It's a very old tabletop RPG system/style. You always get a bag of holding after you figure it out without it once or twice, around level 3 to 5 in D&D. Why? Because as the DM I'm really going to need you to pay attention to what I'm saying and not writing down a bunch of superfluous details on your character sheet. Making you decide if you're going to bring a 10 ft Pole or a shovel is funny only once. When every little piece of loot matters should only be at the very beginning. Even use a Tetris mechanic like Diablo, where everything has to actually fit in a backpack. And the loot is incredibly detailed. Marking the point where the player goes from poor to middle class is this easy as giving them an NPC that now handles all their loot for them. Even progress further where you end up with a small encampment following you around. Like a group of dwarves ready to pull out every nail in the dungeon, restore and sell all the furniture etc. Magic folk following you around to the entrance but not actually going in until you clear it, who also provide goods and services like enchantments and potions and such at a discounted price for access to anything you find in the dungeon magic lore related. Etc. So you can do potion crafting, but you don't have to after a certain point. And so on and so forth. It also means that as you progress the game you don't overwhelm the player by having to deal with the minutiae of subsystems. It's there if you want to take advantage of it, but not necessary to complete the game. At least that's how we do it in tabletop land.

The main reason Tears of the Kingdom popped off was because of the ability to put any two items together for nearly endless combinations of weapons. My major complaint with the game is that it isn’t dark enough, and I don’t mean literal darkness. I can look at this developer and already tell that this is a passion project including fishing and sword fighting. I’m sold, will support and will wish list. I just hope Emberville will have a really extensive and creative crafting system with many types of weapons including scythes and Crossbows, also many different boss fights. Looks good already though!

Unlocking QOL in game is fine. Obv how fun it is depends on what extent the early QOL is downgraded, but generally speaking its not a problem. Many asmon viewers will defend POE like their life depends on it and POE has QOL on the shop as microtransactions... having it unlockable in game is better.
@arcc4
@arcc4 10 ай бұрын
It's not that hard to defend dude. It's a F2P game that has to make money and stash space/ premium tabs were the bulk of their revenue especially in the earlier years. Also, running a database storage and trade API is not an insignificant financial burden on GGG plus without a cost layer involving items/trade there would be nothing limiting the number of bots that people would make. So it's more than fair that this be something players purchase when they want to keep playing and need the QoL deeper into the game.
@LogoRR
@LogoRR 10 ай бұрын
@@arcc4 ofc it made them a lot of money. Make a problem, sell the solution. But that is not what is at question nor is whether a f2p game is allowed to make money.. Asmon asked if it was bad game design to gate QOL stuff, like having a minimap, behind story progression milestones like Cohh was mentioning implementing into his game. I generally dont think its a problem, esp compared to games that lock QOL behind microtransactions.
@arcc4
@arcc4 10 ай бұрын
@@LogoRR Except, you're not qualifying why in comparison its a problem and you're dodging the point I was making at the same time. You will have to buy Emberville. This in effect means you are paying for QoL features regardless of their design and implementation. How is that worst than paying for QoL locked behind MTX in a F2P game when both technically cost money? More importantly its not comparing similar things. Emberville will be single player where it perhapes makes more sense to integrate features/QoL as part of the story, characters, and progression. PoE does a lot of that too. It's the QoL/features related to being F2P, online, multiplayer, and having a game economy that are locked behind MTX.

i usually dont go for the retro looking type games...That being said, I've played Symphony of War, Ogre Tactics, and Songs of Conquests and have loved them so retro 8bit graphics isnt a deal breaker for me. Nice work Asmoongold showing such good support for a fellow creator in Cohh. There's room at the table for everyone to eat!

This is a very good idea. Someone is trying to run with the Stardew Valley genera. There is a unfilled niche that I think this game is trying to fill. I have felt that void myself and have thought many times that we need a more combat heavy stardew valley.

The game's concept seems interesting, and I'll be keeping an eye on it. I agree with Asmon about QoL. It would suck if it's one of those situations where, "Don't worry! It gets better after playing 20 hours!". If those things unlock rather quickly, that's fine, but if the devs put too high of a value on having those basic things, then the player's experience, and the game itself, will suffer.

@korndogz69
@korndogz69 10 ай бұрын
@@ForsakenLogitek It CAN be considered progression IF it's done right. If it's treated like gaining skills, and there's a story related reason for unlocking QoL features, then it'll work. Otherwise it'll seem like they're just trying to artificially make the game harder/longer for no real reason.

I don't get why Cohh is even announcing it so early. The game doesn't have a unique look or it's own identity yet. It looks very basic, which he basically said, since it's very early on. Like it's great to support something early from time to time, but this announcement felt like a miss.
@chanter3978
@chanter3978 10 ай бұрын
He isn’t choosing to announce it early. I’m assuming that the team that created it decided to put the trailer out on steam to start generating hype for when they enter EA, so Cohh is putting a video out to help achieve that.

I think the idea behind it is to go back to the old days when people had to go to forums and search for helpful information to make daily game life easier. It's about something other than how to get the most potent weapon or armor set in the game or how to beat the field/ dungeon bosses. Indeed, the game wants to be explored ~

Asmon, don't let getting a C in programming class hold you back. I failed C++ in high school (health problems caused me to fall very behind when I was already having trouble keeping up in class), and I let that hold me back for over a decade. I'm an indie dev in progress now, and the only thing that'll hold you back is time & effort, not your personal limitations. There are plenty of resources to get you goin; give it a try!
