there other than in a rusty Sniper role. Well done Guys.

Think about that next time you hear about some successful mission like bin laden raid. The countless hours and effort that made stuff like that possible. Somebody in some mess hall had to feed those guys before they left. You cant operate without food. Every job in the military matters. People dont understand that often enough. Honoring veterans means alot because without them. We dont exist. Period. We would be hitlerville or some dictator or communist ruled country and an almost guaranteed hell of an existance otherwise. You owe your life because of it. Other than God nothing is more important to your way of life. Makes kneeling at a ball game sound silly huh.

I use to be a crewman on h60s and it would feel weird when 1 min ago we had a whole platoon of SEALs that filled the bird but the ride home or to a holding pattern was in a way weird. Everything goes dull and quiet.
