Here is a link to my website for my coin rings for sale.

This is a video explaining how to make half dollar coin rings. This version of coin ring making only requires a few basic tools: a mandrel, a mallet, and a torch. You will also need a way to make a hole which I go over in another video in more detail. Some optional tools are a ring sizer and a press, but they aren't necessary for making the ring "shape", but it does make them look better.
If you need dies for reducing check out Jason's Works etsy shop:

Also be sure to check out his youtube channel Jasons Works
This video will explain in more detail how to make a center hole in your coin.

Hi. I just received a mandrel in the mail but when I got it, it had a grove cut into the side going the full length of the mandrel. I want to make a few coin rings. Will this mandrel still work or should I get a mandrel that is perfectly round all around?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint

I would return that one. It needs to be a mandrel that is full all the way around for sure.

+Coin Rings from The Mint - Change You Can Wear Thanks for the response. Another question. Why don't you anneal before punching the hole? Wouldn't it be easier to punch the hole in the annealed metal?

Question - when I compress my rings, sometimes they look wobbly and not round - I use the A frame press - how can I avoid this wobble?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 9 жыл бұрын
There are 4 main things that can cause that to happen. 1. It can be caused by not having a perfectly centered hole. It doesn't take much out of center at all to cause a problem. 2. If you try to reduce one side of the ring too much without doing the other side evenly. If you reduce a little at a time evenly on both sides, it is best. 3. if you dont hammer the coin down the mandrel evenly enough. if the ring isn't hammered evenly as you fold it over, it can cause problems. Also it needs to be perfectly against the mandrel or it will come out poorly. It is always a good idea to anneal it when you are done hammering and then throw it on the stretcher to even it up, even if it looks perfect. 4. If your reduction dies are rough or at a more shallow angle than 20° it will cause problems. Chinese stretchers that I have seen usually have this problem. If that is the case, it needs to go to a machine shop to be corrected. There can be other reasons, but these, or a combination of them, are usually the culprit. I am thinking about doing a video of what not to do with coin ring making to help steer people away from the common pitfalls, so keep an eye out for it if you were interested. Thanks!

When using the Harbor Freight punch, which end of the punch do you use? One end is slightly tapered on the edge and the other perfectly flat.

@CoinRingsfromTheMint

+Monte Draper With a half dollar you can just re anneal and keep stretching carefully and keep checking for splits. I use Jason's works mega stretcher for larger rings. It is a sleeve that goes over your existing stretcher.

Just how important is annealing? Ive been banging on a Swedish 5:er of cupronickel for hours now and it hasn't changed shape. It was really wasy at first, I got it down until flipping point, but after that it just refused to budge and my mallet is just falling to pieces!
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 8 жыл бұрын
Annealing incredibly important for softening a coin to get it to bend. Just keep annealing as you go. Those cuppro nickel coins are crazy hard to do for sure! All that nickel is what makes it tough.

On an half dollar would 7/16 hole reduce to 6 ? Thanks
@CoinRingsfromTheMint

+Jon Waters You could but it would produce a wide ring. A size 6 is hard to get to comfortably without using the Swedish wrap method. I don't normally go below a size 7 without it but I always use a 1/2" hole.
