Dont forget Barnesy lived in France and performed there for years when he was looking to pay off his tax debt. They could easily have heard him singing it many times and bought the albums... yeah I found out after I posted the comment that the tractor they talked about in the video was Finnish and the band was Norwegian but too late to bother after I posted it... theres no doubt when you hear the song they copied it, its almost note for note until the chorus.

This song was banned from airplay when it first came out because of the line "And there legs were often open" Countdown said they could sing the song on the show if they changed that line but they said no.

love this song, love what it stands for. Using this song for my VCE History SAC on Vietnam. God Bless the thousands of men who fought in the war. In my eyes, both sides deserve respect, because both were fighting for what they believed in. VIETNAM VETERANS DAY - 18th August. On this day, think of all those who were lost, and our vets who aren't being respected.

Its actually quite a feminist lyric - if anyone feels like looking it from that POV - it's a view of how desperate things were for EVERYONE at the time. ie in general round this time there was fuck-all choice for women. I'm liking believing that was the intention, anyways....

n total approximately 60,000 Australians-ground troops, air-force and naval personnel-served in Vietnam between 1962 and 1972. 521 died as a result of the war and over 3,000 were wounded. Yes we fucking were. Even the Kiwis were over there.

@blueeyesseto Okay first of all, regardless of whatever you think they do when they get here or by what means, they are still asylum seekers for the mere reason that the are seeking asylum. BOAT PEOPLE= A DEROGATORY TERM FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS. And if they could get here for free do you think they'd choose to pay and risk their lives to get here by boat? What's it to you what cars they're driving? Perhaps they value their life here and work hard for things most aussies probably take for granted.
@blueeyesseto

@SmellyTriangles yes because if they went through the Australian Embassy they could get to australia free but instead the chose to come by boat $4000AUD worth then when they get through the processing their off driving $40000 cars sorry but thats not an Asylum seeker oh fogot to mention they burn down the FREE acomodation and riot but sorry if thats how they are going to act then send them back

@vapour938 Unfortunately, mate, when most of our Aussie diggers layed down their arms they were ordered to be shot by British military leaders. In Kokoda, General MacArthur had a tendency to dishonorably discharge/fire/etc anyone who wouldn't charge headfirst and kill themselves (including the wounded at certain points in the campaign). While I agree with your sentiment, I would hope you haven't been brainwashed into mindless nationalism like the US. There's more to it than 'freedom'...

@sabbath5678 awesome? we don't love america for forcing us into an unwinnable, ideological war that killed or harmed patriotic australians for no good reason. world wars 1 & 2, korea and vietnam seem to have made us into a proud but peaceful country that seeks to protect the people brave enough to lay down their lives in it's defense. we'd rather not uselessly send the best of us, our patriotic soldiers, into danger. i wish the same could be said of yr native country.

@LoneStriper I was merely pointing out the shameful instances of abuse and neglect of our soldiers by the Whitlam government and influenced public - this is pertinent to there being no V-Day heroes at that time. Returned servicemen were an embarresment to the likes of Dr Jim Cairns who lent his wholehearted support to the pro-Soviet government of the fallen South Vietnam. This treachery rankled then and still does.

@gregbakermate Greg, my brother did three tours in Vietnam, he is listed only twice in Australia Remembers, a book listing all active service personel in all enagements from Boer to First Gulf Wars. First, PT Boats, Second a dubious 'Miscellaneous', his third tour happened, the malaria he contracted happened, records of it are the only thing which didnt. I think what you whish to say is Australia and New Zealand forces were not "OFFCIALLY' at Khe Sanh.

You do not know what he did whilst there, war changes people and when people are put in extreme situations the survalist inside of you kicks in. It IS something to be proud of. Would you prefer to have no one there to protect your country whatever it may be? God Bless the ADF and all other forces.

Do you Australins really think you are kidding anyone here? Everybody knows Australins only said they were in war in the 20th century because of our politics. Australins should live in their island and enjoy their kangaroos with their crocodiles and not try to tell real people that they are important. Let us be serious... tell me how many of them won grand slam events after ww2? huh! i bet they didnt even know what tennis was~! Your honor, I hand to the defense! Ask any veteran!!!!!

Hey Wettaylor1958, what's a POME? Is it a series of written lines of prose that rhyme? ;-) I thought the derogatory term used by Antipodeans was POMMY or POM or POHM possibly meaning Prisoner Of His/Her Majesty, or, common in both Australia and New Zealand, "Prisoner On Migration", because many of the first British settlers in Australia were convicts and arrived in a prison uniform. So was Australia was built from UK trash? Not really the best start to the formation of a new nation is it?

The Battle of Khe Sanh was fought between US Marines and the North Vietnamese Army. The only Australian personnel to be directly involved in the siege were the crews of Canberra bombers operated by 2 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who flew close air support missions in the area. "Sanh" is often misspelled (even, at times, on official album covers and sleeve notes) as "Sahn".

Errr, we weren't in the battle, hang on we were but only a few. Make up your mind or take some more ritalin. I pick you as a seppo. Americans are the only ones who care about it still and that's just beacuse it's another war (like Iraq) that they lost. In any event, to make a debate out of the meaning of some song, instead of just enjoying a great song, is bizarre to say the least. You're weird mate.

Of course we Aussies were never near Khe Sanh, which is up near the former demilitarised zone in I Corps area of operations, whereas we were in Phuoc Tuy province well south of that in III Corps area, but it's still a great song, it's just a pity they didn't call it "Long Tan" which still kinda fits. Khe Sanh itself was a U.S. Marines operation .

If we become a republic, it'll absolutely destroy what little prosperity we have currently. Do you realise just how much it costs to become a republic? Beyond that, good on your dad. What happened when our boys returned home just wasn't right, and if his way to take a stand is not going to the ANZAC marches, then more power to him.

Is it just me, or has Australia been continuously FOLLOWING in the history books rather than ever LEADING. First the British, and it wasn't up before very recently WW2 that we've begun to break away from them a little, and guess what? We're just brown-nosing America now. I prefered follow the Queen without question, personally.

Aussies weren't in Khe Sahn. Period. They fought like warriors in the subsequent Tet ... but don't take credit for this silliness. Great song however. The USMC is historic in this fight. 5000 against 20,000 and they prevailed. My oldest brother was one of them. I'm willing to be shown wrong. Believe me.

Look, nationality doesn't matter too much with a song like this. I'm a US Afghan war vet and I identify with this song's message completely. The message transcends nationality. If you've been to war, you just get it. If you haven't you can sympathize. And I appreciate it. But you can't get it.
@ArneFufkin

Great song but pure fiction. The Aussies had no combat action in Khe Sanh. That was the heroic sacred battle ground, once again, of the USMC. Semper Fi. Cold Chisel was an outstanding band and Aussie warriors are amongst the best on earth. Just not there ... then.
