Probably their best song. I love the sort of rambling start, and then at 0.40 it just fucking kicks in. "Standing on the sidewalk you can see someone everyone wants to be. But they got the means to justify every end." Very much a song of what Sydney was like in the heady 80s. The haves and have nots and the have not wanting to get into the club but has no hope.
@bayent016 жыл бұрын
Very perceptive comment. It was indeed written in 1979 while Don was still living at The Plaza and started mingling with the haves. Also a very difficult song to play the start is on 1 and a ,3 key changes , 4 tempo changes later its over in less than 3 minutes...simples

Saw these at UNSW Roundhouse, early 80s, opened their set with this, set the tone for a faultless performance from start to finish. Great Aussie band!

I remember seeing them there too. (I think they were there a number of times). I do recall they finished their set with just Don and Ian performing "Georgia on My Mind".

I remember being 17, not having bought any popular music through my teens, or listened to the radio except when someone else had it playing -- didn't even know the name of the band 'Cold Chisel' -- but then I picked up this album and realized that I knew nearly every song on the track list. I think they call that songwriting.

Fav lyric? "First thing i'm going to do when I get into town is buy a .22 and cut the whole thing down." There's the guts of this song - ultimate frustration. You just wouldn't get a song published these days with that in it. Classic stuff. God they are a great band. When Barnes and/or Walker die, there will be a week of mourning and a public holiday declared (on a Mon of course, so we can all get pissed on Sun & sing Khe San and have Mon off. And get pissed again on Mon. Then ring in sick Tue)

i came up with a theory that involves the book of genesis (fig leaves) buddha (sitting under the bodhi fig tree) jesus (many sayings about figs) ross horne's book (new health revolution) and science (figs are the most important source of food for fruit eating rainforest animals). i then experimented on the figs by eating mainly dried figs (same brand) for over 6 years now and found cycles which i related to the numbers in psgs 11/2 of the book of revelations. this theory has gone everywhere.
