President Joe Biden met with President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Geneva on June 16. US-Russia “disarmament discussions have been pushed to the back burner. Instead, treaty compliance disputes have dominated bilateral engagements. Meanwhile, each side is rushing to replace and upgrade its bloated nuclear arsenal,” writes Daryl Kimball in Arms Control Today.
Meanwhile, the U.S. is intensifying technological and economic competition with China and using US-China military tension to justify an increased Pentagon budget. Congress is preparing to pass Sen. Robert Menendez’s Strategic Competition Act of 2021 (S.1169), which constitutes a de facto declaration of a New Cold War with the People’s Republic of China. It would codify a comprehensive, and systematic strategic competition with China as the organizing principle for U.S. domestic, foreign, and defense policies, and possibly for other nations as well.
For analysis of these developments, we were joined by Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson. He was interviewed by MAPA’s assistant director, Brian Garvey.
Col. Lawrence Wilkerson is a distinguished professor of government and public policy at the College of William and Mary and was Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell from 2002 to 2005. He was the Keynote Speaker at Massachusetts Peace Action’s annual meeting in March 2019. Wilkerson is a critic of the US invasion of Iraq, the ongoing War on Terror now in its 18th year and the turn to a new nuclear arms race. He asserts the U.S. is not a democracy but a war state that forces its will on the global community, and in 2020 worked on bipartisan projects to prepare for the possibility that a defeated Donald Trump would refuse to leave office.

Hubris is the right word to describe the US political culture. Not being the world number one is not tolerable. Poking the other 2 major nuclear powers is extremely dangerous. For the sake of humanity, I like to see China and Russia come to a mutual Security and defense agreement as a deterrent to the recklessness of the US foreign policy.

they have already seen what we can accomplish in poor small countries like Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Vietnam and perhaps even Cambodia. we freely broadcast problems with our cities, crime, school, healthcare, and regional destitution. we caused the 2007-2008 financial collapse. later, we elected a tv gameshow host president. I do not think China has anything to fear.
@bruceadam5632

I agree with almost everything except the last sentence 'I do not think China has anything to fear'. You see the last two presidents of the US of A are a couple of jokers, they have NO idea of the REAL world and as such do not know about the consequences of a real war let alone a nuclear war. As it is, I don't think it matters who is in the White House, it is the Military-Industrial Complex that runs the country.
@macrosense
@macrosense 3 жыл бұрын
@@bruceadam5632 i suppose china can fear a nuclear war. but if that happens we all die. from a strategic perspective, we are simply becoming less economically relevant in that region. look at the trade figures. maintaining a pretense of military power becomes increasingly expensive, and ultimately decreases our ability to remain economically relevant there and economically potent at home.

It’s difficult to negotiate with the US government because each department has different agenda and all are basically threatening China all the time with nil negotiation skill. Even all things are settled, China has to deal with another new US government when US president changes because each president will try to flex his/her muscle to act tough and to outdo the previous president or undo what the previous government did and had done.

Col. Wilkerson, your candid opinion is very thought-provoking and real in nature and context. War with China must be off the table, no way the US or China can win, it will not only be MAD for the two but for the rest of the world. I think wise people need to play their role in reining in the lobbyists for arms manufacturers and corrupt contractors. No way the US can take the loss against China in the Taiwan or South China Sea, if the US is ready to sacrifice a couple of AIrcraft Carrier groups without achieving any military objective it can try to start a war with China. In the end, the negotiated settlement would be the only solution, no US Congressman or Senator would want a mushroom cloud rising in his neighbourhood. Then what to follow the track would lead to it? Sanity should prevail, the US, China and the other powers should work in collaboration to avoid climate catastrophe, improve trade, develop technology to fight disease and hunger among the less fortunate global citizens. Chinese don't seem to be asking for a conflict, they want stability and peace as you have identified correctly. God Bless America, God Bless American Politicians with wisdom and sanity to avoid an unimaginable catastrophe.

General MacArthur warned JFK to avoid a land war in Asia. JFK, based on this warning of General MacArthur said, "Anyone wanting to commit ground troops to Asia, should have his head examined". MacArthur saw what happened in Korea when the poorly armed Chinese troops with no heavy weapons, tanks and air support drove the combined armed forces of the U.S. and the U.N. back to the south and fought to a stalemate. MacArthur was so cocky as to say, "We will be home by Christmas". He even said the U.S. should use the nuclear bombs on China. If JFK had not been assassinated, there might not had been a Vietnam war.

From day one, America has or shows very low threshold to use nukes. Truman delegated his military commanders to make the decision to drop the bombs. There were also several other occasions that nukes were considered against China before it developed its own and after it did but lacked capabilities to strike long distance.

US want to maintain his hegemonic position in all aspect, such GDP, Technology development, military development ,finance etc. When Japan's GDP rose to 75% of US GDP, then it force japanese yuan to devalue, US also suppress japan semiconductor development, likewise it also suppress the France Alstom development, as for Russia, US doesn't allowed their nuclear power bigger than them, since the collapse of Soviet Union, till today it try all means to sanction on Russia, and try to further weaken and make it collapse further. As for China, it is very jealous china as economic power leader for most of the nations, like BRI, BRICKS etc, and find ways and mead to instigate and threaten those participating nations to withdraw. basically, USA it just a trouble maker for the world, just imagine, it is how nice that if the world can have 10 to 15years peaceful time, without wars and conflict, but on US side can they survive and sustain its economy growth without having wars in 5 years periods? Just imagine, if there are no wars in all nations, what will be the political situations and environment in Europe, US, will US and NATO be able to sustain their military power in the next few years? The US always wants to instigate and create trouble between India and China, the same thing happens to those nations that participate in BRI and BRICKs. In my opinion, the US is the troublemaker for world peace.
