It's about conversation between Sohni and her clay pot, which is about to sink along her. She used to travel across river Chenab each night to meet mahiwal, but one day that clay pot replaced with the one having unbaked clay by her sister-in-law, so in middle of river she realized it's not her pot and she won't be able to cross the river to meet mahiwal. It's about that.. She's having conversation with clay pot, 'aj mahiwaal nu mei jana mil way...warna..yaar nu milay gi aj lash yaar di'

This song is about an old tragic folklore. During the Mughal Empire reign in the Indian subcontinent, there was a beautiful girl named Soni. She lived on one side of the Chenab River in Gujarat. This area was home to a very famous trading port. So merchants and traders throughout the world would visit. Soni and her family had a small shop where they sold decorated pots. One day, as Soni was in the shop, an Uzbek merchant named Mahiwal came inside and instantly fell in love with her. Then every day after that he would come to the shop just to see her. Soon, she too fell madly in love with him. However, Soni's family and village members wouldn't allow her to marry him because people from her village couldn't marry outsiders. Heartbroken, he moved to the other side of the Chenab River. At night when everyone was asleep, Soni would sneak across the river using a large baked pot to float across. One night, her sister-in-law (her brothers wife) sees her and hatches a plan to replace the baked pot with an unbaked pot, so it would melt in the water while Soni would try to cross the river. This song is a conversation between Soni and the unbaked pot. She is begging the pot to take her across because she has to see her lover. But because the pot is unbaked it inevitably starts to melt, and the pot says to Soni, "Kacchi meri miti kaccha mere naam ni". When Soni realizes that there is no escape she says "yaar noon milegi ajj lash yaar di" (tonight my lover will be greeted with my dead body). Finally, the pot melts completely and Soni drowns. Her lover on the other side sees this and jumps in the river and drowns too so that they can finally be together in the afterlife. :(

We have national language, plus regional languages, dresses we still wear, we have much developed music and cultural fusions, we have local poetry. Sometimes i feel that india even lost their national dress or they don’t have one. Every body even illiterate people wear western dress, mean they have lost their identity to western culture.

Shilpa Rao's Depiction - Sohni talking to herself to never lose hope even if it means to be her corpse to cross the river and be on the other side with Mahiwal. Maturity is in understanding that, this is not just about clay pot. Baked clay symbolises the feeling of love at very initial stage, where we make anonymous efforts to get a glimpse of our loved ones whereas unbaked clay resembles the love that is lost after experiencing it. Most often it sinks and duely unnoticed!

The poet's amazing imagination takes us to the unfortunate night in the Sohni Mahiwal folklore, when Sohni is suffering to meet her beloved Mahiwal. She is trying to convince her claypot to get her to reach the other side of the Chenab river so that she can reunite with Mahiwal, but the claypot is slowly dissolving in the river water and she is about to drown. The singers, musicians and composers did absolute justice to this beautiful piece of punjabi poetry. Everything about this song is perfect.

Different areas in Punjab (in both Pakistan and India) speak different, distinct dialects of Punjabi. You're probably hearing the same Punjabi as your Dadaji because he must have migrated to India from that region in Pakistan. (That's assuming that he migrated during partition. My grandparents did.)

'Ghada' is trying to convince Sohni that 'he's' incapable of transporting her to the other side of Chenab and that she shouldn't go, they won't make it. Then there's a silence and the Sagar veena part comes in and I think that is when Sohni decides to embrace even death if that's what it takes to get to mahiwal. Involves such powerful inexplicable emotions.

This song has special relevance to me as born and raised on southern bank of the river Chenab and often used to swim in the river where Sohni and Mahiwal were drowned and by chance my wife is from Sohni's town Gujrat, it was pleasure to listen this with my wife. Not an easy song to sing though, Shalpa has sung very good in Punjabi and Noori has done full justice to the song as well.

I have lived out of Pakistan since age 21 and my grown sons here in the US have very good and decent friends from school age of Indian descent. My oldest son keeps on saying that even being Kashmiri Muslims our ancestor must have converted from Hinduism. This song is like a wave. It's a journey. Like in the beginning of a journey, you are so enthusiastic, full of energy, optimistic. That feeling is covered by the first singer. Then it's like there's a storm in the way, your path seems to be never ending, it's infinite, it's blurred. You are facing too many problems. But, you have to made it till the end even if you have to die. That part being covered by Shilpa. And then again some divine mercy is bestowed in your heart. Your faith on the divine gets multiplied by thousand folds. You know your master will never leave you in this hour of turmoil. You start believing somehow you will cover that distance by the grace of Almighty. "*jaida tenu paar lagawe*" . That part being taken up by the last singer. Love, respect and many congratulations for making a lifetime track that will be listened, cherished and appreciated by many generations ahead. From India.
