I'm glad Rachel's book is generating some interest. I *did* know about America's flirtation with fascism in the 1930s and early '40s. However, when I mentioned it, most people were like, "Aw, that never amounted to more than a handful of crazies." Wrong. If the Japanese hadn't given Americans a racist, jingoistic reason to hate the Axis, the public wouldn't have supported the war.

In her autobiography, Trump's first wife said he only had two hobbies. They were golfing and studying and repeatedly watching Hitler's speeches. She said he was fascinated by how Hitler was able to get so many people to adore him. That's why he talks so positively about "Hitler having the right idea.". Her book was published in the 90s long before Trump ever decided to run for office. He is literally following Hitler's outline.

My grandfather was German-American. He had 14 children, 7 of them sons, all of whom were over 18 by 1941. He had been approached by the American Bund and "strongly encouraged" to send those sons back to Germany; he refused. A portrait of his youngest son and my mother (his youngest daughter) taken in the early 1940's shows my uncle is in a US Army uniform.

I am intrigued by Rachel's take on fascism ... enough to want to read her book! What I am getting out of her conversation with Stephen is that there are a lot of people who just want someone to TELL them what to do, because it is easier to say, "They made me do it!" than to say, "I chose to do this!" Evil becomes stronger when good people remain pliant and silent.

I don't think being told what to do or escaping responsibility for actions is actually the hook for most people. The core wish fulfillment of the fascist fantasy is having those in power hurt people you're uncomfortable with or whom you (always erroneously) blame for various perceived ills in life. It's the ultimate power/revenge fantasy when you can't get what you want through good ideas or pursuasive argument (because neither will validate your grievances). Giving power to thugs & abdicating responsibility to them is just an unavoidable side effect. The loss of freedom and near certainty that all will eventually become targets for those in power aren't something pro-fascists thoughtfully choose, just the inevitable consequence blindly backed into.

I would love to see a presidential debate moderated by all 3 of the old daily show crew (colbert, stewart & oliver) and each time the nominee's start arguing all 3 of the moderators just start going into an argument of their own about something actually relevant to the public. It's terrifying to learn about the pre-WWII fascism! Why didn't we learn this in school? Considering the state of the country now, I understand if kids today didn't learn this, but my HS world history classes were early 80's; there's no reason we weren't taught this during that time. It's also horrifying to see Republicans wallow in 45's filth, knowing they won't make improvements because they're too scared to stand up and be actual good human beings.

These same feelings will no doubt be expressed decades into the future by kids in schools today where frank discussions of historic American atrocities are censored or banned outright. It's an incredibly dangerous and irresponsible position to take, restricting access to information and silencing teachers attempting to equip students with the critical thinking skills they need to process that information intelligently, and as the stakes for our species and the planet as a whole continue to climb, so will the danger of not being able to confront those challenges effectively.

I read a research paper out of Harvard that stated that over 25% of Americans, at any given time, support some kind of autocracy. My take on that is that those people have an aversion for thinking for themselves and want to be told what to do.

“It Can't Happen Here” is a 1935 dystopian political novel by American author Sinclair Lewis. Set in the fictionalized version of 1930s United States, it follows an American politician, Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, who quickly rises to power to become the country's first outright dictator.

I don't think most people in this country understands what "...for the Republic" or the "democratic system" means. When those words are uttered, I think people are thinking about Republicans and Democrats. This is a huge deal, people need to understand the difference.

If there was ever a time for Liz Cheney and Adam kinzinger to run on a joint ticket. This would have to be the time. Pull the GOP back to some semblance of normalcy. Enough of this riding the crazy train. Get the adults back in charge.

Have you checked the voting records of either. They both voted with Trump in the 90% plus category. Liz Cheney rhetoric about choice voters is especially scary.

@@barbaras2669 I am definitely not a GOP fanboy. I am not even American. I am Australian. Looking from the outside, in. But the past voting record is just that in the past. Look at the sacrifices they both made, when they were on the jan 6 committee. They stood up and told the truth about Trump and his now cult followers of the GOP. Should the GOP win in 24. You would hope it would be with Liz as President and Adam as VP. but let’s hope it is a Dem win with regained majority in both houses. I think Kamala Harris should run for President. Joe Biden is far too old.

@pattygman4675 I can not agree with you. It took an insurrection and their lives being threatened to get them to speak out. All the damage had already been done. They never stood up to Trump while he was in power. They never spoke out against Trump when it counted. Nancy Pelosi gave them that platform. Trump was a symptom of the moral decay of the GOP. They propped him up. They could have voted for impeachment in the first trial. They did not. They put party before country. They knew what a loose cannon Trump was. They didn't care until Trump did to them what he had been doing to the democrats and anyone Trump perceived as his enemy.

@@pattygman4675, Harris is not particularly popular with Democrats with anybody really. I think there are many, many people who could run in the Democratic ticket, but I don't think she would win. I think Gavin newsom has a shot at it.

I so agree with Rachel. You don't want this egomaniac to get tv exposure, BUT having real tv exposure would allow the public to see due process of law. So, Trump's lies would be immediately fact-checked. I wish cameras were in the civil case, so we could see how inefficient the Trump team is. Thank you Rachel for your energy and insight. Please continue to keep us informed, we need you now more than ever. And Stephen too! xoxo

Cameras in Congress has destroyed the integrity of the House and the Senate. Legislators have stopped speaking for effective debate and reasonable legislation, now they perform for the home audience. Cameras in court rooms literally turn the judicial process into trial by media. It's a terrible idea.

I think you could also argue that American was founded on fascist ideals (property owners were the only voters, and some people weren't actually people, on top of that people were angry at paying taxes), and they were active again during the days of anti-progress in the 19th and first half of the 20th century, this was a period when you could argue that money was starting to have more rights than people, late stage capitalism = fascism over time.

My understanding is that federal law doesn't allow cameras in the courtroom. So the judge, even if she was inclined to allow them, has her hands tied. She literally "cannot" grant the motion - as a matter of law.
