What's the difference between a cold air intake and a short ram air intake? What are the benefits of one over the other? Cold air intakes attempt to relocate the engine air filter outside of the engine compartment, thus pulling in cooler air and allowing for more power. Short ram air intakes are designed to have a minimal impact on air-flow restriction, and are lighter. Which is better? I'll have to put them in my Integra to find out!

You forgot about the most important benefit of both intakes - increased induction noise!
@EngineeringExplained

My brain doesn't understand that part haha. If it's loud, it should be fast. If it's not fast, it should not be loud. Also, noise is wasted energy. That said, reducing noise through resonators is also wasted energy (quiet doesn't mean efficient).

Engineering Explained The noise is being emitted whether you hear it or not. The stock baffles just eliminate it. The energy "absorbed" out of the system has no bearing on "useful energy" since vibrational energy was never being used to move the car. I think people are getting confused. The cold air thing is only there to help eliminate heat soak affecting the air coming into the engine, but you already did a nice video on that. But that's not the main benefit of getting rid of the stock intake assembly. Main reason is to enhance pumping efficiency, primarily at high RPM. Air is "sticky" and the engine has to overcome this viscosity to pull air in the engine. When there are baffles, resonators, changing cross-sections, it causes turbulence which is lost energy (in terms of pulling air in). The CAIs and WAIs eliminate this, but still air wants to stick to the inner walls of the tubes, and the longer the tubes, the worse it is... I will be curious to see if the increased length of the CAI causes more head loss than benefit from the colder air.

I actually had a noticeable difference when I installed a short ram intake into my 2002 Acura Rsx Type S. I raced a buddy with a 2000 Celica Gt-S on a few occasions and it was withint half a car length from a 40km/ph pull up into high speeds. After I installed the short ram, I almost immediately pulled away from him and by the time we hit high speeds, I was over 5 car lengths ahead. We both determined that our shifting was the same and hadn't changed between the runs, and we did multiple races before and after I got my short ram.. So since then, I am a believer. Plus they sound awesome! :D

In my experience the CAI feels and sounds better. After sitting at a light for 2 minutes then pushing the engine hard there seems to be a noticeable but brief loss of power with a RAI. And with the CAI I was on edge every time I had to drive through a puddle during rainy season since the filter is often relocated closer to the ground and near the wheel well. The rumor around forums is that RAI is for lower rpm gains and CAI is for higher RPM gains. Either way I'm Interested to find out!

I tried both on my old RX-8. Both gave about same power upgrade. Short ram was more responsive, but after heat soaking (trafic light or slow trafic + hot day) Idle was very rough and engine was very laggy for a while. So I went with Cold Air Intake. Better than OEM air box in every way. For me, CAI was better for daily driving and/or weekend racing. CAI will also do ok in rain. Only thing to watch out for CAI are water puddle and heavy snow

Other factors to consider are the effect of the pressure wave that gets sent back up the tube every time an intake valve closes. When the intake valve closes, there is still a lot of air traveling at a significant velocity that is going to bounce back when it hits that closed valve. In addition, the reservoir that is a stock air box creates a buffer zone, which allows new air to enter the box, while old air leaves the box and enters the engine. Modern air boxes take in to account important factors of frequency/resonance, whereas tube style intakes do not. This is an explanation for those of you who have bought tube style intakes, and gotten little, no, or less horsepower than before. However, for turbo vehicles, the goal is to create a massive positive pressure in the entire system behind the turbo to the intake valve, so a tube style intake makes plenty of sense. The turbo is sucking in as much air as it possibly can, with no regard to what's going on behind the turbo to the intake valve. Any small fraction of a degree of temperature you can lower the air that the turbo receives will have multiplicative gains on performance, since such a large volume of air is being actively forced into the engine.

Here's my plan for my Honda. Install a short ram intake, have the pod filter in some type of heat shield / air box, and drill a few holes in the box connecting hoses through them that lead to the front of the car, drawing outside air through the system.

I got a short ram on a turbo set up with a CBV valve that shoot the air back into the intake when you lift the gas so my short ram actually sound like a blow off valve and the sound difference is just insane.Some short ram intake design ( like mine ) unlike the one showed in your video also provide some from the engine bay heat with metal panel and even use the EOM fresh air port that connected to your stock air box, so not that much hot air actually goes in the engine like the short ram featured in this video.

FIRENICEWOLF Having only bought a mid-priced one all I can say is... K&N wouldn't make one for my car. Weapon R made a great one. There was one by Spectre, but it was more of it...buy all these bits and assemble it. Much more room for vacuum leak issues/error and less linear air. K&N by reputation on the street claims unless it improves performance they won't make it. I've always wanted to know if it was true or just great street cred. Having had a mid-priced one in my hands and lower, I did pay for what I got if that makes sense. Some of the K&N install so slick when I watch people sponsored by them, but is it really that easy? My Weapon R instructions were horrible. It supplied most of what I needed but I had to use some of the kit not as intended. Why? It left my vent control valve from my EVAP system without a ground.

I can vouch that short ram intakes do help. My 2008 Hyundai Accent has a cold air intake (CAI) from factory (it was restrictive I must add). After the short ram intake (SRI) install I noticed definite improvements in performance, (fuel economy, throttle response, power and sound). Although there could be very different results for other cars (some cars come with better airboxes and bigger plumbing). A lot of people think modern day cars come with stock intakes that are the best for the engine, they are not; they restrict, baffle, and relocate the inlet of the intake (usually to a place that won't improve performance) to quiet down a car.

Not all short ram intakes (SRI) are created equal. Some point the filter towards the exhaust manifold while others point the filter toward the intake manifold. I personally found the air temperature difference between a SRI and CAI to be minimal, especially while moving. The air from outside of the car is being forced into the engine bay through the grill while the heat from the engine bay is being sucked out from the bottom of the car while driving. I tested everything with a Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner

+Christopher Christou It's actually not as big of a deal as most people think, as long as you don't submerge it. Engines can ingest a little bit of water, like in water/methanol injection. Just don't want to hydrolock it. A filter does a fairly solid job of keeping large amounts of water out, as well.

My understanding is that apart from the air intake temps the two designs differ based on intake air resonance tuning. The intake valves create pulses in the induce air and form destructive interference until they hit a resonance point and changes to constructive interference where it actually increases the intake pressure. That point is dictated by the length and diameter of the pipe. Sorry trans are generally tuned for peak hp where as CAI are tuned for mid range gains because they are usually longer.

The reasoning behind getting either a cold air intakes vs short ram intakes all really depend on the application.. Most road cars would see the same effects as these intakes with just an uprated panel filter fitted in the factory air box, the only difference you will really notice is in the sound, induction kits tend to amplifying the the sound of the engine sucking in air (which is a cool sound I will admit). Now when we are talking about more highly tuned cars we can start to see the real benefit of these kits. In most high performance cars the stock air filter will be restricting the flow of air that the engine is trying to consume, an induction kit will decrease these restrictions(due to a less restrictive design) and allow the engine to breathe more freely. In most cases, the only reason you would install a short ram over a cold air intake is ease of installation and price, the benefit of drawing cold air into the engine definitely outweighs the effects of longer pipe runs. Cold air intakes tend to have the air filter located in the wing of the car whilst short ram have it sitting in the engine bay. As soon as your engine gets up to temperature the short ram, despite being able to draw air at an accelerated rate over a standard set up, will be drawing in all of that hot air. A cold air intake on the over hand is isolated form the engine bay so it will be able to draw in much cooler air from the surround atmosphere. A great way to understand the effects of hot air is to think of a time you have been in a really hot environment like a sauna, it feels as if you are out of breathe doesn't it? Its the same for an engine. So from what I have said so far it would seem cold air intakes have nothing but benefits over a short ram intake, whilst this is 99% true in terms of performance, cold air intakes come with a couple of impracticality for every day cars. Firstly, due the location of the air filter (often near the front bumper) it will be subject to getting blocked up with debris much quicker than a short ram that's kept hidden in the engine bay. Secondly, when it comes to clean or replace the filter it is much more difficult to actually access it (often it involves removing body panels to gain access), plus you will be doing this more often than with a short ram intake. All in all, each one of these systems has its benefits and draw backs, it all depends on what you are hoping to achieve. I hope anyone who got this far found this useful. This comes from research and experience as I have a cold air intake installed on my car. Is it necessary for me? Yes. Why is it necessary? My impreza sti is pushing over 430hp at 1.65bar and feeding the turbo free flowing cold air helps to achieve this(along with many other upgrades of course) B-). Luke.

I heard that the short ram will help the RPMs increase a lot quicker because its less restriction especially when accelerating from a low rpm. On the other hand because the longer cool air piping travels away from the engine bay, the temperature of the piping itself slowly drop as air continues to pass through but because of air flow restriction and the time it takes for the temp to drop to its fullest potential, they are recommended for top end results. This is just my personal theory. I love all your vids ive learned a lot from them.
@AutoBodyEverything
@AutoBodyEverything 6 жыл бұрын
Note: though the longer cooler air intake gives cooler air, it takes time for temps to fully drop because half of its piping is in the engine bay and aluminum gets hot quick like a heat sink but as air flow increases it will slowly cool down that hot section of the piping..

Users with forced induction engines often opt for short ram intakes because compressors adjacent to the engine, especially turbochargers, heat the incoming air and negate much of the benefits of a cold air intake.Cold air intakes are mostly used on naturally aspirated engines where the colder air can help increase horse power slightly but nothing compared to what an ECU tune/map will provide.Both intakes do add more air volume if the stock ECU tune/map can keep up with the parameters.

Short ram, better in the COLD winters because it takes in warmer air. Very cold air, is not good for combustion, even if it is dense with more O2 per volume. Its is "too" COLD so it will negatively affect MPG and HP. CAI is better in places with no cold winters, as explained.

I try not to say things that I don't know to be true. I didn't think I'd see any improvement out of these guys, but the test results will be fun to go over. Also, a dyno is a challenging method of determining whether something is improved or not. If peak torque drops in the mid range, but peak power is increased at the high end, do you really know that for your application it will be faster/slower? I think properly testing it requires acceleration runs, with realistic airflow and temperatures, rather than using a fan's supplied air. Installations/Testing will come over the next month or so!

i love MCM but im pretty sure they used a turbo skyline? or was it that old carburated hatch ? either way a cai not gonna do much for a turbo setup, and that carburated hatch they had couldnt put down consistant numbers so testing with it was kinda pointless. the CAI i got on my car puts the airfilter in the front bumper and i cutaway part of the front bumper, exposing the airfilter to incoming air, and i was able to see that my intake air temp was down nearly 20 degrees F just from cuttin the bumper. With the cai my intake air temps are usually ambient air temp, give or take a couple degrees. but before i cut into the front bumper the cai didnt really make a difference over the shortram i was usin. but how much horse power could be added off of a 20 degree F drop in intake temps, probably so little it doesnt even matter lol

ChronicConnoisseur How about no. Do you know what the purpose of a turbo is? It's called forced induction for a reason. It's pushing more air into the engine, the colder the air the more oxygen that's present and the more fuel that can be added. If CAI's make any difference it'd make the most in a turbocharged car. A stock 4 cylinder car isn't pulling in anywhere near the amount of air that a turbocharged car is. Your argument makes no sense

***** I just went through some rough calculations using a difference of about 14 K for both an engine that has 0.68 bar of boost and an NA engine. I found that both the supercharged and the NA engines had around the same percentage increase of moles around 5%. However, the supercharged engine actually has an increase of roughly 2.8% before the intercooler. The intercooler cools air inverse logarithmically, so it has a harder to cool the air the closer it gets to ambient temperature. Overall, this shows that the percent increase in moles for a supercharged and NA engine are about the same, and that intake temperature plays a nominal role in the density of the intake air (which plays an even smaller role in added power) because the difference is simply too small. However, this was done using the same temperatures for both engines, a supercharged engine should naturally have a lower intake temperature as it is, meaning the percent increase will probably be lower.

Use a CAI or factory airbox and relocate your IAT sensor from the intake manifold to the intake tube. This will make the PCM add more fuel to your mixture. Next step is to pull your crank position sensor out of the bell housing on the tranny and slot the mounting holes. Put it back in place, but move it against the direction of crank rotation. This will give you about 4 degrees of timing advance. Modest power gains from these mods, but they're almost free. You just gotta trick the PCM. Disclaimer: I only know for certain these work on 318/360 CID Dodge V-8 engines from years past. The principles are sound, but YMMV.

The cold air intake would ONLY be beneficial in idling condition as it would suck in colder air compared to short ram while there's no air movement. but once the car is in motion the air temperature difference would be close to nothing between the cold air and short ram...when measured at the throttle body when you're driving on highway. there's no way the air is going to be "warmed up" by the time it reaches the filter. at 60-70 mph. sure it might effect the air temp if you're driving around at 0.1 mph only thing that is different between the two is the power band would change slightly .shorter piping gives you more top end where as the long piping will give you more of mid range gain .

The length of the intake tube also affects Helmholtz characteristics. This is assuming the engine is heavily relying on it, otherwise there is very little difference.

EVEN IF THEY BOTH DO NOT ADD HP.... If a car that has a "short ram" or "factory airbox" drives around and gets the engine bay temperature to rise, is there a point when the air inside the engine bay gets so hot (expanded) that the car starts to lose power? WITH A COLD AIR INTAKE even if it may not ADD power, will it prevent the car from LOSING some power since it is pulling air from outside the car? (because it's always pulling fresh cold air and not from the heat soak engine bay)

Another point you did not touch on is ignition timing advancement with lower inlet air temperatures, but this is not really a benefit from cold air intakes as most EFI cars have cold air intakes in form of airboxes that scoop air from a cooler part, even if the airbox itself is in the engine bay, it's ducting sucks air from behind a headlight or bumper.

With air intakes in general, is it only the filter that stops rain? I might be able to buy that for some cars, but what about like exotic, mid-engine sports cars with enormous scoops practically the size of the door? I'd imagine in a short time any kind of filter would get soaked and become a huge hindrance.

@MarcosCruz-xe7vv
@MarcosCruz-xe7vv 10 жыл бұрын
What I know is that short ram intakes work best at full throttle were as cold air intakes work better at the lower RPM ranges. What's a little gimmicky about these intake is that the piping is metal which heat soaks a lot and transfers the heat to the inside were the air is traveling. This heats up the intake air, reducing performance. Right?
