Cold Chisel is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. They had a disagreement with their US label when they were attempting to break into that market in the early years. The US label wanted them to change, and they basically gave the label the finger, went back home to Australia and decided to focus on their existing fans. The song “You’ve Got Nothin I Want” is a direct message to the US label and execs. This story was unknown to me and to a lot of Australians until we started noticing a distinct lack of Cold Chisel in American KZbin videos. This is one of the greatest rock bands ever, and they’re barely known outside of Australia & NZ.

That "accordion" by the way was harmonica (blues harp) which gets a feature spot in their song Bow River from the 2003 live concert. It's a ripper.

Cold Chisel is just being discovered by Americans now thanks to the internet and reactors like you. They have many great tracks of equal quality and are amazing live. Hope you get a chance to check out more of them.

Every Australian of a certain age knows the lyrics of this song by heart. One more year the worse for wear.

If they don't know the lyrics, they are still to young. They will get to it! By the way this studio recording (love it) is much more tame than Chisel Live! Louder, Harder, Faster.

I served in Vietnam with the 3rd Marines, Quang Tri Province, not at Khe Sahn, but up along the DMZ. The Australian guys there in country were awesome! I wish I had a way to contact the ones I met there. Of course, we had no idea there would be an Internet in the future. No....Great Britain or Canada never sent any troops to Nam.

There were no Brits in Vietnam, but there were thousands of Australian troops, airforce, and navy involved. Khe Sahn was an American battle, not an Australian one, but Australian's often flew close air support for Americans on the ground. Australian Canberra bombers flew so low, they often sustained shrapnel damage from their own bombs, but that low flying capability meant they could bomb very close to troops on the ground with very high precision, it was a capability that the US lacked at the time. In the case of this song it is probably referring to an Australian helicopter pilot seconded to the Americans, and probably flying an American gunship in close support. Those guys had to have cajones of steel, and they could see up close the destruction they were causing to the enemy. This song focuses on the long term impact of that experience. The refrain of "the last 'plane out of Sydney's almost gone" sums up the emptiness of his life. This is an incredible dance song, especially in a longer version.

Thanks heaps for the amazing reaction. The guys voice you love is Jimmy Barnes and he’s an Australian legend. Cold Chisel are a phenomenal rock band and one of the best. You should check them out live performing “when the war is over” and “bow river” live Ringside 2003

Good reaction. As with most Aussie performers, live is best. Cold Chisel has two front singers, this one has Jimmy Barns, if you do 'Bow River', then you get to hear more from the other one, Ian Moss. Both have their own solo careers. Yes, that was a harmonica.

Great song, great band. Australia was involved in Vietnam, a small role but Long Tan 200 ANZAC's held off 2000 Viet Con, the movie Danger Close did it justice. Another great song about Vietnam is 'Only 19' by Redgum. The Vets were not looked after right.

New subscriber as you reacted to the best band on the planet 🌎 cold chisel has two main singers Jimmy barnes and Ian moss this song is Jimmy barnes singing lead. (Jimmy sings most of the songs) Jimmy barnes has a great solo career as well.. Jimmy sings a great duet with John Farnham another legendary aussie singer the song is called “when something is wrong with my baby” and also sings another great duet with another aussie band INXS the song is called “good times” cold chisel are actually thought of best band to come out of Australia ahead of INXS and AC/DC.. John Farnham is also thought of as best singer in Australia 🇦🇺 if you react to more cold chisel and Jimmy barnes plus John Farnham and even INXS and AC/DC you should get heaps of new subscribers.. in Australia due to our small population most of the bands like cold chisel, INXS and AC/DC spent there early yrs playing at pubs on the weekends so we were spoilt as many of us got to watch them live whilst enjoying a drink in a pub! If you play khe sanh in a pub in Australia 🇦🇺 you would find it hard to find anyone not singing along as the song is legendary in Australia and is often voted by people as the best song by an Australian artist ever

This was from their first album and they never wanted to release singles however, the radio stations pushed hard for this to released so they did. Because of its meaning and the delicate nature of the times, it was promptly banned - and a legend was born

Australia sent advisers to Vietnam from the early to mid 60s to assist the South Vietnamese, and later troops once the USA fully committed to the war. More Cold Chisel please...their cover of Wild Thing (live) is next level.

Jimmy Barnes was born James Dixon Swan. His mum re-married and most of the kids changed their name to Barnes. However his older brother John Archibold Dixon Swan continued with his birth surname, and when he entered music was known as Swanee. Barnes kids formed a band "The Tin Lids" and many years later an illegitimate son - David Campbell contacted him David Campbell is also a singer... but he is a crooner singing old standards. So the whole family are musical.

Chisel are worth investigating, one of many classic Aussie bands and artists from the eighties and beyond. I liked your review...but one hint - check your output volume level. It's very, very low and could do with a few decibels of gain. All the best from Oz.

Thanks, I'll see what I can do. As you can tell, my equipment is quite lame. I'm completely non-monetized and way too cheap to buy anything better. I'm also pretty clueless when it comes to computers etc. I'm just kind of hanging out in my kitchen playing music I still use my big Pioneer speakers and my turntable in my clay studio. Is it my voice or the music that is too soft?

Greg you've stumbled onto THE quintessential Australian band. Cold Chisel's music and lyrics are woven into the fabric of Australian culture. Everyone born in the 50s and 60s in Oz knows and loves these guys. Their songs were the soundtrack of my youth, and I'm sure many others would say the same. Ian Moss the lead guitarist and co lead singer is world class . Check out the Last Stand concert in 1983 of him doing Georgia On My Mind, he absolutely kills it, you'll enjoy it. Have fun and great reaction video.

It would be remiss of me not to mention Don Walker, the piano / keyboard player in the band. He wrote 99 percent of their songs and is a master lyricist.

One of the first encounters in Vietnam is the Battle of Long Tan where in 1966 1 Company of 6 RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) took on a division of Viet Cong This battle is depicted in the film "Danger Close". Basically 100 or so Aussies took on up to 2,500 of the enemy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Long_Tan

I find that American think that their country is not supported by allies in warzones. The fact you are unaware of Australia's effort in all conflicts in which the US is engaged, shows that your country is self-consumed. Where Australia goes, you can guarantee that the very small nation of New Zealand (Aussies' brothers in arms) will go too. NZ lost soldiers in that conflict and like the song their effort is overlooked.

As a young draft age anti war protester I didn't know shit and I have not gone back and read enough history to know about your countries efforts in Vietnam. I have been very aware of what you and our other allies have done in the wars since 9/11. I proudly display my two service star banner. I am also quite aware of the ANZAC service in WWI and WWII. Americans in general are self absorbed but we are not all clueless.
