This is a Saraiki Punjabi folk song . People have written and composed it for recording purposes . But I think the origin like all Punjabi folk songs is unknown and people have sung it for centuries ..

Chan kithan was written pre partition by a Hindu Punjabi woman who was married to a Sikh in what is now Pakistani Punjab, She died on the Indian side post partition She was from Dera Ismail Khan and I believe she died in Delhi. At the time Saraiki identity was viewed as being part of the Punjabi identity like Majhi, Doabi etc. on the Indian side it still is, on the Pakistani side Baghri is regarded as a dialect of Punjabi and in India it is regarded as a dialect of Hindi.
