A personal Ina Garten anecdote: in the late ought's my beloved partner Todd was an Ina Garten devotee as well as being a superb chef with his own restauraunt. At age 40, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and only given a few months to live. On the merest acquaintance with her, Ina and her husband Jeffrey asked Todd and me over for cocktails at their house in East Hampton. I kept it a secret, and during a drive around town with Todd one afternoon, pulled into Ina's driveway, knocked on her door, and she and Jeffrey came out greeting Todd like a long lost friend, ushered us inside and spent the next hour and a half talking with Todd about food, hospitality, recipes, and every interest they had in common. He was thrilled. It was the kindest, most generous act imaginable. Ina Garten: Humanus Emeritus!

I was a big Ina fan for yrs, but my feeling toward her changed when it came out that she wouldn’t grant a little boy with leukemia his “Make-A-Wish”….to spend the day cooking with her. They tried the next yr and again, she refused. When the boy’s mother blogged about it and it hit the news, then she reached out wanting to meet him. By then he didn’t want to and chose some much cooler dolphins to hang out with.

I have just about all of her cookbooks. I can always find something delicious to make with an Ina Garten recipe. Her gazpacho recipe is a summer staple in my house. And her Company Pot Roast is an all time favorite. Just made it a few days ago. She seems so down to earth, like cooking with a friend (as opposed to Martha who I find far too fussy). And this lovely interview just reinforced what I've always thought of her.

Every now and then I consider skipping an interview because I’m not familiar with the guest. I’ve never heard of Ina Garten and I don’t care about cooking shows, but boy did I find her sweet and charming! In less than 7 minutes I get why she’s had a 20 year career on TV. And I thought it was great that Stephen actually watches her show. Very delightful.

I have to admit that I didn’t care for her at first…I thought her adoration of her husband, Jeffrey was over the top. Then I came to decide that it was genuine and really kind of sweet. How did the pandemic affect me? Well ... I didn't go out for dinners and still don't ... I learned to cook far better through watching KZbin vlogs ... I used the money saved from eating out and stimulated the economy by buying cooking equipment (pots, pans, dehydrator, waffle iron, meat slicer, deep fryer, etc., etc., etc. ... and I now routinely host dinner parties. Woohoo ... thank you pandemic! ... I'm saving money and have a much better lifestyle. Crazy Eh!

@@BuildinWings let's all look at the fact that we are human... if you have never failed, then tell us your ways... otherwise, maybe heal your cognitive distortions, that cause a person to see things (and people) in black/white, good/bad lenses. Life isn't that simple. It's complex, nuanced, and we all fail. The most important thing is do we learn, do we have accountability? If you have a core wound of shame...it's much more likely you point out others failures. Is this the case?
