Hi there! Not a dumb question at all!! In fact, I wish Coinbase Pro was better with the tracking/reporting functionality. With that said, they do have some basic statement exporting functionality that shows you all of your trades, basis for each trade and fees. If you're on your desktop logged into Coinbase Pro - click on your name in the upper right hand corner and you should see a drop down for 'statements'. This is where you can choose All or just Filled orders then you can choose a date range and export as pdf or CSV (excel) file. I'd highly recommend the CSV as you are able to do easier math / tracking right in excel! Hope that helped. Very simple and to the point. I'm on Coinbase Pro and will be making use of the Stop Limit order when buying a random coin and it has 30-40% spikes every now and then goes right back down. Setting the Stop Limit at that spike price and make a few bucks. And that little gem about people using ending with common numbers like '0' or '5', so use a number outside of that ...totally makes sense! Great tip

The risk is of the entire order can't be filled at once, it won't be filled at all. Limit and Stop orders are not the same. Brian, your videos are awesome! Quick question, what would happen if you placed a sell stop/limit above the market price rather than just a sell limit to take profits? Assuming the stop would trigger the limit order like a stop loss, but curious. Would there be any benefit in a sell stop/limit vs limit? Thanks!

Hi James, great question. I dont see a benifit from placing a sell stop limit order above the market price. The limit order alone will ensure you don't get filled until the price is at or above your limit price. Traditionally sell stop orders are only benifical if used below the market price. With that said I haven't placed a sell stop limit order above the market. If youre really curious you could try it will a small amount of coin, but I don't think there is any benefit. Now buy stop orders above the market are extremely useful and how I get into most of my trades. Hi Chris, great question. Unfortunately, it was some video editing that allowed me to zoom into the screen, youre not actually able to expand the chart bigger. I rarely use the Coinbase chart; other than a final check before placing the trade. Instead, I typically use Tradingview. www.tradingview.com/ It's an awesome charting software that is easy to use. There are a lot of features in the free version and it has crypto. Hope that helps!

Why not put your sell stop limit much lower than your sell stop order instead of just barely below it?

Hi there! Great question. You could absolutely put it as far bellw your stop as you want. It just likely isn't necessary as more often than not your order won't have a problem filling at/around your stop price. However, just keep in mind that the intended purpose of the limit order in this situation is to "protect" you in the event there was say a flash crash. In that instance you may infact be 'saved' from your oder filling significantly below your stop price because of the limit order. But that means you'd still be in the trade and be down significantly on paper, but because it didn't fill you didn't realize those losses. Honestly, it's just how you ultimately want to control/think about your risk. Because if it wasn't and flash crash and just dropped and kept going maybe you did want to get out even at a mush lower price than where you intended with your stop. It's personal preference on how you want to handle your risk. I've never experienced a flash crash myself with a stop / limit order on so I'm speaking only from a theoretical point of view. Can't You do stop loss and limit to get Yr profit on the same crypto. If I buy bitcoin let's say 29k and wanna stop loss at 28 and limit 30 can I do tgther or only one

In theory yes as that is how those orders work. However, it depends on which exchange you use to whether you can do this or not. Coinbase Pro currently doesnt allow you to set a bracket or OCO (one cancels the other) order. Meaning you can't have bot a stop loss and a profit order on at the same time (like you can in the stock world). I believe Binance and crypto.com do allow these order about you'd have to check! @@mastermindty6219 somewhat of a deal breaker. However, if youre able to do some watching of the coin (maybe set some alerts) what I like to do is use sell stops as profit takers. What I mean by this (and I need to do a video on it) is set a stop loss on your initial position to protect yourself, but after it moves up a bit and maybe creates a new support level, put a stop below that new level for a portion of your position while simultaneously moving up your initial stop loss to your breakeven. In other words say you buy a quantity of 100 coins at a price of $10 and you out your stop at $9 for all 100 coins. Now after a few days the price goes up settles and makes a new higher high level at $15. You could set a new stop at say $14 dollars with 50 of your coins and move the other 50 coins stop to a price of $10. That way the sum of your sell orders never exceeds the amount you own and you now (1) can't loose money (2) could take some profit if the coin moves down to 14 and (3) could continue to make gains if it never comes to 14 and you just keep moving that 14 up to rh next level. So not a set and forget, but a work around that I find works well.

A sell limit order will only execute at or above the price you set. So if you set the sell limit order at 145 it won't trigger until the price of avax is at or above 145. If you have doubts about it, put in a tiny sell order and you'll see if won't trigger immediately, it's going to wait until the price hits your limit price 📈 Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions! 👍🏻

If your not that worried about it, just place the trade as you wanted. As for the price, I see why you chose 145. It seems like a reasonable price as that's about the previous resistance level.

I'm only thru your explanation of limit orders but I want to point out that I do not think it is correct 100%. you are basing your explanation off of coinbase's wording on the general info they have. if you look there is also a link to their legal explanation which states it will trigger if the price is "better", that single word is the difference because if you are using the BUY option the logic works in reverse. it will not trigger a request to buy until the price is LOWER/ better than that. example for a BUY if the current price is $4,000 and you do a buy limit order for $2,000 it will not request your BUY until the current price reaches $2,000. This is from my understanding so far as I'm new so I could be wrong but so far that is how I believe it to work. basically the word "greater" is completely the wrong wording

Hi there. Thanks for you question. If you haven't already, I would encourage you watch my video on buy orders as well kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpmpY2Z6lt-Ibpo This explaines exactly how buy limit orders work. Which mirrors your example above - your BUY limit is placed below the current market price and is filled only when the price is at or below your order price. The term better is a bit subjective, but yes your buy limit order is technically getting you in as the price goes lower which you could interpret as a "better" deal than the current price. Now sell limit orders are the exact opposite. As described in the video your sell limit order is placed above the current price of the coin and will not trigger until the price of the coin rises to your price. Now to that word "better" - when your selling, the better price is higher not lower (your trying to buy low and sell high). I appreciate your question and it can certainly be confusing between order types, but hopefully these 2 videos help clear that up as well as the explanation above. Also just a note, buy and sell limit orders are not exclusive to Coinbase or crypto so while Coinbase description might use different terminology, the execution works as described. Hey buddy I have a question for you! I like to make a SELL Order on my crypto that is a limit and stop on the same crypto. Is that possible? Like I have 1 bit= 1000 and make a Sell Limit to Max Amount and limit at 1150 and at the same time a Sell Stop Price at 990 at Max and limit Price at 980 is that possible?

Hi there, I believe what you are describing is putting on both a 'profit taking' order (Sell Limit) and a 'stop loss' order (Sell Stop Limit) at the same time. Is that right? If so - yes you can have both trades on at the same time. Just keep in mind, Coinbase Pro does not offer OCO orders (one cancels the other) which means if one of your orders fills - either the profit order or stop loss order the other order will remain on the books. You just need to go in and cancel or adjust the other oder once one fills. Does that make sense? If that doesnt answer your question let me know and we can spend more time walking through it. If I want to place a sell order for a future higher price, then I use the Sell Limit? For instance if I want to sell Shiba at .01 (currently @ .000012 ) and don't want to monitor it 24/7 but I don't want to miss out on a surge, this is how it would be done?

Sorry for the delay! Yes you're correct, you could put in a sell limit order for the 0.01 and if Shiba hit that price it would sell it without you needing to monitor the account. I know this must sound like complete idiocy but,,, I bought a coin with a stop limit to protect agasint a fake-out on coinbase. But now the coin is going through the roof and i am not longer worried about protecting agasint a loss, i am wanting to seil and take profits... do i just create a sell order and one orders will cancel the other? or do i cancel the buy order before i sell???

Not idiocy at all! This is confusing stuff, all questions welcomed! You can do it a few ways. You can set a SELL LIMIT order at or above the current price or you could do a SELL MARKET order (if you want to get out super fast). Once you get out, go ahead and cancel your STOP LOSS order. You could cancel this first and then do the SELL LIMIT or MARKET, but you won't have any protection in those few minutes you take to place the new order (not a big deal unless the coin is super volatile). The other thing you could do if you watch your coins closely is move up your STOP LOSS order to a more recent support line on the coin. That way you'll still be in the trade if it rips higher, but also will only loose a little bit if it drops. For example: Lets say you bought the coin at 100 and had a stop at 95. The coin is now at 130. Instead of putting in a market order to sell or a sell limit at 130 or any target price above that, you could cancel/edit your stop loss order and move it up to 125. If the coin continues to 145 in a day or 2 you could move your stop again to 130. That way you stay in the trade but don't risk loosing a ton. Now if the coin is super volatile or has low volume trades (not a lot of people trading it) or you're ready to completely close out and get your money probably best to stick with just selling using a sell market order or sell limit order. I understand that Limit order is useful if for example you buy some crypto at $1 and its like telling coinbase to sell that amount of crypto when it hits $2, making profit. But if it doesnt hit that $2 mark what happens? Can u cancel the order? if you cancel it do you lose that amount of crypto you put a limit order for?

Hi Andre, excellent question! In your example if the coin never hits $2 then your order simply doesn't fill. As long as the oder hasn't filled you are able to cancel, remove and place a new sell limit order at any time. Say you decided that $2 was a little extreme and you wanted instead to take profit at $1.50. All you would need to do (assuming your $2 order didn't fill and the price currently is below $1.50) is cancel your order at $2 and place a new one at $1.50. Is there a way to place both a stop and limit order at the same time. For example, if I don't want my investment to dip below a certain level but I also want to take profit if it hits a certain level. I tried to do this on CBP but it didn't work because it said I had insufficient funds due to the stop order I already placed. Thoughts?

This is called a bracket order or one cancels the other (OCO). Unfortunately CB Pro doesn't have this feature... Yet... It's pretty crazy they don't have it, especially for such a large exchange. I'm sure it will be offered in the future. Big miss for sure. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

So a sell limit order is when you already own the underlying crypto and you're looking to sell some or all of your coins. You cannot sell short (currently on Coinbase). Meaning you can't sell something you don't own. If you currently don't own the crypto you're trying to sell you would need to do a buy order first. You could do a market, limit or stop BUY order to get into the crypto and then set up a sell order after your BUY order was executed. Hope that helps, let me know if you want to discuss further! Great question and there is a lot to unpack here! If you want to dm me over on my discord channel we can chat a bunch more. bit.ly/discord-brianlogen For now, i find using a 5:1 ratio is typically a successful target. Meaning if you risk 100 you want to be at least fairly confident that the underlying had the reasonable likelyhood to reach a price that turns your 100 risk into 500. When it comes to selling or holding, it depends what your goals are. I always try to take a little off if we get some good pops while maintaining a core position. This is a little harder to do with a smaller account, but the idea is the same - keep a core position ( if you believe BTC is a good long term investment) then trade around that core position with some swing trades. Hope that makes sense. That's just one of many strategies out there too.

If you did a buy market offer and your entire order was filled - to close that order you can often click on your position and close it via a sell market order. Or create a new order and type in the exact quantity you own and do a market sell order. It should fill right away. Does that help? Well as mentioned I'm not a financial advisor so I can't give financial advice; however, in my opinion based on technical analysis, owning some BTC at 36K is pretty good, looks like that is a short term support area. BTC had a good bounce off of that price level and broke up through a negative trendline but didn't do it on a huge amount of volume (which is a bit worrisome). All that being said, in my opinion I'd leave a core position at 36K but then use a sell stop order as a chance to take some profits up in the current area but continue to hold the rest of the position for potentially more gains. In the video I talk about sell stops as stop loss orders but you can also use them strategically for taking profits too. Can funds on CB be used for CB Pro or are they 2 separate exchanges?

They are the same company but coins need to be transfered between them to trade on each. The transfer is free and instantenous. However, coinbase pro is getting shut down and merged with coinbase and a new added "advanced trade" area, so I think you can keep all your coins on coinbase and take advantage of the coinbase pro functions on the "advanced trade" section. Or.... you could move over to Kraken which is what I use exclusively now. Much safer and I've never had a bad experience with them. r.kraken.com/brian_logen

Unfortunately a little movie magic on that one. Super frustrating on Coinbase Pro that you can't open the chart bigger. All I did there was when editing the video I cropped out the chart and pulled it forward. Hey there! Another great question! So the most important thing is the 2,330 price which I determined from talking through the support area starting at around 4:40 in the video. Once I knew where I wanted to place my stop, I just needed to put in how much ETH I wanted to sell. I just randomly choose 0.01ETH for example purposes. You can see it then helps you calculate what that translates to in dollars (~23.30) Does that make sense? Sorry, I didn't see the second part of your comment! My bad! I 100% agree with the superfluousness 😂 of the sell stop limit order. However, from my understanding and speculation - the one benefit - and probably why Coinbase Pro and others require it is to prevent selling your order coin/stock incase there is a flash crash. In this instance, maybe the coin or stock drops 30% or something crazy for a matter of a few seconds/ minutes but then immediately pops back up. The limit order as part of your stop saves your oder from executing at the 30% level because the market moved so fast just a simple stop order would go to market and the market already dropped like crazy. The limit wouldnt allow it to sell that low. That make sense? Open to others thoughts as well if someone has additional perspective 👍🏻

I just went through and checked my statements as well as tested it and didn't see any charge for the taxes on my side. Now I was talking to someone else about a different issue, but one I couldn't replicate on my end even though we shared videos of our exact steps. I am so sorry for the delay in responding! This is a great question. While I don't specifically mention it in my maker/taker video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6mwgImLlrqDh68 I do allude to it. So "Post Only" tells the exchange that you in NO WAY want your order be filled if it is going to charge you the taker rate. Meaning you only want to be charged the maker rate. So if you place your limit order to the order book and the price of your order is extremely close to or at the mid price (aka the current price of the coin) and you say "Post Only" there is a chance your order will be cancelled because the exchange can't force your order to sit on the books before getting filled. "Allow taker" just means you are okay for your order to fill with EITHER the maker or taker rate. On Coinbase pro, currently if you are trading less than $50K a month the maker / taker fees are the same so "allowing taker" makes sense as default as your fee is the same. If you are over 50K a month and sensitive to the difference in maker/taker fees than you may want to consider using "post only." Personally, I always use "allow taker", but you have to decide what is best for you 😀

Hi Cory, it's practically non existent in the US. Kraken does allow short selling on Margin but only if you meet ECP requirements with one of those being $10Million in assets invested on a descretionary basis. That's the only place I can find. Outside the US i think there are less restrictions but I'm in the US so not sure. I'm guessing as regulators get their heads wrapped around crypto they'll be more trading on margin / short selling in the future but for now it's limited. Sorry that isn't more helpful! One very important warning here: Be very careful with stop loss orders on crypto. Sudden quick drops with near instant recoveries are not entirely rare. If not used wisely you can end up with a stop order that removes a chunk of your coin only to log back in and see the price at or above the price the initial drop started from. They have their place, but have risks worth considering. This was a very well written and expressed series with easy to follow instructions. Great job.
