An alternative to the Seven layer wool & fleece mix layering. This is by far more compact and lighter, and more suitable for winter camping, than long term survival (7 layer surplus)...
Base layer, merino Wool 3 piece long johns...
Layer 2. MK 3 Velvet Norgie style, or fleece norgie MK2
Layer 3, Mk 2 softie in tan. (buy one or two size bigger than required.
Layer 4. Han Wild fleece waterproof, Or Gore-tex. dependent on weight saving, and pack compaction allowance.

Fleece is a great option. If it gets wet, it drains and dries quickly and still keeps you warm. I've met people who argue that wool is superior, but wool tends to hold water. Wool may well "keep you warm when it's wet" but it's going to be wet for hours and hours. Wet and very *heavy*

In full agreement, I love my wool commando jumper, but combined with other layers and carried in the pack when not in use, it gets bloody heavy. Check out my video on the (Buffalo smock) lightweight Aquatherm fleece, and doesn't even need a base layer. Spoiler alert its expensive,.... BUFFALO SPECIAL 6 SHIRT. I really love the 1990 kit, bit bulky but so worth it below zero C. This video option could be a sleeping bag-less option for summer/spring on the ground, all ready tested them in a hammock, and was over heating, so venting options a must, as demonstrated. .Have a great new year...bex

Hello Bex and I like your 4 layer system and I need to upgrade my old system to mk2 softie. I like your medic pouch can you show more about that ? Great video and thanks for sharing. All the best to you and your family. David

The trauma medi pouch has been filmed, and will post it this spring, after we have finished showing the cold kit. The softy up grade is a good option for day hiking too, buy one or two sizes bigger than your size. These are not a baggy fit like the OD green reversible tan softies.....Have a great 2020....bex

I was given a soft shell jacket last week, like your but grey ... i have pretty much lived in it, i cant work out the fabric ... its a bit clammy, not i'm not hot and not cold while wearing it, ... i found it works better over a long sleeve base layer rather than a t-shirt. ... the fleece base layers are great, ive replaced my norge shirts with them, but prefer the older reversible thermal suits to the new ones. Only negative i have found since switching to fleece is after several days in the field they start to smell. I cant see myself getting rid of the wool pull overs thou ... they are tried, tested and saved me a few times.

Thanx for watching. I know where your coming from about getting funky after a couple of days or so. I just come to terms with the fact I'm gona get a bit funky, and stream wash them when I can... Mine dry out amazingly quickly, hooked to the outer pack. Love my wool knit surplus jumper too, but takes a little longer to dry.... Last weekend I sweated out my fleece and wool mix layering thru to my skin (my bad). Hung them under my tarp at 4 degrees C, even the wool knit was dry before bed time, (that camp vid out next week)..... Am going for light weight polyester, and merino mix this year, set of just 2 changes in the pack, plus what I'm wearing to walk in, weighing in at 2.1 Kg, so wear a pair wash a pair option, 3 sets total..... No jumpers, after a successful testing last year, of my Norwigian extreme cold weather jacket, so sleeping bagless for some of this years ground camps I hope...happy trails bex

Hi Bex I've watched quite a few of your older videos, the DIY thermal under blanket one was hilarious it shows you can be serious then completely lose it like us all. You're always trying to improve the kit you have to your own requirements.

Wife (sarcastic tone): Are you feeling a little chilly, go and put another layer on. Me: Shut up, I'm blooming boiling, he's got two coats on. Wife: You should get yourself a coat, they say it's going to get get colder next week. HNY Bex, great video yet again. Lovely kit. All the best to you and yours 👍
