Hello teacher! Would you mind sharing the links here on KZbin? I'm really interested in intonation and wanna read the Guidelines for ToBI Labelling that you mentioned but when I type the link in search it won't open. (studying in Beijing Normal University currently and I'd love to do learn more about phonology and prosody in general, so fascinating) Thank you! And thanks for the explanation!

Good job! 17:53 "Normally the accent is on the last stressed syllable..." This cannot be right. This would be as much as suggesting that English polysyllabic words tend to be oxytones. Paroxytones are much more frequent, and therefore, when considering words in isolation, pitch stress is more often on the penultimate syllable. But this is pretty irrelevant, I think, and has little to do with NUCLEAR TONE, which is the term I'm most familiar with (J. C. Wells). The nuclear tone within the Intonational Phrase corresponds to the pitch stress in it (only one per IP). Now, the nuclear tone is expected to be found on the stressed syllable of the last content word in the IP. Yes, nuclear tone or nuclear stress is at the end (to the right), but not on the last syllable of the word, but on the stressed syllable (primary stress) of the last content word. So, in "You know (H*)Mary", a neutral, literal, non-nuanced version of the IP would bring a primary (melodically significant) stress on "Ma-", but not on "-ry". Of course, in a different kind of rendering, sanctioned by context and whatnot, the nuclear tone might perfectly be on "know", "You (H*) know Mary", which would introduce some extra meaning and nuances, which I'm sure you are perfectly aware of. The tradition I'm familiar with suggests that literal, non-nuanced meaning is most frequently attained by bringing the nuclear tone to the right of the IP (last content word), whereas nuanced, implicative, speaking-between-the-lines realizations are attained by bringing the nuclear tone to significant earlier words. ['Manny came with H* Anna' would mean 'just that', while '(H*) Manny came with Anna' would imply that you believe your interlocutor believed it was, say, Alex, instead of Manny.] Thanks for the video, and very good teaching, by the way.

That's a fair point about words in isolation. I didn't say that the nuclear accent would be on the last syllable of a word, but the last stressed syllable of a word, though. And that's "normally" the case, so, yes, adjustments in prominence can be made by shifting the focus to other parts of the utterance.

@@cognitivephonetician You're right. I did not read you properly. My own teaching got in the way. Being within the British tradition my wording differs sublty when I define 'nuclear tone'. The nuclear tone begins on the (primary) stressed syllable of the last content word. But your answer, on the other hand, has re-activated evil in me, and now I see that there might yet be issues with your definition. There are a few words in English which carry a tertiary/secondary stress AFTER the primary. Some of these words are compounds, such as 'somebody', for which Wells prescribes a primary stress on 'some-', and a tertiary/secondary (depending on the edition) on '-body'. There are other complex words, not compounds, that present a similar structure: 'symbolism', 'pleonasm', etc. Here the nuclear tone does not begin on the last stressed syllable (here -ism), but on the penultimate stressed syllable which has a primary stress initiating a melodic fluctuation. Following Webster something similar could happen in American with words like 'inventory', with nuclear tone in 'in-' and a secondary/tertiary stress on '-tory'. I appreciate you quick response to my very long and boring comment. I enjoy this exchange, though. I do like your videos very much. It is so generous of you to share your knowledge like this.
